    - Planning to allow internet access Hello, I've been running my SBS2000 10-user lan for a while now. We have no internet access and only 1 nic. It's time to allow access to the internet so I purchased a SonicWall TZ 170 Firewall with 25 ports. Can I plug my ADSL modem into the WAN socket of this firewall and plug my users into the other ports and let it do all the work or do I need to add a second nic and use the SBS firewall as well?     - veritas backup upgrade problems Hi, I hope someone can help me out with the following; I've recently upgraded a client from Veritas Backup Exec from 8.6 to 9.1. The upgrade was successful, i.e no errors reported, but for some reason the system is still showing as version 8.6. Has anyone come across this before? If so, is there a solution?     - DNS Problem SBS2003 Hi All Have just installed SBS2003 on to a new server, and are having problems DNS. Basically setup is a classic 2xNIC's with DSL router and DNS set to point the server IP on both NIC's. In this configuration there is no resolution of any external addresses, if however I change the external NIC DNS to point to the router things seem to work fine.     - Setting up VPN using ISA and Netgear FVS318 Our current configuration consists of SBS2000, using ISA to connect to the Internet over ADSL. I now have a Netgear FVS318 VPN firewall, which I would like to install. What I want to achieve is to continue using ISA, but have it then forward trafffic through the Netgear hardware to the Internet. I am then going to configure another FVS318 at a different site to set-up a VPN between the two sites.     - Exchange Outgoing Mail Que Help, I have noticed that there is a lot of mail in numerous queues on our SBS2003 server. How can I delete all teh ougoing mail without having to go into each individual queue, finding the messages then selecting them then deleting. There are 395 queues (99% of the messages are NDR's) I have tried looking in Program Files\exchsrvr\maillroot\vsi 1\queues but there is nothing there.     - SBS 2K Crash Hi all, I am hoping you guys can help me resolve a problem? Recently on our network SBS2k server 25 users win2k/Office2k) we had a power outage, the ups behaved correctly and shut the server down gracefully, however, when power was restored we found a drive in our raid had died and the raid was rebuilding onto our hot swap ready spare - fine so far, however then the power went out again durimg the rebuild - result no raid. Anyway we have now rebuilt the raid and restored the data, hower the public store will not load/mount inconsitencies reported, MS say hi risk to repair whilst on a live server, so, we rename it for later & create a new one & mount it fine so far, everything appears to be ok now, except for one area, shared calendars, if you try & create a meeting & invite people, no one can see free/busy info for anyone, this is driving my boss up the wall, Anyone have any suggestions as to where to start?     - Static Routes in VPN Hi all I am trying to add a static route on a vpn so that the two servers will talk nicely to each other but when i tey and enter the static ip, i get an error The Network mask entered is not valid. The destination address cannot be more specfic than the network mask. The IP i am entering is 192.168.100.1 and the network mask is 255.255.255.0 That is what my lan NIC is set at so why does it not work?     - SBS2K - SBS2K inter-site VPN - any pointers? Hi all, We're currently looking into deploying a site-site VPN between our company and our sister company. Both sites are running SBS2K. Both sites connecting to Broadband using 2 NIC approach and external Broadband Routers that support VPN connection. At present, remote VPN to each site is carried out over the Internet with the PPTP port being forwarded to the external NIC on each Server. What we were thinking [theoretically] to achieve is to have the 2 Routers VPN directly to each other, creating in effect a permanent tunnel. Then the 2 SBS boxes to do likewise through this tunnel. We did previously try simply VPN'ing from one Server to another but although initial connection was made this dropped after about a minute in each instance. Reasoning behind the approach is that we need to have a reliable, automated backup at Site A of the accounts data from Site B. We'd actually like to access this real-time but across a 512k link this isn't really quick enough [we've tried!]. So, making the best of it, we're hoping to put a VPN in place, automate either a directory copy or synchronisation during the night and then the following day we have access to the data that's up to date from the previous night.     - Gigabit ethernet advice Hi, We are running SBS2000 with around 40 Windows 2000 Pro clients. A particular user uses two workstations (or clients) - one to run a program on that reads a database and the other machine contains the database files. As we are using 100Mbps network through 3COM OfficeConnect switches, I thought it may be a good idea to have a Gigabit link (peer- to-peer) between both machines for data transfer and fast data reads. I have bought D-Link Gigabit NICs and a Gigabit switch with CAT6 leads - installed them on both machines, so each of the two machines now have 2 NICs - one for the SBS network running at 100MBps and the other Gigabit peer-to- peer running through a switch at 1Gig. I can see through the "show status on task bar" - (the two small tvs) that the link is 1Gig. Question is - how do I test that data is going through the 1Gig NICs and switch? Do I disable the SBS LAN NIC? I don't want to do that as the user constantly looks at Exchange via Outlook2002 client. I need help on this please. Skc Tag: Roaming Profiles Tag: 158809

    - Question on 12GB partitioned Hard Drive, SBS2k I've looked this up and had some questions. Received a new Dell server two weeks ago with SBS preinstalled. Added 10 users. Dell installed the C partition with 12 Gigs only. Veritas 9.1 backup running. Symantec Antivirus running. Clients using POP3 mail only for now. A question. I 've noticed this in the last week. The free space on the c drive is going down by about 200 megs a day. I looked at my Exchange folder C:\program files\ and it has remained the same. I am going to look at every directory. The C drive is pretty basic. My swap file is on a separate partition. Since I got the drive and set it up, the drive has remained constant at free space at 4.23 gigs. On 5/2204, exchange server directory is 1.07gb in size, 4.27gb space available on the entire c drive 5/23/04, exchange server directory is the same, 4.25gb available on the entire c drive 5/24/04, exchange server directory is the same, 4.23gb available on the entire c drive What files should I be looking at? What is growing on my HD by 200 megs a day? I'll do a directory by directory search but was looking to see how I can prevent this.     - Member Servers I've been doing some searching on member servers and I haven't found an article that really tells me what I want to know. These questions are a bit scattered, so I do apologize up front for that. 1. I have the server installed and added to the domain, but when I try to log on with a domain account, it sits endlessly at the "Loading your personal settings." page. Am I missing something about permissions? All I've done is add the server to the domain, nothing else. Did I miss something? 2. I think I installed all sorts of things a member server that isn't going to be a BDC shouldn't have: DHCP, SMTP, and a few others I had to beat down (disable in services) to get the server to boot without errors. What are the core components one should install for a member server that will be a file.print/application server? 3. Since this is meant to be soley a member server, should Active Directory be installed? How do I get the permission groups from my SBS2000 to apply on this server? 4. Should the member server have the firewall client installed or just point it to the SBS2000 for the gateway? I hope to run SUS on this member server, so it needs to get to the internet.     - Defragging Recommendations Well, I've avoided this since we went live with SBS 2k in April 2003 :) I need to defrag our primary partition and our "data" partition. Questions: 1. on the partition that has exchange2k...is defrag smart enough to not screw with exchange? 1a. would it be better to "move" exchange files to another partition, reorg the original partition, and then move exchange back? 2. before I defrag should i stop exchange services? 3. should i disable anti-virus before defragging? any other services? 4. on the primary partition i'm petrified some critical system file will be corrupted. what definitive backup should i do prior to defragging to ensure recoverability? (we use Veritas Backup Exec 9.x). 5. would you all only do the defrag during non-peak times? 6. I have a raid-5 setup with 3 x 36GB drives.     - Really need help and not getting any replies Hello Dana. I finally got some information. It looks like the VPN connection is still active when this happens. Also, when it happens, we tried pinging three things: The static ip address of the server - Gives 4 replies with nothing lost The static ip address with 3389 on the end of it - Gives bad parameter The servers local nic address 10.0.0.1 - Gives a loss of data The servername - Gives could not find server xxxxx Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.     - Where to get information. I know this is going to sound absolutely ridiculous to most of you, but I have to ask. How are you supposed to navigate Microsoft's web site? I try going to Microsoft.com and using their search feature as if I'm Googling and quite frankly if Microsoft thinks they are going to contend in the search engine business they better start working harder. From the main search bar I can use quotes, but and subsequent searches using quotes will fail every time. Remove the quotes from the second search and all sorts of stuff pops up, but hardly any of it specific to my search. So back to the question, how do most of you navigate it? Do you bookmark into specific sections? Navigate through the side panes? It drives me nuts to have to go to the Microsoft site because its unbearable to find anything there. I mean, its all there, but how on earth you find it is beyond me.... This all stems from looking for information on how to add a member server using best practices.     - Connecting Remote Sites via VPN Hi All I am about to attempt connecting a remote site for the first time! I have SBS 2000 at the main office and Server 2003 at the remote site. I have the Microsoft White Paper on deploying router to router VPN's but it's confusing! Which server should I use as the calling server and which one as the answering server? When I get the servers connected, I should be able to plug a laptop in at the remote site and it will log onto the main server? is that correct? Are there any other settings I should know about or have to change? I will be using a hardware firewall at the remote site which I know I will have to configure, any suggestions as to which one to use? So many questions????     - Domain Problems We are expreincing some strange occurances on our SBS2K server. Its seem that the domain controller goes missing. The event log shows MSex. error9175. The server has SP1a installed I tried reinstalling this and I got an error that this was a pre windows 2000 server. The AD is unavaileable if I try to connect to the domain I receive a similar message cannot connect to a pre W2K domain. Rebooting the server clears the problem for a period of time.     - Network traffic monitoring We are experiencing intermittent poor voice quality on VOIP phone traffic over a 10mb link between two sites, and I'm guessing it is due to data traffic on the same line. There is one SBS server at one end, and there are just a couple of client PCs at the other end (so no need for a 2nd server just yet) Any ideas what would be a good (free/cheap) softwate package to use to try to work out where the bottleneck is?     - smtp connector query Hi, in my sbs 2000 setup i need to route 2 email address's (local) to a different relay (smart host). I have added another connector, and set it to reject all messages apart from the 2 email addresses that i require (from local domain). i have also denied the 2 addresses from using the default SBS SMTP connector. When testing, watching the smtp queues, i see only the default SBS smtp connector queue and not the newly created connector queue - is this right?     - Connectcomputer Private error Part 1 I am trying to join a SBS2003 Domain using connectcomputer URL on the server. It asks for a login which is fine and then the user names come up which is normal. I assign a local user to the new user, which is great, but when I hit next an error comes up saying " The following user settings are private - User1" It proceeds to explain to tell you in Sharing And Security untick the Private box. I do not have a single Sharing and Security Tab (under My Computer->Properties) but a separate Security and a separate sharing where I find no reference to Private.     - installing ISA on SBS2000 OEM Hello, I've installed SBS2000 OEM without ISA server few months ago. Now I'd like to add ISA Server, but when I try to install it from the SBS CD # 2 , ISA Setup asks me for a 10-digit serial number. Is it possible to install it without troubles? I tried to run SBS setup from SBS2000 CD #1, but I had strange feeling like it wanted to format my server's hard disk. Please help me how to install ISA on already installed SBS2000 OEM.     - VPN with 2 SBS server sites. Hi, I have a quick ? that I hope is just something simple I hope. I have a sbs2000 server I am administering at the office and then I have one at my home which I have setup but I cannot get the VPN between the two to work. What is the best why to do this. They both have ISA server using a dual nic setup. I can login from a normal workstation anywhere so I know the vpn works at the office. As far as checks.     - Can't mount a restored information store Hi Folks Hope you can help. Following a disk catastrophy at the weekend, I have been trying to restore an Exchange Server 2K backup. For reasons too painful to go into, I only have access to an old back up (over a month ago). I have restored this to a new disk but I cannot pursuade Exchange to mount it. It fails with the error message 'An internal processing error...... ID No c1041724'. According to the MS KB, this is typically a problem with inconsistencies between the databases and the log file. I have followed the advice in KB article 301438. When I try to re-backup the database, MS Backup gives an error the significant bit of which is: "backup started on 24/05/2004 at 17:00. WARNING: Portions of "\Private Information Store (CUREE01)" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete. This file will not restore correctly. WARNING: Portions of "\Public Information Store (CUREE01)" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete. This file will not restore correctly. WARNING: Portions of "\Log Files" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete. This file will not restore correctly. Backup completed on 24/05/2004 at 17:00. Directories: 4 Files: 0 Bytes: 0 Time: 1 second" However, when I run eseutil /mh on the stores, I get no errors and it completes in 2 seconds. Eseutil /p on the log file also completes without error. But if I delete the log files and try again to mount the stores, the error is the same and another E00.log file (about 5 MB) is created along with an E00.chk and a res1.log and res2.log file. Is there anything I can do to get this store into a useable state? I have a major disaster on my hands if not! I am particularly concerned about things like the additional SBS2k CALs which are on floppy. Nothing from the old machine will be used in the new one, with the exception of the software licenses. I had a quick look around smallbizserver.net and although there is a guide for 2003, it didn't cover the issues I was looking for. Searching support.microsoft.com didn't really help, either.     - IMAP versus Microsoft Exchange Server Account ??? differnece.. I'm a little confused about the difference between a "IMAP" account and a "Microsoft Exchange Server" account. What is the big difference? My question is: Does IMAP leaves you're emails on the server? I have configured a client with the type="Microsoft Exchange Server" and i see that the mail are kept on the server. he always syncronize the messages. Thats ok, understand that But with imap, also configured it, i don't see a syncronization.... they say is downloads personal folders that are shared. But does you're emails stays in the personal folders or do you download them on you'r epc without leaving it on you're pc but still access to a public folder?     - Migrating Exchange 2000 I setup a replacement SBS 2000 server and had the following issues. I had a problem with space when I imported the exchange data using the migration wiz. I then had to move the databases and log files. Then when I migrated exchange on to the new server on there were errors logged for every calendar event that was scheduled in each users calendar. I have to replace a SBS2000 server with new hardware.
The new server is ready to go on the network but when I
added the new server and took off the old one the users
desktop settings were lost.

Everything else is fine but I need to be able to retain
the desktop settings and then implement roaming profiles.

How can I do this?

Hi Marc,

I copied the profiles of five of the users as they are
they only ones that have roaming profiles however I need
to setup roaming profiles for all other users and I have
to use their local profiles from their current desktop.
