Hi Guys

Hope someone can help.

One of our clients runs SBS2000 in there office. For some reason it shuts
down for no apparent reason. In the event log the system log reports "The
previous system shutdown at time on date was unexpected" before this there
is no apparent errors. We've taken a look at hardware and that all seems to
be ok. I sat infront of the machine all day yesterday and it worked
perfectly. Because of this problem the Exchange Database is starting to
become riddled with errors.

I could do with someones help

cheers

Peter

Sometimes a flaky UPS can cause the shutdowns. How old is it?

Hi Pete..is this a Dell ?

Have same issues, when I am there all is well...lol

Did have a UPS and now disconnected, Sometimes get three days out of it then
happens every day. 10 days ago took all strains off server (uninstalled
virus checker and reinstalled, which solved the update problem) Your AV not
scanning M drive is it ?

Secondary server was taken out as a DC (Replication DNS and WINS now
cancelled).

Was deciding to bring in additional configurations that I had previously and
you guessed it, went down yesterday. Been on site all day and nothing !

I test my ups by shutting down the server, bring it back up to bios or
do something to hang the boot up process and I unplug the ups from the
wall. Start your stop watch. If it does not keep thing running for at
least 10 minutes or more then the batteries are losing capacity. Note
that just the bios running is not really loading up the server. If
your ups software is set for a shut down after 10 minutes of no power
and your ups only has 10 minutes of power on minimal load you are set
up for disaster.

Hi Peter,

Do you have SP1 or SP1a applied to your SBS2000 setup?

I had this happen on one server that had the original release of SBS2000,
the one without the service pack. I think the original had Win2k, SP2
applied, Exchange did not have a service pack applied.

On the original SBS2000, without the service pack, I could not find the
cause of the shutdowns. The shutdowns were random and the event viewer was
clear of errors prior to the shutdown.

This one server that did not have UPS connected to it, yet. This server with
the original SBS2000 was a new installation but using an old P3. I suspected
hardware but could not pinpoint. I bought a new server and installed SBS2000
with SP1 and the shutdown issue went away. I would think it would after that
much investment.

Here is in interesting link about a UPS' issue with SBS2k

OK so not the UPS - sounds like you are infected with the latest
worm/virus - which reboots servers several times (that's one of the
stated symptoms).

update the server - soon!

Google "sasser" - will turn up what you need.
