I am running a SBS server 2000 on a an older hardware and hence I want
to move it to a new better server. This is the master domain server in
the network. (I have one mor file server-another domain controller-not
an exchange server-THIS SERVER HAS THE USER PROFILES)
I was thinking to do the follwoing :
1.) build a new server with exact server name, dns etc (only thing
different will be bigger hardrives; raid 5 instead of mirror)
2)Then restore (using disater recovery switch) system state and
Storage group(mailboxes) to the new server from a back from the old
server
3.) Then unplug the old server put in the new server.
USING DISASTER RECOVERY SWITCH, WILL IT DESTROY THE NEW MACHINE???
OR
1.) build a new server with exact server name, dns etc (only thing
different will be bigger hardrives; raid 5 instead of mirror)
2) CREATE ALL USERS EXACTLY IN AD ( I HAVE ONLY 20 USERS) WITH
EXCHANGE MAILBOXES. COPY THE OLD MAILBOXES FROM THE OLD SERVER
3)Then unplug the old server put in the new server, CONNECT ALL
CLIENTS

Will this work?
What are the things I am missing
Detailed help is appreciated.
thanks
sam

I think you should install W2k onto the new machine, give it a slightly
diferent name (SBS2). Then promote to a Domain Controller. This will migrate
users accounts and SID.
Install SBS component onto the new W2k server.
Backup original Server.
Restore only the Data portion. This should restore the security along with
the data files.
Rebuild any login scripts that point to the old server.

You will end up with a new server but with a different name. Should not be
an issue unless your clients ws have manually mapped drives and resources
like printer shares.

Maybe someone else can comment...

Hi Sam,

There are two methods to accomplish what you are trying to do. Please make
sure to do a full backup before starting this process. : )

- Clean installation of SBS 2000 on the new server with the same machine
and domain name (verify server and domain names on the old server). Shut
down Exchange services on the old server and move the MDBData subdirectory
to a file server/client; move the user data to a client (or though backup).
Take old server offline and bring new server up. Recreate users on the
new server and restore Exchange/user data. Drop clients into workgroup and
log clients into the new domain; create new mail profile on clients.

- Use ExMerge to export Exchange data on the old server to PSTs on a file
server/client. If Public Folders exist, on a client machine drag these
into PSTs. Install full Windows 2000 Server on your new machine and
dcpromo the machine up. Once you have verified that the users are present
on the new machine, dcpromo the old server down. This will transfer the
FSMO roles to the new server. Take the old machine offline. Use ExMerge
to import the data back into Exchange. Drag Public Folders back into the
Exchange server if necessary.

Thanks John:
I am trying to preserve the old name of the server too. Because I
recieve emails on them ( I dont want to change the MX records etc at
my ISP)
Is there any way i can keep the old server name in the new server.
I was thinking after migrating users and before Installing SBS
component, I can change the name of the server.
Will this work
thanks again
Sam

SAM,

I have not tried this so that is why I was hoping someone else would be able
to comment.

It looks like Rebecca from Microsoft has left a message. Her method should
work fine except that you will have to visit all NT and above workstations
to rejoin the domain. Your desktop and user settings will be lost in this
case.

I am not sure about renaming the server, since you will have to have Active
Directory up and running in order to have user accounts migrated. Once this
happens I am not sure how difficult it will be to rename?
