We have just bought a new RAID server to replace our existing IDE SBS
2000 server and so far i've managed to replicate the Active Directory
info to a temporary Windows 2000 server, taken it offline, and
replicated it to our new server using the exact same machine name.

I've managed to seize the FSMO roles and can get an existing workstation
to log on to both the old and new servers, but i'm having problems
installing Exchange 2000 back on to the new server.

On running the installation file from the third SBS CD, i initially got
the error message:-

The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services"
cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:
A server object for this server ("SERVERNAME") already exists in the
Administrative Group "first administrative group". You must either
remove this server object before installing, or run setup with the
"DisasterRecovery" switch if you are attempting to recover this server.

On looking at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298068
, i've attempted to run the setup.exe /disasterrecovery command, but i
get this error instead:-

Please use the Exchange Administration Snap-in to ensure you have a
valid Exchange Server Object for this server for which you are running
Setup in recovery mode.

Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks in advance

Dan Williams.

Hi Dan,

Install the Windows 2000 Support Tools on the new machine. Then open the
configuration container on the same for your forest. Drill down to the
following container:

Configuration/Services/Microsoft Exchange/ <<Your Organization>>/
Administrative Groups/<<Your Administrative Group>>/Servers/

Do you see your Exchange server listed there?

If not, there's your problem with running the /disasterecovery switch since
it's looking for that object.

Thanks,
Colby

Checked that, and it does appear. Thanks for the advice.

It looks like i just needed to select to 'Disaster Recover' the correct
Exchange files. The default selection is just the top Microsoft Exchange
2000 group. On running disaster recovery with just that selected, i got the
problem mention above. Once i selected to recover the 'Microsoft Exchange
Messaging and Collaboration Services' and 'System Management Tools', it
still came up with the warning/error, but did manage to succesfully install
all the necessary components.

I then installed the same Exchange service packs as my original server had,
and hey presto, it works with the restored EDB & STM databases.
