Our customer is running a network of 2PCs and one NT 4
Server. The NT server is a PDC. We are replacing the
server with a new one running SBS2000 Server. However,
because the NT Server is running a legacy app we still
need to keep it on the network. Because the SBS2000
server has to be the PDC, can we demote the NT Server to
become just a member server on the network?
Thanks

Ofcourse shut down the DHCP and WINS on the NT4 PDC when you get those 2
servers connected.

To perhaps clarify what Marina is suggesting

If you have an existing NT PDC and want to go up to SBS 2000=20
Install a second server with WinNT 4.0 as a BDC to the PDC
take the PDC offline and promote the BDC
Upgrade to Windows 2000
Install SBS 2000
Hope that clears it up

This only works when you haven't installed the sbs yet.
Naming conventions:
NT4 PDC (your PDC-server now)
SBS 2000 (your clean server without any software whatsoever)

Install the SBS 2000 as a NT4 BDC while connected to the NT4 PDC =
(remember 8
Gb is max for C-partition) with the plain vanilla NT4-server CD.
Install SP6a on it.
Disconnect the SBS 2000 from the network and put it standalone.
Install and configure DHCP and WINS.
Promote to PDC.
Now you get the SBS 2000 CD's and start with upgrading to W2000. It =
won't
hurt to connect the SBS 2000 to its own hub.
Make sure you call your active directory something like company.local =
(your
domainname you had already with .local behind it).
Install DNS-server.
After this, check your hardware for driverupdates. Don't apply any
servicepacks, so don't connect this server to the internet. Format the =
other
partitions.
Make sure that DHCP and WINS are starting automatically.
Now you can attach the SBS 2000 to your NT4 PDC. Disconnect from the
internet, disconnect clients, demote the NT4 PDC to BDC.
Start with the SBS 2000 setup, and I would suggest that you store the
Exchangeserver, SQL-server, Clientapps, Users and Company-folders on =
another
partition than C:.
Only after the last (5th) CD, when booting seems to go allright, and =
no
major errors, you apply the latest servicepacks to the SBS 2000.
You will have all your users, but you'll need to do some configuring =
after
all this.

Some more clarification please, I sent this to users and replied to the =
Group.

Can I take my NT 4BDC off the LAN so it is alone by itself, upgrade it =
to a PDC, still not connected to the network, then upgrade that to Win =
2K?

If so, how do I promote it to PDC when it isn't connected?

Can a NT 4 BDC be upgraded to a Windows 2K DC server and exist as a DC =
in an NT 4 Domain when the PDC is NT 4.0?

Does upgrading an NT 4 BDC to Win 2K automatically promote it to BDC and =
install AD during the upgrade, or is AD a seperate part of the process?

Does upgrading an NT 4 PDC to Win 2K automatically upgrade the Domain to =
AD control or is AD again a seperate process?

I tried taking it off the network but could not find how to promote it =
to PDC.

I would like to set my test server apart from the domain, and do a full =
upgrade to Win 2K and SBS 2K without it actually affecting the =
production environment, so that I can see what it does before doing the =
actual implementation.

Please add any info that you can.

Thanks,

Andrew

Install the SBS 2000 as a NT4 BDC while connected to the NT4 PDC =

Make sure that DHCP and WINS are starting automatically.
Now you can attach the SBS 2000 to your NT4 PDC. Disconnect from the

Start with the SBS 2000 setup, and I would suggest that you store =
the

Some more clarification please, I sent this to users and replied to the
Group.

Can I take my NT 4BDC off the LAN so it is alone by itself, upgrade it to a
PDC, still not connected to the network, then upgrade that to Win 2K?

yes

If so, how do I promote it to PDC when it isn't connected?

same way as normal, you just get a message warning you about no
communication with the PDC and it's consequences.

Can a NT 4 BDC be upgraded to a Windows 2K DC server and exist as a DC in an
NT 4 Domain when the PDC is NT 4.0?

no. The NT4 PDC must be removed before you put the W2K machine online. BTW
it's easier to remove it from the domain after you take the BDC offline and
promote it but before you upgrade to W2K.

Does upgrading an NT 4 BDC to Win 2K automatically promote it to BDC and
install AD during the upgrade, or is AD a seperate part of the process?

no. you must first promote it to PDC. yes, AD will be created automatically.

Does upgrading an NT 4 PDC to Win 2K automatically upgrade the Domain to AD
control or is AD again a seperate process?

as above

I tried taking it off the network but could not find how to promote it to
PDC.

I'll bet you just unplugged it, no restart. restart it.

I would like to set my test server apart from the domain, and do a full
upgrade to Win 2K and SBS 2K without it actually affecting the production
environment, so that I can see what it does before doing the actual
implementation.

Please add any info that you can.

Thanks,

Andrew

Is this feasible

To perhaps clarify what Marina is suggesting

If you have an existing NT PDC and want to go up to SBS 2000
Install a second server with WinNT 4.0 as a BDC to the PDC
take the PDC offline and promote the BDC
Upgrade to Windows 2000
Install SBS 2000
Hope that clears it up

This only works when you haven't installed the sbs yet.
Naming conventions:
NT4 PDC (your PDC-server now)
SBS 2000 (your clean server without any software whatsoever)

Install the SBS 2000 as a NT4 BDC while connected to the NT4 PDC
It
won't
hurt to connect the SBS 2000 to its own hub.
Make sure you call your active directory something like company.local
(your
domainname you had already with .local behind it).
Install DNS-server.
After this, check your hardware for driverupdates. Don't apply any
servicepacks, so don't connect this server to the internet. Format the
other
partitions.
Make sure that DHCP and WINS are starting automatically.
Now you can attach the SBS 2000 to your NT4 PDC. Disconnect from the
internet, disconnect clients, demote the NT4 PDC to BDC.
Start with the SBS 2000 setup, and I would suggest that you store the
Exchangeserver, SQL-server, Clientapps, Users and Company-folders on
another
partition than C:.
Only after the last (5th) CD, when booting seems to go allright, and no
major errors, you apply the latest servicepacks to the SBS 2000.
You will have all your users, but you'll need to do some configuring
after
all this.

Marina
