Hi all,
I have a quick question about remote backup solutions. Management is
waiting to implement a remote backup system and I am trying to determine the
best course of action as I have never looked any remote services before.

Is it better to use a backup provider (ie livevault) or do a remote
consisting of maybe a VPN to VPN site connection to lets a local site (my
house for example) purchase a backup software that is capable of providing
this feature and have a storage at the house.

What kinda prices do those services usally run. With the 2nd solution being
more expensive at first but no monthly charges occur after the setup is
complete.

Just looking for ideas.

Thanks

Eddie

Hi Eddie

How much Data is involved ?

500mb / 1GB there are plenty of providers. However if you want the whole SBS
backup scenario then unles you have a backbone internet connection it will
not be practical. Costs are massive. For a SBS user the ' large data '
solutions are not viable.

Personally I would not like any of my data going to a third party. Also make
sure there are no legal issues. If client was a lawyer / solicitor then
initial response is it is not allowed unless backup provider is authorised
and the data has to be encrypted so very expensive encrytion solution is
required.

Ask yourself the question... if data recovery is required, how long would it
take to download from a web solution?

Hi Eddie,

Remote backup is a great idea but you scare me with the phrase
"Management is
waiting to...". I do hope you don't mean that management is putting off
backup until a good remote backup option is found. A lot of data has
been lost this way. ;)

Well, we currently are using a tape system and are storing each months
archive offsite. I am just trying to pull a 2nd line of defense kinda
thing.

As far as the data there is somewhere around 100-120 gig. I have been
pricing it and it seems close to like 2000 a month for that kinda remote
backup. That is a little too steap for use at the current time and I guess
finding a different solution is the answer. Our internet connection is a T1
but once the data is copied once the amount that changes is not more than a
few 100 meg at the max so I dont think transfering that small amount will be
a problem but of course testing it may be a dif story.

Thanks

Eddie
