    - Replace SBS 2000 with Windows Server 2003 We have a SBS 2000 domain controller and want to replace it with a new Windows 2003 Server. Can we upgrade our 50 SBS2k licenses to our new server or do we need to buy new 2003 licenses? Also, would we be able to configure our new 2003 server in our existing 2000 domain to get all the Active Directory settings, Exchange mailboxes, etc. and then demote our SBS to a member server?     - upgrade question I'm close to migrating from a SBS2000 domain to a full Windows 2003. I have had Exchange 2003 and SQL 2000 running on different boxes for awhile now. I use a Cisco PIX as my firewall. I don't want to go to SBS2003. After moving some final data/components off of the SBS2000 machine/domain controller - and a few other tasks - I need to retire the SBS2000 machine. My plan is the following and I have a few questions that I'd appreciate any help with: 1) Remove an existing Windows 2000 DC from the network - as a "DC in the closet" fallback option 2) Install a Windows 2003 machine and promote it to a DC in the SBS 2000 domain. Also setup DNS on this machine and make it a GC. 3) Shutdown the SBS2000 machine and use ntdsutil to seize all FSMO roles to the Windows 2003 DC. Q: Would this be the recommended method for getting rid of the SBS2000 machine? Q: Should I dcpromo it then shut it down (if it even can be dcpromo'd) or just shut it down and remove it from the network? 4) Use ntdsutil to clean up metadata that refers to the former SBS2000 machine. Remove references to the old server from DNS. Q: What would be the best method for doing the DNS cleanup? * After the above steps I hope to have the same domain but with the SBS2000 box removed and the domain now running as a full Windows 2003 domain.     - cannot log into computer, exchange down, dns issues Hi, We are experiencing some major problems with our sbs2k server: After typing in the domain admin user/pass at the login prompt, the prompt disappears leaving a light blue screen. The computer stays at this screen and will remain unresponsive until the power is switched off manually. Before turning it off, we are able to access the shared folders on it (although slow), terminal server sessions open, but remain black (dead) and backup jobs will run, although they will not fully complete. Exchange is down. After the server is turned back on, it runs normally again, until the issue recurs, which is usually the following morning. While the computer is running, I have been examining the event logs and I have discovered the following: at seemingly random times, we get three instances of DNS error event id 4004, and 5 minutes later, followed by recurring instances of DNS error event id 4000, every 5 minutes. The three instances of event 4004 relate to "enumeration of zone ..", "enumeration of zone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa", "enumeration of zone <ourdomain>.local". Event Type: Error Event Source: DNS Event Category: None Event ID: 4004 Date: 11/01/2006 Time: 7:20:52 AM User: N/A Computer: JSRSBS01 Description: The DNS server was unable to complete directory service enumeration of zone .. We have verified and re-verified our DNS settings, and tried every solution we could find. We even performed an authoritative restore on AD on the sbs2k server and a non-authoritative restore on the file server.     - Exchange Update - KB894689, fails Hi, SBS 2000, up to date bar the Subj KB (Exchange 2000 SP whatever (3 I think)). I installed via Microsoft Update initially. The Exchange update failed w' the following message: store.exe EntryPoint Not Found The procedure entry point FSetCallTracingCallbacks could not be located in the dynamic link library EXOSAL.DLL I used stopped IIS Admin and then removed the KB via Add/Remove Programs. Rebooted. Downloaded the update manually. Stopped IIS Admin and Exchange System Attendant. Re-applied the update. No error message this time until I rebooted, whereupon I got the same error. I have removed the update now - and all is well - bar I don't have the Exchange critical update installed - which is of some concern. This is all on my testbed machine.     - Internet Mail Lost Hi, Sorry I first sent this message to the Exchange User Group with no response. Please help. I had to restore Active Directory on my client's SBS 2000 server. Now all Internet mail being sent or received is being lost. There are no errors messages in the event log or in users e-mail boxes. I have reviewed all the connectors and they appear to be okay.     - SBS/Exchange 2000 managing multiple domains Using the SBS 2000 pop3 collector with Exchange 2000. Have a default policy which states: (mailnickname=*) SMTP @domain3.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain3.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain1.co.uk (type=checked, primary, (responsible for all)) SMTP @domain1.local (type=checked, (responsible for all)) X400 c=GB;a= ;p=DOMAIN1;o=Exchange; The pop3 collector collects mail for all the .co.uk addresses no problem. Certain users have domain1.co.uk some have domain2.co.uk others domain3.co.uk and a few have multiples. It seems like pg.co.uk and pl.co.uk are simply being lost. The pop3 collector collects but the mail does not appear in the mailbox. i.e. i get mail to my domain1.co.uk but not domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk It did all use to work when the SBS server's IP was allowed to relay. However this caused Exchange to resend (well try to resend) incoming mail to other external recipients like the pop3 catch all bug. I'm certainly going to be glad when I can ditch this pop3 collector but its a couple of months away :S I've tried re-adding the domains above, and even checked the type box which I believe is unessecary. Also if sending a mail from internal to a valid address at domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk the exchange server delivers it. If sent to an invalid address at those domains the exchange server pushes it out to our host's smtp server which then bounces back an ndr (as there is no such pop3 box). Solutions?     - SBS 2000 Trashed For some reason, my SBS 2000 server is in bad shape. I cannot do an upgrade to SP4 I cant do an Windows update from the web. I am going to put SBS2003 on a new box, but my question is: what would happen if I installed Windows 2000 Server over the SBS 2000, just so I could do a migration. I have a legit copy of Windows 2000 server so that would not be an issue. What happens to the other elements in SBS like Exchang, IIS and SQL. Any assitance would be appreciated.     - Server Crash Help! I have a client who's SBS 2000 server lost 2 drives in their array. Server was configured with only the "C: drive" and 3 disks in a Raid 5. Question is this: They do not have the media onsite any longer, but they do have SBS 2003. Is it possible to go ahead and install the updated version of the SBS software and still recover and restore the Exchange Information Store to the newer version of the software?     - KB887624 & KB909544 I need to install these two updates, more particularly the first since its in the URGENT list on windows update, but every time I try to install they fail. So I tried downloading from the download site and installing myself (not through WSUS) and no luck, anyone else had this problem, or is there a way to clear the cash of downloads and let it download again. Becasue it seems as though its already been downloaded on the server since the attempt to download takes no more than a second then it says FAILED. Please help. THanks in advance.     - POP3 mailbox not accepting updated passwords I have a user whose computer crashed and they've now been updated from W2K Pro to XP Pro. (That in itself was a nightmare but we'll leave that for another day). The user name has also been changed from firstnamesurname to firstname for this particular user. The user is able to logon to the network on the XP machine with firstname/password without problem. When the user tries to poll his mailbox, it is rejected as bad user/password. I've telnetted to the pop3 server and tried to logon using his name and password and receive the same result. I'm stuck as to what to do. The user has mails arriving as we speak and cannot access them. I was under the understanding that changing the password (reset password on user in Acive Directory) also changed the pop3 logon passwords. If it does (or is supposed to) it isn't happening.     - back office to Small Business server I have a question, I recently "inherited" a server with dual P3 450MHz processors and about 2GB of memory.     - TS licensing services - where to install? I am running a sbs2k server with ~15 users connecting. I also have a win2k3 server that I am setting up as a application mode terminal server. I don't know where to install the Terminal Server Licensing component - should it be on the sbs server or on the win2k3 server? Microsoft says in (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2000/maintain/termsvcs.mspx) that, "Make sure the Terminal Services Licensing Services is enabled on the Small Business Server 2000 and that all necessary license tokens are installed," and that," [on the ts server]Select Terminal Services. Do not select Terminal Services Licensing (this will run on the Small Business Server 2000)." _However_ this was written for a setup with a sbs2k server and an older win2k server (not a win2k3 server).     - POP3 not recognising new password Power user managed to crash and burn the W2k machine he was using. installed XP Pro sp2 onto the machine as a new install and reloaded all the progs so he could keep his data. I've changed the logon name for this user from firstnamesurname to firstname. I've reset the password and he can logon to the domain with no problem from his machine and remotely via VPN. However.... He cannot access his mailbox. POP3 produces the "unknown user/bad password" routine. Even telnetting to the server and explicitly entering his new logon and password fails to gain access. I have two questions: 1) why isn't pop3 recognising the new password? (I've restarted all exchange services) 2) If I have to create a new box for him, how do I get the messages already in his box transferred to the new box?     - Single Exchange 2000 Mailbox Recovery We fired an employee yesterday. She wasn't happy. This morning we figured out that between her firing and being walked out the door, management had to rework the termination letter. During that few minutes she went to her desk to clean it out. Unbeknowst to us, she also deleted 200MB of her emails -- some of which were important (I know: we should have locked her out before the termination). I have full information store backups (veritas 9.1) from 7:05 am and from 12:45 pm yesterday (she was terminated at 4:30PM), so I have the data. Unfortunately, all our Exchange backups are FULL store backups, not mailbox level. For reasons too complex to go into, we immediately delete 'deleted' emails, so overnight Exchange maintenance wiped the emails and online-defrag cleaned up pretty good :) Does anyone know an easy way to recover this ex-employee's emails to her email account (or a .pst?) without having to recover the entire info store?     - WMI ADAP error When I run winmgmt /regserver (to solve another problem) I get the following errors logged. I am not sure what this is since I dont have SQL standalone databases (ie we run QB Enterprise which uses its own variation of SQL which is QBDBMNGR.exe) In any event I found some articles online that say this memory consumption by sqlsrvr continue to grow until it uses all memory on the server up, at it also says you can place limits, my question is, HOW do you place the limits.     - Roaming Profiles - or not? Hi, Current setup: SBS2K + W2K clients. Mixed desktops and laptops and users use both laptops and desktops. Currently using roaming profiles for the users, we are having some small problems such as files popping up on the desktop even though they have been deleted (maybe on another machine). I was reading some rather old comments by Jeff on the topic of roaming profiles vs. redirected folders. Are the conclusion still valid, that redirect folders most likely are the way to go (in my situation)? Are there any better alternatives where more "user experience" settings are included in the "mobile profile"? If you recommending me to stick with the roaming profiles (which I otherwise do not have any serious problems with), how do I solve the current problem?     - Exchange reply address I have a client with two offices, both running SBS 2K. Each have been running separate domains for mail. The client would now like to utilize a single domain for email. To that end, I have set up the larger of the two offices with the new preferred domain for mail. At that same office, I have setup users which correspond to users at the smaller office. These users forward to contacts with email addresses that match those of the users at the smaller office, using its original mail domain. All seems to work fairly well, but the client would like the "reply" or "from" on emails sent from clients in the smaller office to match that of the new preferred domain name, rather than the original mail domain for that office. I tried adding the new preferred domain name to recipient policy in the smaller office and making it primary, but not authoritative. That seemed to work for outside email, but the users in the smaller office could not reply to users at the larger office. The emails were rejected because the users could not be found, I assume because the smaller office was looking within itself for those larger office addresses. It has occurred to me to try setting the default email addresses at the individual user level, rather than through recipient policy, but I am not very confident this will do much good.     - Pop3 Collector losing mail? Help! I've got several pop3 accounts being collected by the pop3 collector on SBS2000. Been set up for ages and mail works ok, except if the mail is big it seems. Been sent some 6mb mails, checked the pop3 box through a web interface to see if they are there. Waited for the pop3 collector to collect. Checked the logs which I set to maximum. It said it downloaded the mail and gave it a Message ID. However Trend Scanmail (Client Server Messenging Suite SMB) doesn't show it in its scan logs. And Exchange's Message Tracking Centre doesn't show it no matter how I search. Looked in Badmail and nothing new there, looked in the server.log directory and no mention of the message in the log there. Tried another scenario where there was a small mail and a big mail in the pop3 box at the same time. The big mail did as above, the small mail ended up in my mailbox no problems. Ideas anyone?     - Windows Update KB905915 issues Over the last 2 weeks my SBS 2000 server has been experiencing very erratic behavior. I believe I have narrowed the culprit down to windows update KB905915. I am unsure what triggers the problems to start, but the only way to get things working again is to reboot the server. Once the problems begin, following are the symptoms I notice: 1) Unable to establish new VPN connections. Pre-established VPN connections remain connected and operational. I am able to create a new RDP connection from a workstation to the server. However, when I try to logoff from this remote connection I experience issue #5 detailed below. 2) Unable to use Internet Explorer on server. Screen just hangs with a blank white page. Client workstations can still browse internet OK. 3) Server will not answer any new incoming faxes. On two occasions I noticed the inbox had a fax "in progress". I tried to cancel the fax but then the status just hung at â??deletingâ??. I tried stopping and restarting the Microsoft shared fax service. The service stopped, but then gave the following message when trying to restart: â??Could not start the Microsoft shared fax service on local computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error, or an internal system error.â?? Possibly this is the trigger that causes the server problems to begin. The fax service has a dependency on the RPC service. 4) I use the POP3 mail connector in Exchange to retrieve my e-mail. When the problems occur, no new POP3 mail is retrieved. However no error messages are written to the event logs. 5) When I attempt to logoff or reboot the server to correct the issue, it just hangs at the "saving your settings" window. I have let it sit here for over Â½ hour. The only way to reboot is to push the power button. 6) There are no relevant entries written to any event log indicating what the cause could be. I have now uninstalled this windows update about 4 days ago. Since then the problem has yet to occur again. The fax activity has been very low over the holiday weekend though, so time will tell if the problem is fixed for good. I would like to find out if anybody else has experienced similar issues with this update. Is there any fix available yet to get the update installed without causing a problem?     - Trend SMB 3.0 Issues I have contacted Trend support but do not have an answer yet - wondered if anyone else had similar issues-resolutions. SBS2003-ISA2000. Installed a new copy of SMB3.0. Problem Description : Having lots of issues after installing 3.0 Among issues: (1)Clients are not getting updates from the main server - though it is getting updates. (2)Clients are added through the dashboard - but after installing successfully - they no longer appear under any group. (I think this is why they do not get updates) (3)Cannot reach the ScanMail center at all - Exact Error Message : "Console Session has expired" after putting in a user name and password to reach the scan mail center. Therefore I cannot configure scan mail for attachment blocking and so forth. (4) When I go to the SBS server and try to reach San Mail via start - programs to go to Real Scan Monitor - I get a 127.0.0.1:16372 HTTP 400 error Step Taken So Far : Reinstalled program twice - per Les' guide - I have uninstalled the clients manually, then added them through the dashboard. they then will have the most recent settings - but will not receive them after that. They do NOT have a firewall on the desktops turned on. Any ideas? Also (5)- I have checked all the settings in IIS - but I am having issues from XP desktops getting to the complete dashboard. Windows 2000 clients have no issues. I think there is an issue with latest Sun Java and 3.0 - but have not found reference to this.     - Remove client computer from SBS network I have a need to remove an old Windows 2000 and an old Windows XP client computer from an SBS2000 network and reuse them (for a small charity client) on a small peer to peer network (just the two computers, printer and internet connection). I wish to retain the existing (licenced) software and don't need to reformat them and setup from scratch. I've setup a workgroup so the computer isn't trying to find the SBS server but it seems to have an IP address not on the 255.255.255.0 subnet and therfore can't see the router. Is there something hanging around from the SBS setup / startup that I need to remove to change the computer back to non SBS mode ?     - Can't access internet Joined 2 new computers to an existing domain. They can access everything but the internet. All settings are identical to existing accounts and it doesn't matter who logs on to the domain from these machines, even the domain administrator can not access the internet from these machines, however can access everything else within the domain.     - Adding existing win2000 server to sbs2000 Hi We need to make a win2000+exchange2000 server part of an sbs2000 domain. Both servers have their own users/mailboxes defined but we need all users/mailboxes to be managed by sbs2000 domain. I have two questions; 1. We would like to retain the active directory and other settings on the sbs2000 and only bring users from the win2000 server. Can we upgrade our 50 SBS2k licenses to our new server or do we need to
buy new 2003 licenses?

Also, would we be able to configure our new 2003 server in our existing
2000 domain to get all the Active Directory settings, Exchange
mailboxes, etc. and then demote our SBS to a member server? We want to
continue using it just as a file server.

Hi Dan,

Check out the upgrade to SBS 2003 which has a maximum of 75 user/device
CAL's. You can get upgrade CAL's for the 50 you have.
You can't demote the SBS 2000 server. You would need to flatten it and
install it with plain W2k3 server media.

If we were to install Windows 2003 Server in our SBS2k domain, would we
have any problems removing our SBS2k server from our domain so that we
could reinstall it with Windows 2003 or 2000 server?
