Does anyone have an idea why a server would just freeze?
Around 2pm today my cleint called me and told me the
network is down. When I got there the server was frozen,
ctrl-alt-del was not working. I hard booted it and
everything was fine. The Anitvirus showed nothing
unusualy as I block almost every attachment from email.
I scanned all workstations and all came up clean. Any
ideas would be great. Nothing in Event viewer as unusual.

I assume that this server is running windows 2000 or 2003. If this is
the case, it is very rare for this to happen and usually hardware.
Windows 2000 and 2003 have very good error trapping routines and are
very stable.

You will want to start checking the CPU and power supply fans are
spinning, that the air coming out of the power supply is only warm, not
hot. You will want to check for anything with the server that might
stand out like:

new hardware
The server was Just shifted
Anything special occurs at this time of the day ?
Is there a UPS in place ?
Is there a backup running at the time ?
Environmental change etc

I have seen this happen when temperatures get to hot or a card slightly
out of place in a PCI slot.

It might not be hardware but 95% of the time it is.

Good Luck

Dell just contacted me and wanted me to update the
complete RAID firmware and Managemnt software for
potential problems with the RAID config. I think this
issue might have been from this... I am waiting for the
CD. The server is running SBS 2000. Thanks.
