exchange server MDBDATA
we have a major problem with the amount of space being
used by some files in the following location C:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata
in this location there are hundreds of 5mb text documents,
there is also a file named priv1.edb which is a huge
1.25gb.
we need to free space urgently. I am told this has
previously been done by deleting the older 5mb text
documents from this location, apparently this has worked,
but i really dont see it as a good soloution.
can anyone advise me the best way to solve this problem
and manage it in future.
does anyone else have such huge files in this folder?

Hi all,
BIG email problem here. Hope someone can point us in the
right direction.
SBS2K - Win XP Pro client laptop running OL2K3
Originally running in Cached Exchange Mode
Stopped receiving new mail [could see it using OWA]
Had to stop using Cached Exchange Mode and thereby
prevented from using Junk Mail Filter
Returned from week's annual leave to find 1500 emails!
So, did the following to try to work around it:
Manually copied the entire contents of my mailbox [about
360Mb] to a PST file
Logged off network
Deleted my user and Exchange mailbox from the SBS Server
Created a new user with same logon, name and password
Logged back onto network [created new profile but that's
a far lesser issue]
Created new mail profile for Outlook connecting to new
[and clean] Exchange mailbox - fine so far [and now
working again using Cached Exchange Mode]
Manually copied items back from PST file to new mailbox -
again, fine so far
However, although internal emails work fine, incoming
mail from external sources is being received by our SBS
box but being noted as being Undeliverable with an error
as noted below:
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
8b46051eb5ed59478f58df66d30d42a5@adsi.dat
The destination server for this recipient could not be
found in Domain Name Service (DNS)
HELP!
I assume this is because 'something' in either Exchange,
Active Directory and/or DNS is 'looking' for the old
mailbox and not finding it but how do we get things
resolved from this point on?

What is better using Terminal services with a VPN or just terminal services
Hi Everyone
Have to setup a solution where by one of the staff access data remotely.
They want to be able to have Outlook, Access to Excel spreadsheets, Word
Docs and Attache Accounting.
The connection will most probably be via the internet (using a dial up to
the internet) then to the server which is connected to the internet via ADSL
What solution should I use
1. Just a VPN
2. VPN connection to the server then connect Terminal services.
3. TS direct to the server.
Any help would be appreciated

SBS2000 / WinXP SP2 / Remote Desktop Access
Im trying to access my clients server over the net as Ive
always done but its not allowing me to connect anymore. The
only thing thats changed is Ive installed SP2 on my comp.
Whenever I try to connect it comes up with
"The specified remote computer could not be found. Verify
that you have typed in teh correct computer name etc......"
I can still connect ot OWA & VPN though. Is there a way of
me getting to the config menus via VPN instead? As the
client is quite a way away I would like to get this back up
and running. I have also tried using the static IP address
instead but its made no difference other than it takes a
minute or two to time out. I have had the server rebooted

Some users can't get access to OWA and other do.
Please help. Some users have access to OWA and can read their emails and
others don't. they are not event asked to authenticate they get "The page
cannot be found" Why is this happenning. I'm using SBS2000. Any inputs will

Can't Figure out Remote Desktop
I have been trying to get Remote Desktop working and can not figure it
out...i have SBS 2000 with about 19 xp clients...i want to be able to
log into a client from home using my laptop...my laptop and all of the
clients are running XP Pro...I setup a test machine and enabled Remote
Desktop on it and on the laptop i try to go into it but can't login
using the IP address or anything i can think of...it just times out...
To be honest, i know i'm missing something very simple...i am
connected to the internet with the laptop at home and the desktop at
work is on the network...
I've looked online for instructions, but everything i try hasn't
worked...it is almost llike they are assuming people know how to do it
and are glossing over things that are important...
does anyone know of simple step by step instructions i can follow to
enable whatever i need to to get it working?

Hello Group,
I have SBS2000 and the server has a modem installed. I'd like to provide
OUTBOUND fax services to a particular SBS user.
Any advice as to safety and advisability of enabling this service and is
there a "cook-book" on how to install the client side?
Server side is already setup..but not configured with the particulars...i.e.
SSID etc.

Administrator can't logon locally
I've made a mess of something in Group Policy Management.
I was trying to change policy settings so that a specific
set of Users can login via terminal services.
Now, whenever I try to logon to the server console as
administrator, I get a message 'The local policy of this
machine does not allow you to logon interactively'
The 'Allow logon locally' setting includes administtors,
So I don't understand what is wrong. Fortunately, I have
another user account which is in the administators group.

Hi
We have just upgraded to SBS2003 on to a clean server. OWA
works fine internally. We cant log in to OWA from external
sites. We only get page cannot be displayed, the correct
port is open on the firewall we can get to

Hi
If sbs2000 has all patches (IIS, ISA, ADODB etc. etc.) should I still be
able to create intranet web pages using FP2002 and use the Database Wiz to
easily create ASP pages that connect to FP created Access dbs?
Or is it problematic? - e.g. because of the IIS lockdown thing, or lack of
FP extension?

SBC 2000 to SBC 2003
I have a question for you, hope you can answer that.
I have a Windows Server 2000, with built in Exchange 2000 all in Small
Business Edition.
Now this company is expanding and 35 users my exceed to 70 users.
So the existing Small Business Edition won't work for them.
I recommended a standard business edition, exchange 2003 side by side,
join the domain.
My question to you is, if we install a new Standard Business edition
with exchange 2003, can we migrate the existing Exchange 2000 to new
server?
Do we need to join to the existing server?
Is it not a good idea to buy a new Exchange 2003 standard business
edition?
How easy it is to migrate the emails and stop the old server, would
there be any conflicts?
Can we remove or stop the exchange server 2000 which is small business
server so it will not conflict with the server?

Backup Domain Controller
Good morning all. I'm looking for the brains out there.
Can I have MS Windows SBS 2003 (Standard or Premium Ed) as
a backup domain controller for MS Windows SBS 2000, so
that when our Primary Domain Controller (SBS 2000) fails
or is turned off, SBS 2003 will take over and allow users
to at least logon and access client data? And maybe even
access the Internet, access their email via SMTP and POP3
(via Exchange Server & MS Outlook)?
I have looked in many parts of the MS website for this
info, but to no avail... as expected. Can you help?

External mail unreceived??
I volunteer with a church's technology needs, and one (only one) of
their users is currently having a problem receiving external mail
(internal mail send/receive works, and sending externally works).
Their setup is as follows:
-12-15 workstations, almost all running XP & Outlook 2003
-1 NT Server, running Small Business Server (unsure of version, but
old), and Exchange 5.5
-DSL w/ static IP providing connectivity to Internet, internal
workstations internally addressed
-off-site Web host provides web space and pop3 accounts
Mainly because of how the setup was done in the past (dial-up
connection, etc.), the current email routing is as follows. Email
flows from sender to web host pop3 accounts - MX record points to web
host servers, not in-house exchange server. The exchange server then
uses a POP3 connector to connect every 15 minutes and suck down the
mail, then the mail is routed to the workstations via
Exchange/Outlook.
Every user can send/receive both external & internal except for one.
He can send/receive internally, and can send external mail, but cannot
receive external. I know the email arrives at the web host b/c we are
able to view it in their webmail program. But after 15 minutes it
appears to be sucked down with all the other mail. No error message
is ever received by the sender of a message to this user. I couldn't
get access to the church server closet to check the NT event log, but
I will try soon & post.

Trend Micro Officescan - Management Console
I have SBS 2000 c/w Officescan 5.58. I can't login to officescan admin
management console. I get the login screen, type in my password.......then
enter then nothing....just refreshes my screen and blanks out the password
field. I know i have the right password.....any ideas??

SBS2k Client OS Option?
We are deploying some new client desktops. We've always used WindowsXP Pro
as our client OS to join to our SBS2k domain. However, we're looking for
the first time at machines that come pre-installed with WindowsXP MEDIA
CENTER.
I've looked and asked, but can't find a definitive document that says
WindowsXP MC is/is not an alternative to WindowsXP Pro as part of a SBS2k
domain.
Any experience, knowledge, cautions here?

gradwell and exchange or any smtp mail server
i just thought ... if anyones using gradwell.com for their email along
with exchange you could also use the mail protocol ODMR for mail
delivery to your exchange mailbox.
gradwell supply a piece of software that initiates the odmr call and
turns it round into a local smtp delivery so basically you dont need to
open port 25 on your firewall at all unless you've got other reasons for
it or have odmr support in the mail server software as it is turned into
smtp.
odmr is like pop3 on steroids. all the routing problems by the mail
envelope being discarded does not happen with odmr so the mail gets
delivered to where it needs to be just like smtp.
i was using odmr with a mail server called mailtraq but since moving
jobs have been working with exchange.
no link with gradwell other than happy customer and thought id mention
it as it means you can close off port 25 and not have the exchange box

We have SBS2000 running OfficeScan should I also have the client part
running on the server? the reason I ask is, I have had it running on it and
when OfficeScan cleans a e-mail in exchange the real time scan will find it
in the exchange folders and tell me it can't clean it but when I check the
scan logs for exchange it shows that the e-mail has been deleted. also does
anyone know how to reset/clear the client view in the console of officescan,
when you open it any clients in the past that have detect a virus show up
with a red dot how do you reset this I run a scan at the machine and all is
clear but when you look in the console it's still marked as infected.

ISDN Connections through ISA Server
I have an SBS2000 server running ISA server, but am
trying to setup a sarian ISDN modem to use to connect
directly to the bank over an ISDN line and carry
credit card transactions from the card swipes on our new
EPOS system.
The modem and ISDN line have been fully tested and work
fine on other machines, but when it is connected to the
server i cannot get to the webaccess config page and if i
attempt to do a credit card transaction from one of the
tills it comes back saying there is no carrier signal.
The sarian is definately installed on the server as i can
see it using hyperterminal and it is registered in the
device manager so it must be ISA server that is blocking
the traffic attempting to use the ISDN connection.

I think I know the answer to this already but I will ask. Have a current
SBS2k server, wanted to test SBS2003 premium edition. Is there a way to test
both on the network at the same time? I am assuming not but trying anyway.
Owner wants SBS2003 to be rock solid before deploying and he is waiting for
more service packs. I want to deploy both servers on the name network, both
running on two different servers. I was going to test the SBS2003 offsite
but it would be nice onsite. I am assuming they cannot be on the same
subnets. How do I test both at the same time? Thanks, all.

Microsoft has released the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP systems. The
service pack is currently available in a form that can be used to update
multiple Windows systems. The release that can update a single system
is still awaited. This service pack offers enhanced security features
to better protect users from worm attacks like Blaster and Sasser,
Internet Explorer vulnerabilities and other malicious code.
Council Site Actions:
Most council sites have begun action on this Service Pack release. Most
of these sites are doing regression testing to determine compatibility
and have not yet set a deployment date. One site is currently deploying
in stages and looking for incompatibilities. Another site is monitoring
NTBugtraq to see what pain early implementers experience.

Ex-Verizon Wireless employee charged with $20 million fraud
A former Verizon Wireless employee was indicted
by a federal grand jury Thursday on charges he

prepaid cellular telephone service. Timothy

Microsoft's patch train rolled into town last night
with one solitary occupant. After the release of XP
SP2 last Friday it's just as well that the only extra
thing sysadmins have to contend with is a not-especially
devastating vulnerability involving Exchange. Microsoft
has issued a patch which aims to address a cross-site
scripting and spoofing vulnerability in Outlook Web
Access feature of Exchange Server 5.5. This flaw could
be exploited to trick a user into running a malicious
script, which would run in the security context of
a user. It may also be possible to exploit the flaw
to manipulate Web browser caches and intermediate

Drive letter
Hi
Does anyone know how to change the drive letter for a floppy drive. I have 1
external usb floppy and no internal floppy and i want to change the usb to
A: From B: and i am stuck as disk management doesn't show floppy drives. I
disabled the floppy disk controller and it made the A: it thinks is there
disappear from my computer but i still can change the drive letter.

XP SP2 and LaCie Firewire Drives
Just a heads up for anyone with a LaCie external device that supports
Firewire 800.
If you're planning to install XP SP2, make sure you get and install the
11 Aug Firmware update from LaCie first, or your LaCie device will
become unusable post-SP2. Indeed, XP with SP2 will not boot properly
with such a LaCie device attached. This applies even if the connection
you're using is Firewire 400.

then we had to deal with Hurricane Charley. And the push is on for SMB

Help With ISDN and ISA server
I have an SBS2000 server running ISA server, but am trying to setup a sarian
ISDN modem to use to connect directly to the bank over an ISDN line and carry
credit card transactions from the card swipes on our new EPOS system.
The modem and ISDN line have been fully tested and work fine on other
machines, but when it is connected to the server i cannot get to the
webaccess config page and if i attempt to do a credit card transaction from
one of the tills it comes back saying there is no carrier signal.
The sarian is definately installed on the server as i can see it using
hyperterminal and it is registered in the device manager so it must be ISA
server that is blocking the traffic attempting to use the ISDN connection.

I've always used the EICAR test virus
(http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm) to verify the operation of
my virus scanning software, but somehow never became aware of the services
that will e-mail you a test virus for the same purpose. Although there are
several of these services, this one will send you a variety of formats (your
choice), and doesn't require any signup or verification of your e-mail
address. I've been testing ZIP file scanning, and that's one of the choices

Please help I'm in the middle of a activating the Exhange 2000 mailboxes
Hi everyone:
It's Saturday argh!!.. and I'm activating the Exchange 2000 mailboxes on
each computer 4 computers are working so far with Outlook 2002 and 2003. But
there are bunches of pc's Outlook 2000, 2002 who can send emails to people
within our domain and to email addresses outside our domain, I can confirm
that all the messages are being delivered, but when I reply to the user
using an outside account ex. from yahoo.com the message is never downloaded
to the user. When I try send and receive from the Exchange user mailbox I
don't see the reply message from my yahoo account that I had sent. Please
help, I need to solve this. The user is using Outlook 2000. Any help will be
appreciated. Not too much experience, first time doing this. I'm using a SBS
2000

Those files are useful for our workgroup, and this is the second time.
I suspect of several guys, and i want to know who was.

I have a SBS 2003, can not resolve the IP address of yahoo, google. Very
strange.

help with relay problems
I have searched this site and smallbizserver.net - and used a few MS KB
articles to resolve what appears to be a relay problem on my server. I
recently set up OWA using SSL. All of a sudden I'm getting 100 non
deliverable messages each day. I have followed the steps to turn off
relaying on the server and yet I can still see IPs pop up in the Current
Sessions section of the Default SMTP Virtual Server. I have turne on max
logging and I don't see anyone logging in. I can't figure out how to stop
this. I stopped the Default SMTP Virtual Server until I can figure it out -
will this prevent relaying?

\\Access path not found etc messages
Hi,
This is a weird one. I have a small network consisting
of desktop and laptop PC's attached to an SBS 2000
server. They all work fine i.e. log-on / off the
network, can access everything they need on the server
etc.
However if I sit at the server and using explorer via My
Network Places click on three of the PC's (2 x desktop
and 1 x laptop) after a few minutes of watching the 'egg
timer' I get a \\xxxxx path not found message for one
desktop and the laptop or \\xxxx cannot find server
message for the other desktop. By the way the same PC
that gives the cannot find server message also tries to
become the master browser from time to time thus logging
an error in the event log?!! I can access all other PC's
with no problem.
Sitting at each of these PC's I can ping both the local
loop back and fixed IP address with no problem using both
the IP address and DNS names. Sitting at the server and
trying to ping these three PC's using both the IP address
and DNS name all I get is timeout errors.
Does anyone have any ideas why this should be happening?
By the way all desktops / laptops are Windows XP Pro and
all machines are at the latest update levels.

Cannot delete old LAN Connection
Hello,
I've installed SBS 2003 on my new server.
I want to remove my peer-to-peer LAN connection and
create a new one to my server.
I cannot delete the old LAN connection. Selecting advance
properties results in an error dialog box "Unexpected
error occured"
Tried removing the connection via dos command with no
luck. The delete button is greyed out.
Any suggestions on how to force the removal of this LAN

I have a SBS2000 server which we uninstalled SBS 2000 from it.
We then installed(upgraded) server 2000 on it
We still continually get messages that a SBS200 server cannot be upgraded to
Server 2003,
Any suggestions to get past this?

Windows updates not installing
Hi,
I have SBS 2003 standard.
All updates were installing OK.
Until Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB870669).
This pops up with this update hasn't passed windows logo testing and won't
install.
Then when the next round of updates came out:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows Server 2003
(KB867801) etc etc
These all fail to install.
How do I get past this problem.

email failures
Hi all
Hoping once again someone can be of assistance. My client is running SBS2K,
exchange server, etc and has suddenly developed a strange problem. There is
a specific email provider that they are unable to send mail to. They can
receive mail from two individuals but get immediate mail failure when either
replying or creating new e-mails. The mail host is snet.net They get mail
from abc123@snet.net but cannot return mail to them. I have contacted SBC
tech support (no luck) and have sent mail to their web services host but
haven't heard back. Can anyone shed sodme light??

SIP VoIP Phone (Snom 200)
Hi,
I've installed a small network with a SBS 2003 Pro server
as its domain controller etc. I'm trying to use SIP as my
VoIP telephone system.
I've succesfully set up a SIP telephone connection using a
Software Telephone on one of the Window XP Pro desktops.
However I can't get a dedicated SIP telephone (A SMON 200)
to work. It gets its local IP address and gateway info etc
corectly from the SBS2003 DHCP service but then can't get
any Internet access. It can't even connect to a time
server.
How do I allow a network device like a VoIP dedicated
telephone access to the Internet through the ISA firewall
(which I assume is blocking the phones trafic)?

Disk space 'disappearing'
Hello,
The disk space on my system drive appears to be disappearing. According to
the drive properties, I have a 4,055 MB partition, of which 3,653 MB is
currently used, leaving 402MB free
If I analyise the contents of the drive, the following space is reported as
being used.
Program File 1,475 MB
WINNT 1,312 MB
[root] 257 MB
Inetpub 57 MB
Documents & settings 41 MB
Other folders (Total) 0.1 MB
TOTAL 3,142 MB
Does anyone know where the missing 511 MB is and how I can get it back?
I have checked that the above figures for the space used by the folders are
the actual disk space used (total of file sizes is 3,105 MB) and as far as I
can tell, I have included all hidden/system folders/files.
The only folder I have any doubt about, is 'System Volume Information' which
I cannot seem to access in anyway.
I am running SBS 2000 with SP4 on a Dell PowerEdge 2400 with a RAID 5 disk
array.

Upgrade from one W2K SBS to one W2K3 Enterprise Server and one W2K3 Standard Server
As of today, my company has one server running W2K SBS.
We have bought a new server and are now going to upgrade to W2K3
Server.
I was wondering if anybody has suggestion to do the following:
* We want the new server to be the domain controller, with W2K3
Enterprise edition running on it.
* We want to install W2K3 Standard Server on the old server, and
install Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition on this one as well. This
server becomes a member of the new domain server which will be running
on the new server.
How would you guys out there approach this scenario?
Hope you can be a little detailed here, so I don't get anything wrong.
