Since Win2k3 came out many of us (including me) have been saying that SBS
CALs do not cover additional Win2k3 servers... maybe we are wrong.

I have stumbled across this today... and I would like your comments on this:

"The SBS 2000 CAL covers you for additional Windows 2000 servers, but here's
something you probably didn't know - it also covers you for Windows Server
2003 servers. As far as I know, this hasn't been officially documented
anywhere, but you print this out and keep it in safe place for future
reference. Don't just bookmark it - I can come back and edit this out later,
then deny all knowledge of it."

I mean... it's from MS right??? Enough legal support?

While Mark O'Shea is a pretty darn reliable source (since he does work
for MS!), he hasn't backed up his words with any evidence. Indeed, the
comment about saving the page is telling!

We have other postings from MS personnel indicating that it is not
covered.

I know I'm not prepared to roll out any Win2003 servers in SBS2000
environments without purchasing CALs.

Out of interest, does anyone know how many member servers SBS Cals cover?

I thought it was just the one? I am hoping to add a Win2k3 server as an app
/ filestore server soon in addition to our existing Win2k server.

You can add all the member severs that you want... as long you have SBS CALs
for them (so the maximum will be 49 servers + 1 workstations... using the
max 50 CALs).

I feel the same way... but it makes you wonder.

MS spends millions in making OS that are more user-friendly.... why on earth
Licensing has to be so darn difficult (and different with each new
version)???

I C, I agree with your Licencing comments, surely they must be able to
inplement a better, clearer way of managing licences in SBS now.

Because Lawyers are involved. Anything to do with lawyers immediately
becomes 10 times more complicated than it needs to be, 10 times more
expensive than it need to be and is described with mumbo-jumbo legalese
jargon that no-one but lawyers can understand (meaning yet more people
have to use 'em).
