    - OWA has stopped working :( OWA with SSL was working perfect up until yesterday.     - Help - VPN's disconnecting Can anybody help please. We are setting up SBS and are having problems (I bet that is a surprise). When we VPN into the server from remote locations we get 'disconnected' after varying amounts of time. We were testing 3 different laptops: 1 using a telephone line, and the other 2 from another office behind a simple router. We 'usually' get in ok (why not every time?), but then the laptops seem to get disconnected (from the VPN only) after varying times of between 2 and 15 minutes. Any ideas ?     - User rights and login script SBS Hello, On NT4, Win2000 and XP I have encountered the same problem. I don't want users on workstations to have local admin. rights but when I change the rights to power user. Every next time they login they get a message when the login script is run about not being a member of the admin group.     - POP3 Connector Problem Hello all, We use Earthlink for our incoming email and another ISP for our ISDN connection. I am using the ISDN ISP to send email which does not require outgoing authentication. The problem is, I must set up each users computer to send and receive Internet email at each individual workstation. I know that this can be done all at the server but I cant get it to work. I set up the pop3 connector to handle all of the email and all it will do is receive mail. Could someone please walk me through the steps to this up. All SP's and updates are current.     - New errors happening, sort of related Hello, Have two clients, two sbs servers. identical Dells, two companies in one building, different networks. On both servers, one up for about 6 months, the other up for three months, I am seeing the following errors in the event logs on all the clients. All XP PRO Service Pack 1 PC on Server1. A mixture of Win2k/XP Pro PCS on server two. Event Id 1003 DHCP Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the network card with network address....... The following error occurred: The Semaphone timeout period has expired. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address DHCP server.     - SBS 2k - ISA I dont normally install ISA as SBS install however I have done it twice now and both times ISA behaves differently to a standard version of ISA. The issue I am having is ISA appears to work fine ports are locked users cannot access certain protocols etc etc however the users can get internet access without a proxy configuration in their IE setup. The usual configuration of servername:8080 does not work. Whenever I have done this normally i have always had to use a proxyserver:portname in IE on the clients ? is this something different with an SBS build ? do I need to care about it seeing that its working anyway ? oh server is dual homed direct into a router and the other to a switch.     - FileReplicaConn error in event viewer Today I began receiving an error in the Application Event log. The heading says PerfLib. The message is: "The open procedure for service "FileReplicaConn" in DLL "C:\WINNT\system32\NTFRSPRF.dll" failed. Peformance data for this service will not be available.     - DHCP client error Dear all, Thanks for your time first here. I got problem on my DHCP client computer. I can ping ther DHCP server by name and IP. The dynamic IP I got from the server also seems alright to me. But the problem is that I can not get on public internet. However, one of the computer in the same DHCP network can actually access to the internet..... I tried a lot of thing, such as ipconfig /release, renew.... I feel like that the DHCP server blocks the DHCP client to the internet, but I am really not sure and stocked. Please give me a clue if anyone knows anything. Thanks a lot.     - Naming sender in shared mailbox At a clients site I have setup two users (husband and wife owners) with their mail being sent to the same mailbox. I originally set up each user with their own mailbox and now mail to the husband is being forwarded to the wife and not being retained in his mailbox. All the mail is being delivered to the wife's mailbox ok and when you look at the message it says who the message was sent to, but when she replies to a message that has been sent to the husband the outgoing message says it was sent by her and I would like it to say it was sent by him.     - Changed ISP / Exchange not OK I recently changed ISP. Thus I received a NEW IP-address. The SBS contains 2 nic's I use the "mariette knap" methode. 1 internal / 1 external Exchange uses DNS and smtp to handle it's mail. I reran the Internet Connection wizard. and set both new DNS entries and the routers IP-address (routed subnet) I can send mail but do NOT receive mail The provider says DNS (public) has been changed The webserver is functional (both with IP-address and DNS name (www.mydomain.com) What can be wrong?     - VPN reposted G'Day I can connect via a Draytek 2600 Router remotely via VPN & run RDP to SBS if I remove bitmap caching. I cannot run RDP on the W2K Terminal Server remotely. RDP runs OK in-house on all the workstations. I can ping the Terminal server & SBS by ip address & name once connected remotely to SBS. Could this be an ISP bandwidth problem.     - Restoring SBS2K from Scratch We had a system crash and we are trying to get it back up. Backup was ran using BackupExec 8.6 SBS edition. First problem is the version of SBS that we are working with does not allow parallel install (no option during setup to pick WinNT directory). Then after we get the systme up and running, all ok at this point. We try to restore AD and and then all hell breaks loose. We lose all the drivers for NICs (called MS on this one and ended up worse than before I called them). We also can't get the Exchange to restore, keep getting error that the restore loses connection or something. I know there are a lot of issue with restoring SBS, but it has to be recoverable. Any links to how to get this thing back up and running would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, called Veritas and they say everything should be working....     - Auto-disconnect failing I have an SBS2K SP3 server setup with ISA and a dial-up connection to the Internet via a modem. The dial-up is set to disconnect after 1 minute inactivity. This is failing and the modem is staying connected. It was working originally and has now stopped for some reason. No new apps have been loaded and there are no errors in event viewer. I have checked for viruses and ad programs and none are running. I have applied the blaster and nachi updates in case of those issues and have tested the server in isolation in case it was a workstation causing traffic. WHat I notice is that when the dial-up is monitored using the systray icon every 30 secs or so there appears to be a few packets, this must be the server as there were no workstations running. Hi All With reference to the post down below, seeing as Exch2000 log files are in the main program directory, not the M drive, does that mean that the "Exchsrvr " install directory should be excluded from an a/v scan ? We don't use Norton, we use norman & had to exclude M drive some time back.     - How to Reinstall SBS IIS Directories I recently installed Windows Small Business Server 2003 and REALLY like the improvements over SBS 2000. However, I have somehow trashed the IIS directory structure and cannot access many of the CompanyWeb services. I have tried reinstalling the "Internal Web" from the install disks, but this did not help. Is there a tech article to walk me through a complete IIS SBS 2003 reinstall?     - easy ISA question? I'm running SBS2k. I'm working on trying to limit a packet filter to a specific range of external computers - not just one IP... (It works correctly right now with the "All remote computers" option, but I want to limit the remote access for security reasons)... So, after the packet filter is set up, if I choose properties on the Remote Computer tab, there is an option "This range of computers". Since my user has a dynamic IP - but it is always an IP within a certain range, can I setup a subnet/mask to only allow computers from her IP range? How do I do that? I'm not 100% how subnet and mask relate - I guess I expected the choice to be more of a range like 24.x.x.x to 24.y.y.y or something like that...     - Unknown virus/trojan attack Hello all: I think that one of our XP workstations has been compromised with some sort of backdoor / trojan control that is NOT being detected by Symantec AVCE v 8.0 with the most current LiveUpdate defs. When users login, I can see a window titled "update" that starts up in the bottom taskbar next to the start button. If I click on it, I can freeze it for a few seconds, and one time I was able to read additional windows titled with expletives, etc. I have physically removed this machine from the network until it can be fixed. I have looked for unknown programs in the registry key Run, but I don't see anything unusual. This machine did have a virus named Hacktool that was quarantined by SAVCE. I'm wondering if its payload was deployed, but the tool is so new that it hasn't been identified as of yet. Any suggestions?     - Unable to connect to via Termial Services Our SBS 2000 server was down for 2 days due to a crash caused by a = virus. It has been brought back to life and cleaned of viruses.=20 The issue now is that I try to connect via Terminal Services, I receive = this message: "Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconncted.     - OWA slow Hi, when external users try to access OWA across the Internet via a VPN or directly into the server using http://server_ip/exchange they find while its quick to prompt for login credentials the actual page takes a while to load. On the internal network it works fine. Both sides of the connection are using ADSL. Is there something I need to twaek or configure?     - Cache Problem I have a new SBS2000 installation with 3 XP clients. On two of the clients Internet Explorer seems to stall after about a minute, sometimes longer. Up until this point new and cached pages will be displayed. After this point it appears that only pages in cache can be displayed. Nothing new is downloaded from the Internet.     - Items in Sent Items Folder May Show As Sent When the Items Were Not Delivered I have this problem as in the subject Client is using XP Pro and Outlook 2002. The server is a SBS 2000. the message is sent to an internal receipent (the sender and receipent is in the same domain) it has occurred only once so far.     - Anti-Virus Question We are running Symantec's Corporate Edition on the SBS2000 and all clients, where updates and schedules are tweaked on the server and relayed to all clients. At the moment, two machines on our LAN do not have AV on them, as the users insist that AV slows down their machine...in fact, he showed me a program he ran on a large database file (GB's worth) and it took double the amount of time than it did with no AV running. Although we disabled the Heuristics in Symantec's BloodHound technology etc..., it still made a difference. I am concerned about these two machines running no AV. I want to install a "light" AV so at least I know that the machines are covered but will not interupt or slow down programs being run (data processing!). Can someone help me and tell me what is a good "light" AV product to buy that is easy on processing power. The machines in question are Windows2000, SP4 patched with all updates and Blaster.     - Public Folder has unvisible owner - no access for other users Hi, I'm having problems with my public folders. After a complete SBS 2000 re-install (we had a major server crash last week) I've restored all mailboxes and public folders. The mailbox restore went ok, but all public folders now seem to have owners that do not exist on this new system: instead of a real username, in Outlook it displays 'NT User:S-1-5-21-32906815...' as the folder contact. No matter what I try, I cannot get access to the folders. It appears as though the invisible users have access only. I want to remove these invisible users and replace them by either an administrative user or one of our 'power users', like they were in the past. I've tried replacing the permissions in the Exchange Server Manager, and have 'everyone' having 'all rights', as well in Public Folders as in the Public Folder Tree, but that does not seem to change anything. I've searched Google and this newsgroup and although this question has been asked, I could not find a suitable answer. Can you help?     - RAS No Domain Server could be found I have a new SBS 2000 server. The remote dial up clients could access the previous SBS 4.5 server. The remote system connects and is issued IP address and settings via DHCP correctly (DNS WINS mask). However, the whenever the user name, password and domain are issued the error "no domain server can be found" occurs. I can continue past this and ping the server. I can ping the Internet router (separate) and browse the Internet. The IP, WINS and DNS server addresses are correct. I can access the Exchange Server and send mail (Occasional retry required). If I use an invalid user name then I am advised of that. I have configured the hosts and lmhosts files on the clients with the SBS server IP and domain name details. This problem happens with Windows 98 SE clients and Windows XP Pro (SP1) clients. I have granted RRAS group policy access. I have configured other Windows 2000 SBS RAS servers before. (We have one in our office that I access regularly - I have tested remote client access to our office server without error). We have loaded Windows 2000 SP4. (had error before (SP3) and after) TCPIP only protocol at server or clients. Have released network card protocols on remote client pc network card. Running out of options - any suggestions?     - Client PCs lose their connection to the server Hi, I've been having problems with my SBS2000 setup since downloading Microsoft's upgrades relating to MsBlast. Every so often, my client PCs lose their connection to the server. In Explorer I get a red X across the drive so, for example, when I click on my K drive I get the message "K:\ drive is not accessible. The networkpath was not found". Clicking on the drive letters several times does not get back the connection so I don't think it's the time-out issue I've read about. It's not always every PC on the network that loses the connection but, more often than not, it is. The only way that I seem to be able to get around it is by rebooting all the machines, starting with the server. I haven't noticed that I am doing, or using, anything unusual in the sense that the only thing that has changed over the last few weeks is as a result of the Microsoft upgrade (coincidence?). I'm running SBS2000 with a maximum of four client PCs. The server has one NIC and has the ADSL modem attached. Three of the PCs run Windows 2000 and the fourth runs Windows 98.     - Backup Software Choice Hello I am going to be backing up our SBS server to a DAT or DLT. I am trying to decide on backup software at the best cost. Backupexec is a common one but comes with various add-ons for different functions. A bit complicated. The other I have looked at is Tapeware. They have a product called the Small Business Server Pack. It appears easier and cheaper. Questions. Does anybody have any preferences ? If so why. Is backup software bundled with backup devices these days ? Does the "full" backup / disaster recovery (as indicated with HP drives)....really work, and is it the software that does it ?     - Odd internet connectivity problem What is happening is periodically the internet will go down. The setup is a dual nic to a router as per Merv's excellent instructions. When we make some investigations here is what we find. 1. we can ping the external NIC. (192.168.16.2) 2. We cant ping the router (192.168.16.1) 3. We reboot the router and we have the same problem. 4. we Reboot the server and we can then ping the router and the internet starts to work.     - Report generation problems Hi I am having problems generating regular reports from the ISAS. I follow all the steps in Mr Brelsford's book (re Naughty and Nice reports), and manage to create the report definition OK, but get a failure everytime when it comes to actually generating the report.     - Upgrade SBS 4.5 to SBS2000 on new hardware - Questions I've read the MS document on how to do this, as listed in many replies to this class of question. However, I don't see a method to do this whereby you do not need to remove/join domain on clients. My Client has 50 pcs, and I don't want to remove/join, as well as setup the users profiles on PCs. MY Client has software installed that requires special settings for the users. Creating a new Domain SID would mean that each user gets a new profile on their workstation. This would cause me to have to perform many steps on each PC after moving to SBS2000. I thought that perhaps the following would work: 1) Install Win2K Server as DC on existing domain. 2) Remove SBS 4.5 from network. 3) Install SBS2000 on Win2K server box to keep AD info. or 1) Remove SBS4.5 from network. 2) Install SBS2000 on new server. 3) Use AD Migration tool to migrate data from existing NT BDC. Yes, there is a group policy option to remove shutdown as well as one to add
logoff. Take a look at the Group Policy section on Desktop Settings as well
as in the Computer Configuration under Terminal Services for related
options. The only trick there is the idea that you can still use the
Security option in the Start Menu | Settings to perform an actual shutdown
when desired.
