    - Service not starting Hi everyone: I had to boot up my SBS 2000 server and I notice that Symante Mail Security for Exchange the status is "start pending" I can't stop or restart the service because the options are in grey and I can't select them.     - SBS 2003 Server Management Group Policy settings error Hi I was doing some IIS updates and Windows Updates on SBS 2003 and the follwing error now occurs while using SERVER MANAGEMENT. I am using the SETTINGS tab on the DEFAULT DOMAIN POLICY under GROUP POLICY MANAGEMENT. It says "generating report" then the following error comes up. "An error occurred while generating report. [Resource lookup failed - infinite recursion detected. Resource name Arg_NullReferenceException]" Same error for any of the other polices. However if I use the MMC Group Policy Snap-In I can see and edit the policy. I think it is a permssions problem with IIS (which I believe is used the display/generate the settings report).     - SBS2000 and Avaya IP Office Ok Gang.... this is "big" Convinced a customer(about 25 desktops) to replace old dilapidated telephone system with a brand new Avaya IP Office (VOIP telephone switch) and new CAT6 network cabling and new IP telephone desksets. I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600, dual xenon, 1GB RAM, GB NIC'd server running SBS2000 with dual NIC ISA. connectivity is dell powerconnect 2124 switch. IP Office includes (2) Cajun switches. The questions are: 1. anybody done this? 2. will VOIP traffic impact network performance? 3. any know "pitfalls"? 4. any ISA implications? 5. should the cajuns work on a different subnet? 6. should SBS2K DNS server assign addressing to telephones? 7. should the desktops be "plugged" into telephone desksets or directly back to the PC2124 switch.     - mac address problem I have bought a friends old copy of small business server 2000, and have installed it, my problem is this, it is saying cant find the mac address, which i assume is the network card that it was originally assigned to on his old machine. He has taken off his machine and has upgraded to 2003, I have bought it so as I can use it learning how to do the 70/270 exam. I have hit a wall and dont know how to get my network card enabled with SBS2000. I have a floppy that enables 5 licences for the old card, so I would assume that even if I got my network card enabled and seen, that the 5 licence agreement would still be looking at the old network cards. How secure is this software? He has told me that he had a nightmare when he had to change over to a new server, as all new cards etc didn't work in tha same way as I am having. I think he ended up giving up and buying 2003. Surely there must be a way of transferring from one server to another without to much hassle?     - Emails: Relay or Spoof ?? HI, SET UP: SBS2003 with Syamantec Corparate AV - Broadband on NAT/firewall Router - Our ISP Filters Email Spam And Anti Visus 24/7(in and out !!) Relay or Spoof email ?? We get the odd email, which said is being returned to us because it contained a virus(3 out of 1000 per week) ! The email comes from people(their server - isp) we do not know!! Are we being used as a relay ....? How can we find out if so(an logs to look at ..?) ..... and how do ensure we are blocking relaying ?? .............or are these spoofs ?? Thanks for any advice ....     - Exchange Migration Wizard Hi Guys Last weekend we migrated another SBS4.5 box over to SBS2k3. (Thanks to who ever wrote those Migration Notes for Microsoft - They work well!) The whole exercise appeared to work smoothly apart from one small niggly issue. Went to crank up the Migration Wizard from the new SBS2k3 box and it came back with this message.... mailmig.exe - Unable To Locate Component This application has failed to start because MMFMIG32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Stuffed if I could figure it out. The server had been pre built just like a few others and we had never experienced this issue before. The file was nowhere on the server...? With time being a priority we continued using Exmerge which worked but added hours to the job. A tad annoying to say the least (grin) I was just curious if anyone else has encountered this problem. The only difference between this build and a few others we have done was we applied Exchange 2003 SP1.... How does one go about reinstalling just the Migration Wizard if they wanted too.?     - SBS 2000 licence Hi, I have a sbs 2k server. I know that the licence limit is 50. My question is this, Is the 50 user limit concurrently connected users?     - OWA credentials I am logging on to OWA from a WinXP Pro (SP2) PC. In the past I must have told it to remember my username and password. I need this PC to be able to log in to a different mailbox but I cannot find how to make it 'forget' the username and password.     - DHCP server keeps stopping The error message I'm getting is: Source: DhcpServer EventID: 1053 The DHCP/BINL service on this Small Business Server has encountered another server on this network with IP Address, 192.168.168.1, belonging to the domain: . This gets followed by: The DHCP/BINL service on this computer is shutting down. See the previous event log messages for reasons I manually start DHCP Server and it stops pretty quickly. And keeps users from logging on, etc. We have a PowerEdge, SBS 2000, 2 NICs, one going to ISP's router. I've already put the question in to the ISP if they've got the router or anything assigned to that IP address, they claim innocence. Any help is greatly appreciated!!     - Branch Office Hardware VPN connection After reading previous posts here, I didn't see the answer I was looking for. A customer of mine has 2000SBS setup at their Main office, and an NT4.0 Server setup at their Branch office. I installed to a Watchguard SOHO6tc VPN router in each location and I have an active VPN connection between both locations.... have verified it by "ping" from both ends. I'm trying to set it up so that they can have the Branch office server "talk" to the SBS2000 server... ideally be a BDC for the 2000SBS server, to allow Branch office users to access more resources and they have a program they want the Branch office users to be able to access on the 2000SBS box. Main Office SBS2000 2 Nic's Internal Nic- 10.0.0.x External Nic - 192.168.1.2 VPN Router - 192.168.1.1 and Static IP from ISP Branch Office NT4.0 Server 1 Nic - 192.168.2.10 VPN Router - 192.168.2.1 and Staic IP from ISP Same domain name I guess my question is... how can I "open" ISA to allow this to happen, or how should I best configure this. Set your gateway devices (routers, firewalls, etc.) to a "deny all" setting as the default for inbound traffic, then explicitly allow the ports needed to support your business or operational processes. 2. Use egress filtering to block all outbound traffic not sourced from the subnet behind a particular edge router. This is just good common sense, but so many network administrators do not take this simple step. 2. Disable HTML rendering in your email clients. Some email clients have a feature that blocks inline images. If so, turn it on. (Blocking .jpg or .jpeg file attachments is a waste of time. Don't do it.) 3. Likewise, disable the preview panel in Outlook and Outlook Express. 4. Do not use Word as your email editor. Use Outlook's built-in editor. Once you do start patching for MS04-028, do not forget to patch twice - once for Microsoft Windows and once for Microsoft Office.     - SBS2000 shared fax email notification and routing problem Greetings: I have set up SBS shared fax to route incoming messages to a specific mail user. While faxes appear to come in and leave the server successfully, no fax message arrives via mail, and no mail notification appears to happen. I have reviewed Q283072, but there's painfully little insight on SBS shared fax issues in MS's knowledgebase. Any suggestions?     - ISA Event I am new to sbs and i need some help with publishing 0n isa. I keep gettig the error below in the event viewer: Web Proxy service failed to bind its socket to 192.168.4.9 port 443. This could be caused by another service that is already using the same port or by a network interface card that is not functional. The error code specified in the Data area of the event properties indicates the cause of the failure. For more information about this event, see ISA Server Help. I looked on the web for help and did a netstat -an and this is what i get: TCP 192.168.4.9:443 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING. How do i stop this error. I found an article to disable socketpooling on the sbs if isa and iss are on the same box but it didn't seem to do any good. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Jack.     - Trend Micro Hi We have upgraded our CSM Suite to the new SMB product but cannot access the management console to sign in. Keeps coming up with HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required and asks for a username & password. The Administrator credentials don't work. Is there a way of stopping authentication for this and also do we have to create packet filters so that SMB can update automatically from the Trend update server. Our server is SBS 2000 with ISA.     - Microsoft Shared Fax gets bogged down on long distance faxes The firm that I work at is using Microsoft Shared Fax Console on a Windows 2000 PRO machine. All of the other workstations in the office send faxes through the one machine (all running Windows 2000 PRO). Sometimes, when we send faxes (mostly long distance) the fax will not go through. For a while, none of the long distance faxes were going through. Most commonly, the Fax Console gets a busy signal. All of these faxes send perfectly through our manual fax machine.     - Help with csrss.exe large data send problem - Turning to the SBS pros Ok, I'm turning to the SBS pros for advice on a problem I'm having at a client's office. Everyone knows that collectively we are the best in the business. Well, not everyone knows. I just inerited this client and was suprised to find a computer on the internet with no firewall or AV. The computer's IP was in the router's DMZ list. Anyway, the network shortcomings have been resolved. There are 4 computers, and all have been scanned and cleaned with Mcafee Stinger, Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 8.i, and Norton Antivirus 2003.I have also run AdAware and Search and Destroy on all computers and cleaned spyware. However, this one computer persists in sending huge amounts of data out randomly throughout the day. It is enough to make their VPN applications fail because of bandwidth issues. I installed Zone Alarm on the trouble PC and after searching through the logs, I noticed that csrss.exe wants outbound access persistantly. With Zone Alarm installed, the problem seems to go away and yesterday they ran fine. Today, I disabled Zone Alarm and the problem popped up in the afternoon. I've researched csrss.exe virus traits but my scanners should pick up any of these known problems. Any advice on how to proceed?     - Cannot see shared printer on XP machine.... I am in a real conundrum (sp?) here... This should be real easy but for some reason - it isn't!!!! I have an XP Pro machine (SP1) and just installed an attached shared parallel printer (an HP LJ3330 MFP). The printer is set to shared and I am using the PCL 6 driver. When I log onto our Windows 2000 terminal server to add the printer so that term server users can print to it, I select "network" printer, and you are presented with a list of computers. I scroll down to the client XP machine that is supposed to have the shared printer attached and double click it. No printers show up at all! If I try the same thing from my own XP workstation, I get the same thing - no printers show up at all... I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer, rebooting the cleint PC and server, you name it I cannot figure out why this shared printer will not show up to be selected as a newtwork printer. I can not address it by name either. I even tried a completely different printer/drivers everything and no go. I figure there must be something wrong on that actual XP machine. I also checked all of the security settings and set wide open in case that was the issue. This machine belongs to our domain, and I can see it in the active directory and I can also see the printer there!! Has anyone ever saw this issue before?? If so, what was the fix??     - Isa 2000 and Exchange 2003 I have ISA 2000 SP1 and Exchange 2003 in a SBS Box. Exchange was working fine, I installed ISA and things started happening. First of all is a Dual home box connected to a router for the Internet and a Switch for Internal. When I installed ISA, Windows disabled the external Network connection.     - Active Directory crash - SBS2003 Following installation of the latest hotfix, my SBS2003 server no longer serves. The DS log reports that the 'Active Directory was unable to establish a connection with the global catalog. Additional data error value 8430. The directory service encountered an internal failure. Internal ID 3200c45.' According to nltest, ntdsutil etc., it appears that the server is still around but the logs apprear to suggest that the domain controller has been promoted - roundabout the time the hotfix went in. Short of adopting a 'format c:, d:\setup' solution, is there an easy way of recovering the AD?     - restore of Exchange pre-SP3 - help! I have a big problem. Had issues with our Exchange database, our backup was a couple of days old. So, I spent a good part of the day trying to get the corrupt database repaired. That failed, so I figured I'd go back to our backup tape. However, while trying to repair the database, I decided to install SP3 without knowing the consequences. Now when I do a restore from tape, it's saying the version of the logs do not match.     - Outlook 2003 not being updated when showing as connected One notebook user on a SBS2000 network has been upgraded to outlook 2003. All seemed well for a month and then mysteriously last week outlook messages stopped being updated. In the bottom right of outlook it shows as "Connected" but instead of showing the "All folders are up to date" message the time the folder was last updated is displayed.     - Microsoft Shared Fax on SBS 2000 stops receiving faxes We run microsoft shared fax on our SBS 2000 server. Every so often, a fax will come in and the fax machine hangs on it. There is a folder on the server, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Shared Fax\Queue, that shows a file in the queue but the size is 0 kb. Every time this happens, if another fax comes in the fax service on the server won't pick up the fax. If I try restart the service, it will stop it but it won't restart it.     - Recommendations for adding a 2nd SQL Server I have an SBS 2000 network set up and running fine. We use the included SQL Server for a small Intranet... Scenario: I need to add a 2nd server (win2k?) with an enterprise version of SQL installed that a company wide software package will access. Only about 50% of the users log into the SBS server... the other 50% simply sit on the LAN (i.e. don't have internet access, e-mail, etc...) but will need to attach to the 2nd SQL Server (using SQL rights... not the server's). mirror the main server just in case the main server fails we can switch to
the back-up and repair the main server. Does anyone know the best way to
achive this.

First - this can't be done in real-time, because SBS doesn't do clusters.

1) Purchase SBS2003 with Software Assurance (which gives you Cold Server
rights).
2) Purchase two identical servers.
3) Install SBS on production server & configure.
4) Backup / image your production SBS using your favorite backup / imaging
tool
5) Restore to cold server.

Repeat steps 4 & 5 as often as you feel necessary, depending on how much
data you're willing to live without.
