We have a small network (25 users) all using win2k & a SBS 2k server, this
connects to the outside world via a linux firewall, if the firewall (or the
ADSL line) goes down any mail sent during this time ends up in the
destination unreachable queue, understandable, however all subsequent
outgoing mail ends up there also, & the only way to move them is to stop &
restart the SMTP service, any ideas why this is happening? and more
importantly how to stop from happening? & all firewall hardware & software
has been replaced anyway, however we are able to produce this behaviour at
will by simply rebooting the firewall or disconnecting the adsl line, as
soon as there is no connection outgoing mails go into the destination
unreachable queue & stay there and all mail sent after this even though the
connection is back up go in there as well, we can clear them (usually) by
stopping & starting SMTP service but this shouldn't happen?

Any & all suggestions gratefully recieved, I don't have all that much hair
left!

Why aren't you using ISA? You've payed for it already and it won't interfere
with your firewall.
How is the nic setup?
Did you run the ICW-wizard?

I'm not entirely sure why we don't use ISA, it seems to be historical - they
had a lot of problems early on & eliminating ISA cured a lot of them - & its
never been turned back on, I don't want to start a revolution just now but
turning it on again!
The connection was initially setup using the ICW wizard & has worked well
for a long time, over a year we have only been seeing this problem for the
last 6 weeks or so, we have run the wizard again to re create the virtual
server to no avail.
The NIC is on board (Intel) & is setup as installed using all default
settings

Noodle around in the Exchange smtp virtual directory. Open the
Administrator console and expand the Exchange stuff till you see
servers/servername/protocols/virtual smtp and right click for
properties. There are clicks in there for message delivery. How long
your server keeps trying to send messages, how many minutes between
tries, and someother clicks. Somebody may have clicked on try once and
give up.

Does the SBS do the DHCP and DNS-serving? Is it fully patched? The other
server and the clients too?

SBS does the the DNS serving but not DHCP (we use fixed IP addresses, yes
fully patched as are all the workstations (all win2k), there are no other
