    - Proxy setting and access to NNTP I have just formatted my server and re-installed SBS 2000 on it. I may be missing on some proxy settings as I am not able to access the following from a client running Windows XP: - ICQ - Yahoo messenger - Windows messenger I have Microsoft Firewall Client running on all the nodes.     - Small Business Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003 Migration I am trying to help someone do a migration from Small Business Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003. I say its a small business server 2000 installation purely due to the fact that they initially installed Windows Server 2000 from the Small Business Server Disk 1. Now, whenever you try to view licensing etc, it indicates that these options are not available on SBS 2000. Firstly, does this mean that its definitely NOT possible to do an upgrade from SBS 2000 to Windows Server 2003? All the posts that I have read indicate that it is not possible to do this upgrade. Hence the long story to follow. We are planning on doing the migration as follows, please could all you experts indicate if we are on the correct track? We currently have 1 main server running Small Business Server 2000, DHCP, Internal DNS for Active Directory and an additional server running Exchange 2000. We plan on taking the following steps to get both servers over to Windows Server 2003: 1. Run adprep on the Small Business Server 2000 GC to prep forest and domain for Windows Server 2003 2. Install Windows Server 2003 on a new temporary machine and run DCPROMO to promote the server to an additional controller for the domain 3. Change the GC role and the FSMO roles to point to the new temporary server 4. Run DCPROMO on the old Small Business Server 2000 to demote it to a member server 5. Shut down the machine 6. Remove the SBS 2000 Server from AD Sites and Services 7. Format the SBS 2000 Server and install Windows Server 2003 on it 8. Run DCPROMO to promote to an additional controller for the domain 9. Take over the GC and FSMO roles 10. Shut down temporary server 11. Remove the temporary server from AD Sites and Services The one thing I am not sure on is that the old server runs DNS and once the machine goes down, then there will be no DNS server running and no way for the AD Controllers to know what is what. Where in these steps do you suggest I move the DNS server to the temporary server and how do I go about doing this? Should I install the dns server on the temporary server before I run DCPROMO on it and then just point the servers dns settings to itself (as we did with the SBS 2000 Server)? After we have done all this and migrated the Small Business Server 2000 Controller to Windows Server 2003,we will then format the Exchange Server 2000 and install Windows Server 2003 with Exchange Server 2003. When we have done this, will mailboxes for all users on the domain be recreated with the installation of Exchange Server 2003? If there is an easier way to do this without buying the SBS Migration pack then please let me know!     - Does Norton Antivirus corporate edition expire? We have Norton Antivirus corporate edition v7.6.... do we NEED to renew / buy it again to (legally?) keep getting the latest antivirus definitions? There's no subscription expiration like in NAV 200x. It keeps working even after the year since it's been installed. If you look at the symantec store's website, it talks of "The Symantec Small Business 5-Packs carry a full year of Upgrade Insurance and only 3 Technical Support Incidents for the year. ". I don't need to upgrade the app - it's running fine on our machines. Unless I am missing something, it doesn't say this comes with 1 year subscription to virus definitions. But I can't see them letting a business off the hook of annual payments while socking individuals?! And so if somewhere in the license or somewhere else it does say you only get 1 year of virus definitions.... then a) how come there's no subscription expiration field and b) it doesn't seem to save you money when you renew - you have to buy the latest version of the program at retail price?     - Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 I ran the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 from the Microsoft/Security site. Unfortunately, since I trust software from Microsoft, I didn't save the replaced files in case I uninstall the service pack. The service pack crashed at the last part, and my SBS is pretty dysfunctional. I attempted to repair, and am now able to bring SBS up, but several integrated applications are dysfunctional. The most disheartening is the loss of Exchange. Since I installed my applications in a separate partition (F Drive) I still have the Exchange Priv1.edb and others so I haven't lost my database. What would be the best way to restore SBS, and expecially Exchange, so I don't lose the SIDs associated with the users in Active Directory and the rest of my settings? Thanks.     - Which Protocols should be running on Internal/External NICs? We used to have 4.5 and the external NIC had only TCP/IP and PPTP running on it. The internal one had only TCP/IP if I recall correctly. Our network is running incredibly slowly on a brand new Dell p600 server. I'm wondering if there are too many protocols to resolve. There was an article for 4.5 that told you how to configure the SBS 4.5 down to the last nook and cranny. Is there a similar one for 2000?     - Startup problems with 2 SBS machines I manage several SBS machines.... I recently changed Internet provider (also for my customers) The new Provider, VERSATEL, offers routed SUBNET. I moved one (2 year old) server. The server used to be connected using NAT and a DMZ on a simple ADSL (VIGOR2200) router. After moving the server, I connected the External NIC to a switch that is connected to the router (arescom 1000) from Versatel. I gave the External Nic it's own IP address (11.22.33.125) and pointed to the gateway (11.22.33.121) DNS is the servers INTERNAL Ipaddress (10.0.0.3) Binding order is checked... (Int first, Ext second, Ras Third) I ran the ICW and set it to PERMANENT INTERNET CONNECTION. So far.............. no problem..... Now If I start the server with the external NIC connected to the switch..... Drive M is NOT created. Exchange and RPC are not started.... numerous error messages in the system LOG file. If I start the server without a connection on the external NIC (cable out) Everything starts like a charm... Even If I connect the cable on the External NIC afterwards... It stays OK. What could be th cause here... Dependencies? If so... how can I change or delay the settings. PLEASE help beacuse in this way it is impossible to remotely service the SBS machines... 2 more strange things. I recently installed a brand new SBS on a similar Internet connection and this SBS has exactly the same problem. BUT it first was also connected using NAT. I also run another SBS... but this one was always connected via a BRIDGE to the Internet but with DHCP but the External NIC's IP address was the public IP address. This one always worked fine. And after some minor DNS problems runs perfectly AGAIN on the same type of Internet Connection as the two others (Versatel, routed Subnet) Could it be that the ICW changes something in the settings when you first use a router and after a permanent connection?     - W2k3 Standard in SBS 2000 Domain Hi, I have an SBS2k server domain running fine. I introduced a w2k3 standard server to it. Joined the domain as a member and all is well. The problem started when I promoted the w2k3 I found the articles on adprep and successfully promoted the w2k3 to a dc of the same domain. Now I can't browse to my wxp- pro computers from my SBS2k server. I also can't browse to my w2k3 server from my sbs2k. I can browse to both servers from any of my workstations and I can browse to any of my workstations from my w2k3 server. Am I doing something that's not possible? My Goal is to setup this exact senero at one of my clients. Load Exchange 2k3 on the new w2k3 server and unload some of the duties of the SBS server. Help would be appreciated.     - dial up networking Hi, apparently you can automate the connection process for any Microsoft client by using a simple batch file and the rasdial command. The rasdial command starts a network connection by using a specified entry. Syntax rasdial connectionname [username [password | *]] [/domain:domain] [/phone:phonenumber] [/callback:callbacknumber] [/phonebook:phonebookpath] [/prefixsuffix] The rasdial command disconnects a network connection by using the following syntax: rasdial [connectionname] /disconnect I have tried the above and i cannot get it to work. Can someone give me an example please? I seem to be getting stuck on the the isp's domain name or the domain name. I do not know what it is asking for here. It fails without a domain name. Hi all I know this subject isn't related to this NG, but I've been getting e-mails which are flooding my box, and I was hoping someone in here would know of a way of stopping them? They all appear to report from either Microsoft Security Division, or MS something, or some mail server resulting in NDR messages. Each e-mail contains an executable or pif attachment of approximately 145kb. A lot of them appear to come from Microsoft themselves, although since they never e-mail patches it obviously isn't!     - rasdial Hi i have found a way to automate dial up networking but am not sure i have created the batch file correctly. Can someone help me please? the batch file contains the following: rasdial dialup username password /phone number. Then i will have to schedule this using scheduled tasks. I need to schedule this because trend micro messaging suite does not dial up and get updates from the internet.     - Continuous Reboot I have a server running Windows NT 4.0 Small Business Server. I went to windowsupdate.com to download and install the most recent updates. The first two went fine - download, install, reboot. The last one downloaded, installed, and then started a continuous reboot cycle. I get through the entire boot sequence to the point where I can press ctrl-alt-del to login. The disk is still spinning. I assume it's finishing the installation of the update. Then - reboot.     - Can't logon to my XP computer I ran windows update on my XP computer, and when I restarted it can no longer connect to my SBS Server. I can't remember my local admin account, and so I am completly locked out of it. It says that my domain server can't be found. My other computers are connecting ok.     - Help: Exchange Problems After Security Patch and MDAC 2.7 SP1 Update I'm running SBS 2000 w/Exchange SP3, ISA 2000 SP1, W2K SP4. I have OWA running over SSL and I had IMAP running over SSL. I installed the MS03-039 security update for the RPC bug and restarted the server, then I installed MDAC 2.7 SP1 and restarted the server. After the restart the Exchange Information Store didn't start up properly (not sure if it came up after the first restart or not). I restarted the service and it came back up. Then I noticed that I could no longer use IMAP externally. I get the following error: "Unable to connect to the server" However, IMAP access still works over SSL when I am logged in to the server. Also, when I try to change my password in OWA I get the following error after entering domain, id, new password, old password: "Error: An invalid Active Directory pathname was passed" This also worked before the two updates were installed. And everything else in OWA appears to be working fine. I've checked all the settings in ISA, and they seem to be exactly as they were before the problems started.     - can this be logged? Hi, I am setting up my new SBS 2000 and was wondering if I can track the time employees login and logout of an SBS network. I would like to verify the time they claim they spent working. Can this be done for remote logins as well? I would like to see if they login over weekend when they claim to do work.     - Client PCs still losing their connection to the server :-( Hi, A few weeks ago I posted a question "Client PCs lose their connection to the server". Marina Roos was kind enough to help :-) and as a result I found the "welchia" virus on the server :-( Everything is now clean. All the latest patches have been downloaded and installed on the server and the clients. My virus software (Trend) is upto date. However, my client PCs are still losing their connections. As soon as one can't connect then I find that the others can't connect either. Everything was fine until I downloaded the first Microsoft patches - it's all gone TU since I installed them. I've swapped NICs between machines (should I buy and install new ones?). FYI, my original post is reproduced below. Does anyone have any ideas. Every so often, my client PCs lose their connection to the server. In Explorer I get a red X across the drive so, for example, when I click on my K drive I get the message "K:\ drive is not accessible. The networkpath was not found". Clicking on the drive letters several times does not get back the connection so I don't think it's the time-out issue I've read about. It's not always every PC on the network that loses the connection but, more often than not, it is. The only way that I seem to be able to get around it is by rebooting all the machines, starting with the server. I haven't noticed that I am doing, or using, anything unusual in the sense that the only thing that has changed over the last few weeks is as a result of the Microsoft upgrade (coincidence?). I'm running SBS2000 with a maximum of four client PCs. The server has one NIC and has the ADSL modem attached. Three of the PCs run Windows 2000 and the fourth runs Windows 98.     - two machines, same problem, Exchange Drive M Suddenly I have two machines with the same problem..... Both machines are COMPLETELY different in hardware. The one machine is NEW (P4, 2,4Ghz 1024mb) IDE on promise4000 Raid1 120GB The other is dual P3 900 1024ECC ScSi 80GB (raid1) Both run SBS2000 Servicepack3 Both run Mcafee AV The last machine already for over 2 years without a hassle.... I just moved the second machine and put it to a new ROUTED SUBNET Internet Access. (it was behind a router with a DMZ) The other one is ALSO on a routed subnet..... I ran the ICW using two NICS. The one nic is connected to a switch for the INTERNAL network, the other directly to the Router. The only checked thing with the second Nic is TCP/IP Binding order is: Internal / External / RAS The external nic's DNS is the servers internal IP-address. The problem on BOTH machines: Exchange, although set to start automatic..... does NOT start Drive M is NOT created. There is a truckload of error messages.. RPC not started (with the older machine) ILS not starting (hangs) Until 20.00 when it was on the old router.... no problem.... restart and run. NOW, on routed subnet.... ONLY trouble...     - can't ping after Routing and Remote Access configuration Trying to setup a 'one-armed' VPN via Microsoft Routing and Remote Access on Small Business Server 2000. After configuring RRAS, my server looses internet connectivity. Can't ping ANYTHING except itself. Needless to say, all Outlook clients obviously freeze and the LAN can't see the server anymore. There is one error message in the Logs about RRAS not being able to contact DHCP, but I assume this is related to the drop in network connectivity.     - Internet explorer blowout on SBS2k All the sudden internet explorer has ceased to be able to get web pages on our sbs2k server IE6 returns the generic 'page cannot be displayed' dns error outlook express gives the error code 0x800CCC0E socket error 10060; a general failed to connect error. dns is fine with ns lookup, both nics can resolve any address i try. We are NOT using the isa proxy. at first this was intermittent, not i can recieve no web pages nor send external email. I can however get local web pages e.g. gateway router. Is there any way to specify which connection IE is using? As far as the firewa/router goes i've looked through the logs and it shows nothing blocked from either ip address. Any help would be much appreciated. just for kicks heres the ipconfig and nslookup info.     - Help needed with my domain Here's my situation. I have SBS2000 with Exchange in a Central office - ROOT DOMAIN. There is another small office that has a W2K Server and 6 users. However, that office is not a domain. The server is logged in locally. The users login to their machine locally, but the server does provide some file and printer sharing that users have access to. My goal is to connect those users to our domain and have them log on our domain back at the central office. So I need to create a Organizational Unit in AD on our root domain.     - baby steps Hi! I think I'm back to taking baby steps again. I have a SBS2k PDC. I have a Win2k Server as member server (print server, terminal server in application mode, file server). We have a Netopia router. I can't get VPN or terminal services to work. Idealistically, I'd like the user to term serv in to the member server with their user rights. My question is this. If I point the router to the member server's ip address for port 3389, how is the login verified with the AD is on the PDC? How can I create client setup disks when the laptop has no floppy drive.     - Log on via VPN Hello, I am trying to figure a way for users at a remote site to log onto a domain via a vpn that goes through a dsl connection to a SBS 2000 server. The remote pc's are obviously not joined to the domain right now, and a user will sit down and click the vpn shortcut after they have logged on locally. I would like them to be able to sit down and log into the domain automatically. I hope this makes sense. I know that you can use a dial-up to connect to a remote network and log into the domain, but I have never set anything up that would use a vpn connection to log in. The reason behind all of this is to be able to monitor things like internet access (or block it altogether), and keep them from being able to tweak the local pc. Any ideas? Thanks! Sorry to repost this but am hoping someone can offer some advice:

Hi guys recently completed a SBS 4.5 in place upgrade to SBS 2000 - it
all seemed to go okay a few little errors along the way but I managed
to get through it - Have one remaining problem when accessing the SBS
console I can see all the pages apart from Tasks

Tasks just gives me a blank page - Wouldn't bother me but it is a
customers machine and so I would like to get it 100%, I've looked
through the postings in the group and found out it is quite a common
error - Anyone got any suggestions on how to resolve it?

Please note i do get a regular message in event viewer regarding a
DCOM server not registering within a certain timeout : event ID
10010

When i look up that DCOM service in the registry it is set to IIADMIN
- this message appears evey couple of minutes and is eventually going
to fill my log files.

Not really sure if two problems are related but thought it best to
give all the info.

Again any help or guidance would be appreciated
