Firstly, I know this isn't the SBS 2003 group, but I am under pressure big
time here and don't have time to use other news servers at the moment.

A customer has SBS2003 Premium. Running on a high spec IBM server.

We rebooted because of backup problems and upon logging in, and the desktop
coming up, I get the following message:

mmc.exe - Unable to locate component
(red X) This application has failed to start because MFC42u.dll was not
found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Because of this, I can't get into things like the event viewer. Other apps
seem to be OK.

Thanks in advance

is it reasonable to assume you have re-booted a second time??

Assuming the dll is really missing from the \system32 directory, how about
running the system file checker (sfc /scannow)? That should replace the
file and hopefully solve the problem.

Yes, did indeed.

See the other reply for my feedback.

Thanks for your help.

I already tried the sfc to no avail.

The mfc42u.dll was indeed missing from windows/system32, so I manually
extracted it from the install CD and placed it in the folder.

Ther server is functioning perfectly now.

Thanks for your help.

It seems a little disappointing that the sfc didn't resolve this, let alone
that the dll went missing in the first place. I thought server 2k3 was
supposed to prevent altering system files even without having to run sfc.
Anyway, glad to hear you resolved it.
