    - 65 seccond timeout when opening a network file On an SBS 2000 network, the users experience a delay of 65 secconds before the file they selected opens.After the first file is opened, subsequent files open instantly.If you do not access the network for about 30 mins, the delay returns for the first file you open.     - Report Availability from SBS Hey all; This is probably really easy for some of you but bare with me. I am running SBS2K and would like a report that tells me when a specific user logged in and logged out. I know in the Resource Kit there is a report that tells me when they LAST logged in, but what I need is one that tells me the user name, the initial login time, and the last log off time.     - Routing and RemotAccess After harddrive problem got the server up by renameing system.sav to system in system/config directory. Have done few reinstall of everything using setting up your server .... most things working Cannot get Routing and remoteacess services to start tried removing and reconfigureing and here are some of the messages....     - SQL SP3 and HfNetchkLt/Pro I have the latest and greatest free version of HfNetChkPro (4.0.76.4) installed on a workstation. Can anyone tell me whether the free version will allow you to push down SQL service packs ande/or hotfixes to the SBS server?     - ISA server I have a client running SBS2k and ISA with two NICs in the server. The ISA work fine for everyone except for 1 or two sites. I have one user that must access a site and it fails throught the proxy server. What do I need to do to let this user have direct Internet access? Currently, if I turn off proxy and just point him to the internal address of the SBS system as default gateway, it doesn't work. I just want this one user to be able to bypass the ISA server.     - NNTP Newsfeed I have set up a peer newsfeed via Exchange system manager on SBS, and I actually tested it with this newsgroup. I input all details and in my public folder structure, Internet Newsgroups appears once the feed has been activated. It drills down the tree to the correct newsgroup but there is nothing in there and I get an ndr report in my inbox if I try and post anything to it. It has 3 segments and 4 NICs in the server (3 internal and 1 external) Internal 192.168.0.100 Internal 192.168.1.100 Internal 192.168.2.100 External xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx I recently decided to reinstall Windows XP on a users PC which was running very slowly, taking ages to log in and occasionally crashing. The users machine was on segment 2 (192.168.2.100), but I brought it back to my office on segment 0 (192.168.0.100) to reinstall the o/s and software. It worked perfectly and was much faster on startup, so I returned the machine to segment 2 only to start it up and get the same errors again! it does seem to be running ok though in general - just wondered if anyone could shed any light on why this might be happening. The only advice I've received so far was to throttle back the NIC in the PC to 100Mbs Half Duplex rather than auto detect, but this made no difference.     - how secure is my ip setup for internet connection currently I have the following setup in place: sbserver with 1 internal nic and 1 external nic. netgear dg814 ADSL router connected to server only via external nic. internal ip range: 192.168.16.xx server: 192.168.16.2 external nic: static internet ip xxx.xxx.xxx.70(assigned by isp) router: static internet ip xxx.xxx.xxx.69(assigned by isp) Under the internet connection wizard I have allowed isa packet filtering allowing access to: mail server web server web based mail server pop3 ftp SB server box is only server in office and is the file and mail server and therefore contains all critical information for business. everything is working well including internet sharing via proxy server and outlook web access, but I am concerned that the server is open to internet security threats. I have only the standard ISA filters inplace that the internet connection wizard sets up by default. Any advice as to the security of this setup would be greatly apreciated.     - DLT 4000 20/40 question We have been using a DLT 20/40 drive for a while now and resently added an addtional 20/40 to boost the capacity of the fulll backup because it takes 2 tapes to do it.     - email stuck in queue between exchange 2000 servers We have an (apparently) working exchange 2000 server to replace our SBS. We can move email accounts from the SBS to the new server with AD users & computers. However test email sent from an account on the new server to an account on the SBS just sit in queue on the SBS, with a bounce message.     - Imaging SBS onto removable storage I was thinking about imaging an sbs server C: drive onto a DVD disk using ghost of something similar. I thought it would have be good to use something like an external DVD writer as I could use the same device on a number of sites and the only cost per site would be one DVD disk. The device I originally had in mind was an HP external DVD writer that connects via USB 2 or IEEE1394 - but then it occurred to me that to take the image I must be in DOS and USB, etc would not be available.     - Exchange Drive Size Problems Currently we have a partition on the server that houses out exchange server. This drive is 15gig in size. However I am now finding that after a weeks worth of logs the drive is filled up and exhange shuts down. I m wondering what is the easiest way to decrease the size of the exchange server folder? The backup is exhange aware so the logs are getting flushed. But there are only about 500 meg so it realy does not provide that much space to provide any sort of cushion. How can I solve this.     - SP4 and VPN broken Hello, Fresh install of SBS2K and SBS SP1. Problem: When VPN is established from outside the network, I am unable to view computers in the SBS network or any of it's resources..... but the VPN connection is established.     - Cal license floppy does not work with LS-120 drive When I try and add a 5 clent license pack for SBS 2000 I run it from the floppy as required but after the I agree screen I get a message stating that the driver is either write protected or damaged (of which it is neither) and that this disk cannot be used on a ls-120 drive.     - Restricting software client workstations can run? Hi, I've been asked an interesting question by one of my customers. How can I prevent client workstations connecting to SBS from running certain programs on them, the workstations are XP professional.     - Backup solutions, why not...? I gather that you guys recommend DLT tape solutions for=20 backup. Well, we need a new tape backup solution due to=20 the demise of Onstream. The problem is that I know what=20 my boss's reaction will be when I tell him the cost of a=20 DLT drive (=A3900 or more), it'll be short, rude, and=20 hazardous to my health. Why therefore do you guys not=20 recommend more amicably priced solutions such as: DAT, AIT, Travan, DDS.     - SBS2000 CALs setup failed When I try to add licenses disk on my new SBS2000 server, after 1 minute I get the following message : setup.exe - Application error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006).     - Can't Ping the server from the outside I have a new SBS w/2 nic setup,and ran the internet connection wizard. Everything seemed to be working fine until I tried remote admin.     - DNS records for .local setup My server is server.workgroup.domain.local. My website is domin.com. Public external DNS servers host my www record that point to my external web host's site and a MX record that points to my SBS Exchange server. My users tell me that certain people from certain domains can't send them emails successfully. How do my DNS records and zones need to be configured to allow external email servers to find and resolve my mail server? Currently I have a forward lookup zone, workgroup.domain.local that has the SOA and host records for that zone. There is also a reverse lookup zone for my subnet.     - Archiving Data Files Our users like to keep files that date back to Adam&Eve era. (e.g. *.doc *.xls) So what i need to do is archive them to CD.     - DCOM and EventID 10009 I've recently replaced a server and I'm now seeing complaints from a DCOM process claiming that it cannot contact the old server using any configured protocols and logging event ID 10009. This is being logged on the internal SBS server (not the replacement machine). Source is DCOM, category None, Event ID 10009, User is NT Authority\System, message cut-n-pasted below; DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer anubis using any of the configured protocols. I've had a go at finding and fixing this in the past which ultimately proved unsuccessful, but did eliminate a few lurking references to the old server name. These events are occuring once per minute for serveral hours and then stop for an seeminly abitrary period of time and then start again. (Of course they usually stop a few minutes after I get a fraction of time to look at the problem). I used filemon from sysinternals, and the process that *appears* to be related is emsmta.exe, access to emsmta is bracketting the entry that looks to be writing the event log. So Exchange is my most likely culprit, I've trawled through all the configuration/property panels that I can think of and can find no explicit reference to the old server name. It's causing any operational issues (that I know of) but it is filling the system event log and hence making spot real problems difficult.     - Instant Messaging I have finally implimented the instant messaging option in exchange in a new SBS installation. I am using the 4.7 messenger on the clients. I am having serious speed issues with it running. Everything else exchange related is running fine, adding a new contact in Messenger takes about 1 minute in which messenger appears to be locked up. When you click on somebody to send them a message it takes 5-10 seconds before you can type anything to them. Any ideas on how I can improve the performance of this feature?     - SBS 2003 OWA Premium I just installed SBS2003RC1 and most everything works great. Really like the new features. Only issue I can tell so far is when users log into the server and attempt to access OWA via Premium Client many of the features don't work. For example, when OWA Premium opens all the email is shown in the Inbox and a right-click shows a menu as expected, but when you choose open from the menu or double-click nothing happens. Is is just RC1 or am I missing something? All in all SBS2003 is a MAJOR improvement in look and feel. The intranet capabilities are awesome. Can't wait for the final release. Thanks! So I thought," Yeah, right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right? Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works....also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it.     - SBS2000 Exchange memory leak Hello, I currently am working on a SBS 2000 system with the default exchange server 2000 installed. It recently developed a memory leak on the store.exe and will run out of availble memory in about 3-4 days. I recently patched exchange server 2000 with SP3 for exchange, hoping it would fix it. However it has not. I currently have SP4 for Windows 2000, and all of the other updates are installed as well.     - OT: Breaking Passwords This is from Woody's Windows Watch newsletter: Fast Cracking Windows XP Passwords No doubt you've read about the researchers who found a way to crack Windows passwords at a breathtaking rate. CNET's Robert Lemos ran the original story last week. I've seen the results mangled by the press in several places, so permit me to recap. Philippe Oechslin at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne refined a very fast method for cracking certain kinds of alphanumeric passwords. His method works by using two CD's worth of data to help speed up the cracking calculations: by using what amount to pre-digested calculations, his new method runs rings around earlier crackers. Windows passwords are particularly vulnerable to this pre-digesting trick because Windows always encodes passwords the same way, on any PC. That isn't news to anyone who understands the details of Windows'password encryption technique, but it permitted Dr. Oechslin to come up with a whole bunch of pre-digested (portions of) passwords that will work on any PC. Worth noting: Linux "salts" each password, so the encoding comes up different on different machines. That makes it impossible to come up with this kind of pre-digested list. Luca Wullschleger and Claude Hochreutiner, also at EPFL, wrote a program and a Web interface http://lasecpc13.epfl.ch/ntcrack/ to show just how well Dr. Oechslin's method works. As we went to press, the demo program cracked about half of the passwords that people fed into it. On average, it took 7.7 seconds to crack each one. (My 12-character test password was cracked in less than three seconds.) The demo was so popular that Luca and Claude pulled it from the Web site - 1,000,000 hits in a week. At this moment, Dr. Oechslin's program only works with alphanumeric passwords - if you use punctuation marks (as I strongly recommend in my books), your chances of being cracked quickly go down significantly. For now. But it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a big collection of pre-digested passwords that include punctuation marks - assuming it hasn't been done already. This isn't a gaping security hole in Windows. In order to reconstitute the original password, you have to be able to get at the encrypted version of the password, and that (generally) isn't easy - anyone who can get at the encrypted version of the password can get at your data anyway, and they can decrypt the data at leisure. But it should serve as a wake-up call. Windows passwords aren't ultra-secure. They can be broken - with ease, in some cases. You can make a potential breaker's job considerably more difficult by putting punctuation marks in your passwords.     - Sending email I am currently running sbs 2K on a single machine and have installed exchange server and ISA server. I was able to send and receive email through exchange but not with ISA filter packets enabled. I got help through this forum and used internet connection wizard to get things set. I was able to get email to receive through my filter packets but not send email from outlook on any client machines. If I disable filter packets I still cannot send email out. If I send from the ISA server it goes out fine. When I send from a client machine I get the following error message. Task 'pop.earthlink.net - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or ISP.     - website and DNS issues I currently have a SBS setup as follows: I have a registered domain name mydomain.com and I am running IIS on the server so that internet users can access their email through OWA. There is a third party web hosting provider that is hosting the main web site. Here is the problem, whenever internal users try to access the main website, they cannot. Either ISA, or DNS is not allowing them to see it. I am guessing the when the server processes the request, it is thinking it is the www.mydomain.com when there is nothing hosted locally execpt OWA.     - OWA - Unauthorized error for all except Administrator Hi: I've just set up my first SBS box and I'm having a problem getting OWA to work. I can log on as administrator and it works fine, but normal users can't get in. I've checked the settings in the users, and they're at the default enabled for HTTP. I've also gone through MS KB article 327843 with no success. My only book resource, SBS2000 Best Practices, is of no use (as an aside, if anyone has any better suggestions for reference, I'd be grateful). Any ideas would be appreciated.
