Honestly have not used MS Small Business Manager nor have any clients
who have it [uh... what does that tell you.....]

Bad - quickbooks doesn't "close" a period so someone can post a
transaction to a prior year if they want to [stick a password on a prior
year].
Good... relatively easy for someone to pick up
Bad - realtively easy for someone to screw it up if they don't know what
they are doing
Good - make sure the reconcile inside the QB.

Like anything.. IMHO it's not the program... it's the operator.

As for SBM, I evaluated it as a possible solution for a family biz - but the
inventory was unbelievably weak for the price of the package. QuickBooks is
ok - but I'm partial to Peachtree (hint - if you're using it for payroll,
you can manually enter your payroll tax formulas if you don't want to spend
the $$$ for the annual tax service)

Microsoft would like to be a player in this market, but they are not yet
there. They are first getting into the market.

The low end accounting market has consolidated on two programs: Quickbooks
and Peachtree.

Quickbooks success is that it is simple. It attempts to hide the accounting
from the user. It is really an outgrowth of Quicken and it based around the
checkbook metaphor. You do not see General Ledger accounting codes nor are
there formal accounting periods. It is really designed for the smaller firm
and must be used by the owner or a VERY trusted employee.

Peachtree is more formal in its approach. It has better security and audit
trails. For example, it allows for batch entry so one person can perform
data entry and a manager can review then post before items "hit the books".
Its built in reports can be customized and it even works with Crystal
Reports.

But that's just my opinion,
I could be wrong!

I almost forgot the reason I posted in the first place :-)

Go to this website and register-
http://www.quickbooksusers.com/.forums/

There's a comparison forum there... you can see comparisons with every
imaginable program there (beware that since this is a QuickBooks forum...
people will be biased). However, I have found that the information there is
very good actually.

In specific there's a thread called: Great Plains Small Business Manager
started on 12-22-2002 on the Comparison Forum. I suggest you start there.

HIH,

Javier

Peachtree if you need a heavy Inventory package
Quickbooks if you don't.
