Hi All, This is my first post to this group.

I have had a SBS 2000 installation running for a few
months now, but every now and again (maybe 4-5 times a
week) the outbound messages seem to get stuck in
the "destination unreachable queue".
Once one message gets stuck in there everything else
seems to pile up behind it.
All SMTP mail is forwarded to our ISP via smart host
setting (also tried with ISP's ip address instead of
FQDN).
The other error I get in the event log is event 4003 the
domain "whateveritis.com" is currently unreachable" .
This relates to the domain that I was trying to get an
email message to in the first place and doesn't seem to
matter what the email address is.
I can send a mail to an email address one day, and maybe
an hour later if I send to the same address that
succeeded before it goes straight to the destination
unreachable queue and locks up all other messages until I
restart the smtp service.

If I restart the SMTP service all messages are delivered.

I found this article on the KB 289808 but my question is
this. Have many of you SBS Admins out there had to do
this disabling 8 bit MIME? It seems quite complex and I
am just wondering if anybody else has had to do it.

Any other ideas would be gratefully accepted?

thx in advance

Andrew

Can't you just send mail without the smarthost? Does your ISP require this?

Does not look to difficult though I understand your hesitation of doing such
a procedure. If you make a backup of the metabase you should be to restore
without any problems.

I have never done this because I don't use smarthosts.

We only have a 128K ISDN line and I believe that when I
initially ran the ICW, this smart host feature was the
recommended way of delivering mail.

What do I have to do to change from this method? run ICW
again? or is there another way?

I am trying to make this a last resort as I am not really
sure if it will fix it anyway.

Yes, just run it again and choose not to use a smart host.

FYI: I am on ISDN and do not use Smart Hosts and never had a problem. But I
highly recommend making sure someone else who is on the Internet 24/7 be a
backup mail spooler for you. As you know, ISDN isn't really a 24/7
connection, it is really a dialup. Then set it up so SBS sends a ETRN to
your backup mail spooler every hour at least.
HTH,
Rick in the Midwest
P.S. I use www.easyDNS.com for my DNS and backup mail spool. So far I've
been pretty impressed with their setup. There are others though. Do you have
a static IP with your ISDN from your ISP?

Thanks for your advice guys and girls, Smart Host is no
more! Using own DNS now (from midnight last night) and
emails are flying out of the building. No jammed queue's
so far, lets hope it stays that way.
