I am working for a client installing a new Windows Small
Business Server 2003, and I am having some difficulty.

My client has a Dell server, a Dell 16 port switch, and
four client PCs each running Windows XP, as well as a
Netgear ADSL modem/router/WAP device through which a
connection is made to the internet.

I have installed SBS on the server, and have started the
configuration process.

At the moment I am trying to get roaming profiles
working. I believe that I have installed and configured
everything correctly to this point.

I have created four users on the server, as well as the
four client PCs on the server. I have installed Windows
XP on one of the client PCs.

I have set the users up to have roaming profiles - on the
server, I have set a path for the profiles to use. I
believe that I have set the correct share and NTFS
permissions for the directory where profiles are to be
stored.

When I attempt to logon to the client PC as one of the
created users, I get two error messages relating to being
unable to access the roaming profile on the server, and
being unable to create a local profile on the client PC.
I am, however, able to complete the logon process and
can "see" the server from the client PC, whilst logged on
as the user.

When I change one of the users from being a roaming user
to having a local profile, the user is able to log on
correctly, with no errors, and the local profile is
created without any errors.

I am relatively new to administering Microsoft products
having come from a UNIX background, but I believe that I
understand the theory - it is the practice which is
causing me problems.

I have searched the internet for a solution to the
problem, I have purchased the Microsoft Press "Windows
Small Business Server 2003 Administrator's Companion"
book, and I have searched the Microsoft web-site, but I
cannot find the answer to my problem.

I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the
correct direction.

Yours,

Simon May

Hi Simon:

What are the error messages that your are getting? Also, you may want to
take a look at:

I have the Share Permission the Profiles folder set to Everyone - Full
access, Authenticated Users - Full access

Security Permissions are set to Admins - full, Users - Full, System - Full

Make sure you don't user "offline folders" with roaming profiles. Alos, use
My Documents folder redirection so that the My Docs are loaded with the
roaming profile (i.e., takes less time to get to the desktop)

Hi Merv,

Thanks for your reply - there is lots of good stuff there
for me to try. Unfortunately, it is going to be a couple
of days (or more ?) before I get around to getting back to
my client, so I shan't know if your advice has solved the
problem for some time ... I may be posting back !!

Hi Simon, if you continue to have problems with this, I suggest that you
post your issues to the microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs newsgroup, which
is where most discussion of SBS 2003 takes place.

Roaming profiles can be a bit finicky at times, and do not work if you
choose to encrypt the user folders with EFS. I usually stick with local
profiles on SBS networks unless the users really share computers and need
their profiles to follow them. This is a personal preference (do a google
groups search on "sbs 2003 roaming profiles" for the opinions of fellow MVPs
and others on the subject).
If I want to centralize the backup of user profiles, I usually setup a
client-side backup schedule that backs up the profile to a folder on the SBS
server.

Good luck, and post back if you continue to have trouble!
