Hello All,

One of my clients is having trouble with spam. I think
much of it may be due to the email addresses having been
published on their website and that their email server
was being used as an open relay before I came on. I
stopped both of those and installed GFI to try to
filter. It has gotten a better, but it is still pretty
bad. I am wondering what are the necessary steps to
change email handles from, for example,
BobA@thecompany.com to bob.bobslastname@thecompany.com.
I am not wondering so much the exact steps to do this as
I believe that is straight-forward, but rather, is there
a way to allow the user to check old and new accounts
separately for a period of time.

TIA,

cjmaxey

Thank you for posting your question to the Newsgroup.

The easiest way to change e-mail addresses is by using recipient policies.
Go to the Exchange System Manager and expand the Recipients folder, double
click the "default policy" and click the e-mail addresses tab.

Click New and select the type of address you want to create (SMTP in this
case). Enter the address you would like each user to be stamped with...
You can use the following variables to define e-mail address values:

- %g - Given Name (First Name)
- %i - Middle Initial
- %s - Surname (Last Name)

By default, the SMTP address uses the alias value of the recipient to
define the left side of the SMTP address. You can override this default
using wildcards. For example, the default SMTP address for users is
alias@domainname. To generate the SMTP address
firstname.lastname@domainname, you can create a new recipient policy that
specifies the SMTP address value as follows:

%g.%s@domainname

Personally, I don't think that will stop the flow of spam mail. Once they
've found that @thecompany.com is a valid email domain, they will try to
send email to randon email addresses: postmaster@..., info@..., sales@....

Also, define what you think is bad? Last month I had 7,459 spam emails come
in versus 766 potentially valid emails. But that's 7,459 that got caught on
the server (I use IHateSPam Server Edition).

If you use SMTP mail, and your email addresses are not being forwarded, you
might look into the free ORF filter.

Hi Kevin,

I saw that the same people that make iHateSpam also makes other tools.
Have you used, in particular LanHound and any of the AD products?

Is there a security suite that handles virus, ids, firewall, spam, etc.
for sbs that is good?

You should really consider the Trend Micro products for your antivirus.

Some SBS'ers are using others but many of the MVPs use the Trend =
products

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. The spam
filter is catching a ton of spam, but users are still
complaining. In a month, GFI is stopping approx. 10,000
spam. Some users are saying they still get btw. 40 - 60
a day. Not all users have a problem with it.

I was thinking that will the spammers will try random
email addresses, they won't try something like

floyd.peter@rcwegman.com

but they probably will try

petea, peteb, .... petef ... petez
floyda, ... floydz

Thanks for your advice, I will check out IHateSpam.
