How secure are Linksys routers in their default settings?
I have a SBS2K that doesn't have ISA installed (yet) but
the server is behind a Linksys router. I want to go home
tonight and connect remotely (it's Saturday and to make
things worse I need to be here tomorrow), anyway, assuming
the cable modem is going through a LinkSys router am I
safe enough behind this router or should I be concerned?
I've done many SBS installs but never left the server
running behind a Linksys router, I've always had ISA
installed. Would rather not connect tonight remotely than
have someone hack their way in the network. All I did so
far to the router was setup the WAN static IP addresses
and on the server put in the router as the default
gateway. Any and all help is appreciated.

I don't think you will be more/less exposed if you connect to the server
from your home... that has nothing to do with it. However, the way you
configured the Linksys router is the key factor here... a poorly configured
firewall is just as bad as not having anything. In any event... by default
most routers/firewall come closed.

Obviously, you had to do more than what you said to the router in order to
be able to connect remotely... so think about what you did (just forward VPN
port/protocol or you used a DMZ?).

Do a port scan of your server from your house... and check what ports are
open. BTW-> Is your server patched?

As long as you aren't passing any unnecessary ports to the SBS, (eg. - just
TS for tonight), the router's remote admin feature has been disabled, and
you've changed the default password on the router - I think you should be OK
for tonight.

Only open port 3389, I personally wouldn't worry for 1 night, I wouldn't
leave it that way much longer.

Go to grc.com and see if you have any ports open. If they're all closed (or
stealth), you should be OK. And, of course, make sure your SBS is patched
for MSblast and all the other nasties. :-)

Thanks again.
