Hi all,

I am hoping that someone can help me. I have implemented
SBS W2K and all is well. MS Exchange is currently
configured to collect POP3 mail for our domain and this
also works OK.

We are on an ADSL line with a fixed IP address. There
are an increasing number of users based overseas who need
to access the server for their emails. Although they can
use the Outlook Web Mail interface via a browser window I
am wondering if there may be a better way of letting them
collect their mail straight into their MS Outlook win32
client.

Is there a way of achieving this short of implementing a
VPN, eg: remote users collecting their mail via a POP3
connection to the server (this way they will also receive
internally sent mail as opposed to creating a email
forwarder at the ISP that they could collect from). Any
suggestions or comments on possibilities or best
practices much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Simon

It is technically possible to use exchange as a POP3 server so your users
overseas can download their mail directly from the SBS. You could start by
taking a look at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/exchange2000/maintain/operate/13x2kada.asp
Remember that you will have to create appropiate packet filters in ISA.

However, let me suggest you do something else since you are downloading your
mail via POP3-> Don't download their mail... leave it on the POP3 server...
this way they can download their mail directly from the original POP3
server. As for internal mail... you just have to delete the mailboxes of
those users in SBS and the setup Exchange to "forward all unresolved
recipients to (SMTP) host" and the internal mail will be sent to the
external POP3 server so they can download it from there.

I think #2 is your best approach... (I would prefer VPN, but you are the
boss). :-)

Thank you for help. After reading these articles I think
that the VPN is just going to have to be the way forward
due to the networking connectivity advantage it also
offers.

Thanks again,

Simon
