I have a client running SBS 2000 with a dynamic IP address. I have
repeatedly tried to get this converted to static but no one will listen to
me. Naturally, outbound e-mail is a problem. I tried using a smarthost for
all the outbound e-mail, but the outbound mail queue would get stuck until I
switched it back to DNS. But when I use DNS, then AOL and others get cranky
because it's a dynamic IP. Finally, I set up a second SMTP connector just
for AOL and its ilk, leaving everything else on DNS. I had about one or two
dozen domains on the smarthost. This seemed to work for a long time, but
yesterday the client called complaining that the e-mail routed through the
smarthost was not making it out. When we look at the status of the smarthost
SMTP connector, it shows "unavailable." Right-clicking on it and starting it
releases the mail, but shortly afterward the connector goes down again. The
smarthost (a cable ISP) pings okay, and I was able to set up Outlook Express
on the server with an account at the ISP, which worked fine. I need at a
minimum that the smarthost connector resets itself it it goes down so that
the mail eventually goes out. Where do I go from here?

Have you tried specifying the smarthost as an IP address in brackets
([xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]) instead of using the FQDN for the ISP's SMTP server?

No, but worth a shot. I'll give it a try.

Okay, tried that. The smarthost connector went down again within
five minutes. I guess I'm up a creek without a paddle. Dynamic IP addresses
should be outlawed.

What does the ISP say?

I didn't ask, but, you know-- I statred thinking. The ISP is Optimum
Online, what I find to be a lame excuse for an ISP if ever I saw one. I did
a telnet test on mail.optonline.net and it just hung there. Then I
remembered that Optimum has a new higher-priced service called Optimum
Boost, and one of its selling points is that one can open port 25 and/or 80
and run a mail server. Now, this client has had standard business Optimum
all along, and relaying through port 25 to mail.optonline.net has worked--
klunkily-- but it worked. I smell a rat. Do you think Optimum would warn
anyone that Boost would at some point be *required* to use the smarthost?
That's why I hate it. It just isn't a business-class ISP. Business-class
ISP's don't do things like that. They don't make folks such as me waste time
and goodwill figuring these things out for themselves. Cable companies
should stick to entertainment and stop pretending to be ISP's a business can
use.

Sorry. Now I have to tell the client to get Optimum Boost (which,
by the way, STILL does not offer a static IP.They say it will in January,
but I'll believe it when I see it.) Thanks for nudging my brain in the right
direction!
