I am currently running sbs 2K on a single machine and have
installed exchange server and ISA server. I was able to
send and receive email through exchange but not with ISA
filter packets enabled. I got help through this forum and
used internet connection wizard to get things set. I was
able to get email to receive through my filter packets but
not send email from outlook on any client machines. If I
disable filter packets I still cannot send email out. If
I send from the ISA server it goes out fine. When I send
from a client machine I get the following error message.

Task 'pop.earthlink.net - Sending and Receiving' reported
error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was
interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your
server administrator or ISP.

Since I am the server admin, this obviously will not be
the solution, kinda embarassing...

Oh well... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. This has been an excellent forum!

silly questions I know, but

1. is internet working on your client machines
2. port 25 is enabled outbound in your packet filters is it not?

Yes, firewall client is installed on the client. As for
sending via exchange, I have been unsuccessful in finding
resources on how to configure exchange to handle this. I
may be a dolt in not understanding how to use exchange to
send. I am running exchange on my server through my ISP,
no DSL or high speed access here in this backward part of
the country, new IP address each time I connect.

Hi cstech . . .

Setting up Exchange is pretty easy in SBS. Most of the ground work is done
for you when you run the Internet Connection Wizard. You can configure the
Pop3 Connector in Exchange to download your messages (and each users') from
your ISP email account and deliver them to your Exchange mailboxes. Then on
your workstation, just create a new account for Exchange server, enter your
server name and user name and you should be good to go. Whenever you send a
message, Exchange takes care of delivering it. Likewise, all email is
stored in Exchange, allowing you to back it up each night and access it from
any PC on the network.

It shouldn't be a problem at all . . . I've got the exact same setup at
home - SBS running Exchange with an internal domain of *.local - mail is
pulled from the ISP via the POP3 Connector and sent out through my ISP's
mail server . . .

How is Exchange configured to send mail? Are you sending through a smart
host (ie, your ISP's outbound mail server), or via DNS? If sending via
smarthost, does your ISP require outbound authentication?

Chad,

Yes, I am configured to send through smarthost and I have
it configured for my ISP outbound mail server (I think)
smtp.earthlink.net and I have tried authentication as
well. Still no go.

Are you configuring SMTP connector for your outbound? I
only have 56k dial up to work with and have the conection
times set for on the hour and half hour during weekdays
and only on the hour for weekends. I think I am begining
to understand the correlation between exchange and
outlook, but the reason for not being able to send mail
still eludes me.
