Hi

We have an SBS2000 server connected to a broadband connection. We would like
to run a low traffic (10-100 users) website in-house. Is it feasible to a)
run the website on the same server or b) have another win2k
professional/server PC in the same domain to run the site? or c) any other
preferred way to do this?

Thanks

Regards

you are able to use SBS to host sites but it is considered bad practice,
mainly due to security concerns.

You could run a 2nd server on the network and use ISA web publishing to
publish it. This is preferred to the first option.

better yet,

broadband

|
router - - DMZ HTTP server
|
|
SBS
|
|
LAN

or best, get the site hosted for a few bucks a month and let them worry
about security of web servers.

ISA web publishing, oooh that sounds complicated. Where do I find out more
on how to set this up between the sbs2000 server and the member server?

Thanks

well, if you go to the ISA console, expand 'publishing', click on 'web
publishing' and hit th 'F1' key you get several pages of info.

www.isaserver.org is also a good resource

aside from security, your upload (their download) speed is what 200k? Spend
the $5/month and outsource it.

Problem is to keep running the same database in-house (desktop app) as well
as giving read-only access to part of it to the web users. Ideally we want
it to be the same access database so the changes made internally can be seen
by web users straight away.

Thanks

Fine, make it a web based app using MySQL and PHP. I am sure it can be
re-ported cheaply. You can better integrate it with your website and still
be a better solution than bringing it inhouse.

Re: Running a web server by Mitch

I am trying to do the same type scenario... How does PHP come into play?
How does the MySQL Server (sitting on 3rd party box) get instant updates of
the Access DB (sitting on office SBS box)? Is this a replication situation?
Also, after contacting our web hoster, I have found out that MySQL is the
only option since they are running Linux servers only... Right now our
website has no DB functionality (designed in frontpage). I was planning on
trying to hosting the web internally so as to use Access db only and not
have to learn MySQL and PHP on top of ASP... What is the best route?
