VPN Setup
When setting up a VPN on an ISA server there are a couple
ov VPN options when you right click Network Configuration.
The options are.
1 - Setup the Local VPN server
2 - Setup the Remote VPN server
3 - Allow VPN connections
I was under the impression that all i need to do was click
the allow VPN options. If this is the case what are
options 1 and 2 actually for? Tag: Server Status Reports send manually. Tag: 148583

Basic VPN question
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is the first
SBS server I have worked on.
Internally the server is working fine, but we now want VPN
access and / or OWA. I have gone through the technet help
screens, but get confused about how the remote client
finds the server through the web - I have tried to use the
Server IP address (but this gets a "page cannot be found
error)
On the internal network OWA works fine so I am sure this
mistake is to do with the publishing of the server name.
Any help is appreciated, thanks

Have created VPN and client seems to connect ok.
Problem is we can't see any other PC's etc in network

My question is where is this option? We can't seem to see
it anywhere.

Service Packs and Downloads
We have a SBS 2000 server and a Win 2000 TS server.
Is there a quick way to determine what service packs are
installed for each of the applications that come with SBS
2000 ?. I tried looking under the SBS Admin console. I
know I have got SBS 2000 SP1 and Win 2000 SP3 on the SBS
and SP3 on the TS.
Are there any issues in using either express or network
installation when downloading the latest service packs ?
We have only got the 2 win 2000 servers and all our 25 WS
are either 98 (soon to be upgraded) or XP.
Is it better to use SUS or Group Policy to update all the
WS with the latest service packs, patches etc ?
Thanking you in advance.

Exchange Quickie
Hi, I have a SBS2K server with windows 2K client machines connected to it.
Basically the question I have is. Is it possible to have multiple mail
stores within Exchange 2000?
We have 3 different companies and I want to use the mailbox manager to miss
out certain users.
I have tried to use the filter but it seems to do what it wants to do
instead of what I ask, so I am wondering if I can set up multiple mail
stores to different managing procedures.
If anyone can help it would be great.

move win xp pcs from nt4 domain to sbs2000
I have 10 winxp pro pcs that are currently logging on to a single NT 4.0
file server. the xp pro pc's are members of the nt 4 domain (the nt 4 server
is a domain controller.)
the nt 4 server is going to be decommissioned and a sbs 2000/2003 server
will replace it. I want to preserve the users desktops, settings, apps etc
and have the win xp pcs log on to the sbs domain.
I have seen "netdom" mentioned as a tool to do this. Is this the the right

Frontpage ISA settings?
Hi - my website is designed & uploaded in FP to a shared server run by my
isp. If I upload using pc directly attached to adsl router then no
problems - however if the pc is on the SBS network & therefore behind ISA,
the upload gets to the point of asking for the Username & password for the
site & then fails to do anything more. I assume that FP on the pc & the FP
site at the isp must have to do some sort of handshake(?) and that ISA
server is blocking/filtering that. Any suggestions as to how to deal with
it?

SBS users in a Terminal server
Hi Guys
I would greatly appreciate your views on the following.
I am going to install a new application server (2000) in my companys SBS
2000 network.
It will be 2000 in Terminal mode.
We have a about 45 users and I don't want to sit there - punching in login
names and passwords.
All users will have the same rights that they have in SBS.
Could you please help me with the easiest way to propagate my users?
Secondly, I like the simple way that you can publish an application in
Metafarme.
Is there a simple way to do this in terminal server?
Thanks for your help

roaming profiles
I have an SBS2000 network with win98 and win xp pro. They want roaming
profiles. I know the preferred method would be using a GPO and redirection.
But I don't think that works with win98. I setup a folder called profiles
and configured all users to point to this share in active directory. But the
xp clients are not working. they get an error at log in about could not find

I also have the the Local Address Table (LAT) for ISA established for the
DHCP Clients scope 10.100.0.x to 10.100.0254 and the Local Domain Table

Under the Site & Content Rules I have a default rule which I think was
established by SBS 2000 when I made the installation is called BackOffice
Internet Access Site & Content Group.
Also, inside the Protocol Rules I have a rule by default which have the
name of BackOffice Internet Access Protocol Rules, which was established
through the installation.
I tried to establish two Rules to allow the POP3(email) and NNTP(News
Groups) but they did not make a difference.
Please point me in the direction of what I need to do to allow the POP3
email as well as the News Group so client can have access.
Besides for the time being, I am hosting my Email & Website with a hosting
company but once I have everything correct with the ISA I will host my
website on IIS as well as my email through Exchange in the near future
localy.
Do I have to allow other protocols as this time when I start host my email

VPN Firewall through ISA
I have a SnapGear firewall which I will be using as the
VPN end point for my clients, rather than ISA/SBS2K.
I intended to run the firewall through the second NIC and
ISA Server so I could use the reporting features of ISA.
The problem is that because the firewall is a VPN Server
it needs to issue IP addresses out from it's subnet, which
is 192.168.0.255. The LAN IP range is totally different to
this.
What do I do? I haven't actively tested this yet as I am
still in the early stages but need to prepare before I go
too far to turn back. If the VPN clients are issued the
192.168.0.255 address will they still be able to acess the
LAN?
Any suggestions, comments or further questions most
welcome.
Thanks.

Outlook losing appointments
Hi
One of my remote users (120miles away) is complaining that they are
losing the odd appoinment from their callender.
They use Outlook 2002 linking to an Exchange server as part of a SBS

Are there any things I can try over the phone without making a special
journey?

ICW requires removal of address from LAT
This SBS 2000 server is moving to broadband Internet connection, using a
router between the modem and a second NIC. A trial computer plugged into the
router can surf the NET, so I am confident the router and modem are set up
correctly. ICW on the server objects to the IP addresses assigned to the
second NIC by the router, saying they are already in the internal LAT.
I need to know how to safely remove an IP address from the LAT. The router
is assigning 192.168.0.101 today to the external NIC. Yesterday it
was 192.168.0.100. I have been into ISA Administrator and can delete the
range from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255. The internal network addresses
range from 192.168.16.2 to 192.168.16.x which should be more than enough.
Can I safely remove the range indicated above?
Thanks

Outlook and the Mailbox
I admin a small school network of about 30 workstations using SBS2000 as
our server. All the pupils in the school have a mandatory login profile
which makes life simple for us and all the children have the same settings
each time they login.
The problem is with the use of outlook and the mailbox. I assume that a
users mailbox setting is stored as part of the profile so each time a pupil
wishes to use outlook they:
1. right click the outlook icon on the desktop
2. find their mailbox using their own name
3. click OK (more than once)
4. run outlook
Is there a simple way around this. Can I alter the login script to amend
the registry (I have kix32 if that helps).
Thanks

VPN resolution problem
Hello all. I sure would appreciate any help anyone might
be able to offer.
Here is my problem. My client has a vanilla installation
of SBS2000 (2 NICs, ADSL connection, using ISA as
firewall, Win2K SP4, SBS2000 SP1). When we create a
virtual private network connection from a Windows XP
client, we have no problems - we can see the server and
ping it successfully, see shares on the server etc.
However, when we connect through VPN using a Windows 2000
client, we can't see squat - can't ping 192.168.16.2,
can't see server or shares.
I have checked DNS and WINS, and everything seems in
order.
Any suggestions or other things to check?
Thanks!

only admins can fax
I have SBS 2000 set up with XP clients and an external US
Robotics fax modem setup for shared faxing. They were

only people who can fax are those in the Administrators

Does Shared Fax support non english characters?
I have a client that is trying to send out faxes with Chinese characters in
them. However in the fax the Chinese characters are being replaced with
square boxes.
Chinese characters are installed on the server and they do display in the
Shared Fax service console in fields such as recipient name etc. Howerver if
you double click on a fax to open it up in imaging you can see that in the
acutal fax all Chinese characters are squares.
Is this a lack of character support in shared fax or could this be something
else?

SMTP Connector question
Last week I changed the way we send out email from Exchange. Previously I
had been sending directly to recipient using DNS, but due to IP blocking
issues decided to relay all email from my office thru our ISP mail server.
At first glance it appeared to work with no problem. But after a few hours,
it stops working, and the mail ends up sitting on my server in the
"unreachable destination" queue.
To set this up I added the ISP mail server in the smarthost field under the
advanced tab in the delivery section of the Default SMTP virtual server
properties. I also added our ISP username and password in the outbound
security tab on the delivery page. I then added the same smarthost to the
property pages of the Small Business SMTP Connector. All seems to work well
for a short time, then all outgoing mail stops.
Am I doing something wrong? To release the mail that gets held up all I
need to do is switch back to using DNS in the SMTP connector. Tag: Server Status Reports send manually. Tag: 148491

SBS2k and other 2kServers
I have a SBS 2k machine on my network. The way I had it join my existing
network was to install only 2k server on it, transfer the FSMO roles and
then upgrade to SBS2k.
Everything worked just fine.
but what I am seeing is that when I create a new user on the SBS machine, it
creates the user on the other server (like it should) but it has the account
disabled. And on the 2k machine when looking at a users Properties, the tabs
for exchange, email address, etc is not there.
I doubled checked to be sure the FSMO roles are all set on SBS and there
are.
Also, if I create an account on the regular 2kServer machine, the account
gets replicated to the SBS machine, but when I go to the SBS machine, the
tab for Email Address's is not there.

Here are a list of the problems we are encountering when

1 - He can't browse the network via network neighboruhood.
2 - Server name can't be resolved from start>run \\servname
2 - He can't ping the servers local address 192.168.16.1
3 - He is assigned an IP Address of 169.254.23.100
(obviously that's why he can't ping the server but if the
address is suppposed to be assigned DHCP well why isn't he
getting an IP in the 192.168.16.xxx range as it is the
DHCP server for the local network he is loggin on to).

access to the internet a part of their work, but a couple
of them are downloading software and adding mesaging
services etc.
Is there a way SBS can restrict these downloads through
the security or user settings - we have roaming profiles
and so other options require far more work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Error Logs Showing Blackhole
Hi, have some bizzare happenings in my ISA server log
files.
Certain address' keep appearing as blocked
noticeably, 169.254.82.127
The IPPEXTD Logfile shows that the port is 137 and the
protocol is UDP.
Have checked on the guardian website amongst others and it
appears that the servers belong to Blackhole. Not entirely
clear what this means.
I understand 169.XXX.XXX.XXX is apparantly non-routable
Have also posted this issue in ISA server group sorry for
multiple postings.
Any help much appreciated Tag: Server Status Reports send manually. Tag: 148447

2nd sql server server
I'm running Small Business Server 2000 but I need to move my SQL server
database onto its own box. Purchasing all needed licenses, can I add a
second server to my domain to act as a SQL server only. It will not have
any rights/responsibilities for the domain... it won't be a BDC. Can I do
this on my SBS network??

the 15 minute pop equation
I just don't understand what the problem is. WHY do people wish to reduce
the pop connector collection time?
Well, actually, NO, that's not the question. The question is more like 'WHY
do people put so much effort into reducing the pop connector retrieval
interval?'. With maybe a corollary question of 'WHY is it so damned
important?'.
I was dealing with a company for tech support today, the guy emailed me some
notes. As we receive via SMTP no POP connector delay was involved. While I
was on the phone I heard him reading the email, he suggested he was
forwarding it to me and I could hear him typing as he asked me to pause
while I was giving him my email address, he then suggested 'you should get
it soon' so I'm supposing he had actually hit the 'send' button at this
time.
I also called someone else for support yesterday and went through a similar
scenario.
Both emails were simple text messages. One arrived inside the 15 minutes,
the other took 3 hours. One was from Trend Micro, the other was from
Microsoft. This is the nature of internet email. An old quote about internet
email suggests '90% gets delivered inside a few minutes, 5% takes a couple
of days, 5% goes into the big pop box in the sky and no-one knows why.'
I also receive via SMTP at home. If the girl next door emailed me I would
receive it with minimal delay. If she expected me to get off my ass and
knock on her door within 15 minutes she better be offering something better
than dinner to fix her computer.
I just don't understand what the frenzy is.
On the other hand, there are very good reasons why after attempting POP
collection once a short delay should occur before another pop collection is
attempted. Many mail systems (and I'm probably talking *nix here,
particularly *nix mail server farms) 'lock' the mailbox during delivery, if
you attempt to access the mailbox before the lock is released it will error.
The previous POP conversation can be complete but because the server is
handling thousands of requests and also doing it's own housekeeping the
mailbox may still be locked. I'm not sure but I think the lock exists to
eradicate the chance of duplicate delivery.
ie. (if the mailbox lock was not implemented)
popconversation1 'HI, any new mail?'
popconversation1 'Yep, sure is, 1*10MB message'
popconversation1 'give it to me baby'
Transfer starts
popconversation2 'HI, any new mail?'
popconversation2 'Yep, sure is, 1*10MB message'
popconversation2 'give it to me baby'
Transfer starts
some time later more pop conversations get initiated and we've got more
transfers of the same message which eventually may end. The client then has
multiple copies of the same message which transferred slowly because they
all happened at the same time,,, and gets rather confused what to do with
them.
Just my take on the issue. I must be 'in a mood'. IF your users DEMAND
immediate reception of mail tell them the best you can do is a permanent IP
and SMTP delivery, which may result in delays of several minutes to several
days, but won't include an additional 14 minutes and 59 seconds. Tag: Server Status Reports send manually. Tag: 148437

Restoring Exchange 2000 to new SBS hardware
We have just bought a new RAID server to replace our existing IDE SBS
2000 server and so far i've managed to replicate the Active Directory
info to a temporary Windows 2000 server, taken it offline, and
replicated it to our new server using the exact same machine name.
I've managed to seize the FSMO roles and can get an existing workstation
to log on to both the old and new servers, but i'm having problems
installing Exchange 2000 back on to the new server.
On running the installation file from the third SBS CD, i initially got
the error message:-
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services"
cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:
A server object for this server ("SERVERNAME") already exists in the
Administrative Group "first administrative group". You must either
remove this server object before installing, or run setup with the
"DisasterRecovery" switch if you are attempting to recover this server.
On looking at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298068
, i've attempted to run the setup.exe /disasterrecovery command, but i
get this error instead:-
Please use the Exchange Administration Snap-in to ensure you have a
valid Exchange Server Object for this server for which you are running
Setup in recovery mode.
Anyone got any ideas??
Thanks in advance

Documents returns to its previous folder
Hi all.
Server -> SBS 2000
Clients -> Windows 2000 Profissional
Some users on this network told me that for example:
1) they create a document on a folder
2) they move that document to another folder
3) the next time they log in, the document is in 1) state ( like that 2) never had happened )
Any ideas/suggestions why is this happening?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Cant open Microsoft Network on the server!
Hi,
I posted this about three weeks ago but didnt seem to get
any answers, hopefully someone else could have a look and
see if they can come up with something?.
My problem is that I cant browse The Microsoft Network
from my server. Every time i try to access the domain it
produces an error saying it cant find the domain?. I've
made sure that IsDomainMaster is set in the registry and
done several fixes according to several posts relating to
this problem however i still cant browse?. I have read
though that RRAS affects the master browser on the master
domain is that right?.
If anybody has any ideas....

OT: 98/ME support is extended [no this is not a joke]
CRN : Daily Archives : Microsoft Extends Paid Support On Windows 98
Until June 2006 : 2:14 PM EST Mon., Jan. 12, 2004:
http://www.crn.com/sections/BreakingNews/dailyarchives.asp?ArticleID=47165
I'm sorry but I don't think this is a good decision at all.
On the one hand they do the right thing and take out TS in application
mode on our domain controllers, and then on the other hand they continue
to support Win98.
Makes it a little hard for me to stand up here and say "Microsoft gets
security" when they will continue to support a platform that has none
until Longhorn comes out.
I for one am disappointed that they caved in to customer response.

DNS Forwarding Problem
For some reason the check box to "Enable DNS forwarding"
is grayed out on my server and I can't enter any DNS

would be grayed out?

The reports used to send daily to an external email addr. It has stopped
doing so. I can still manually send them, but not by the schedule. Any
ideas on what to look for?
