Hello all,

I have a customer who has decided to replace his SBS2000 server hardware
(the whole box)

I will have the new box completely setup with his existing SBS2000
software in advance, then will 'down' his old box and bring the new box
up in it's place. I will have tape backups of everything before I
start.

His existing AD domain is mycompany.com (Yeah, yeah, I know... his
choice), but I would like his new AD domain to be mycompany.local, *and*
the machine name will change from sbserver to mail.

What is the best way to migrate his Exchange data from the old to the
new box. (I have a week to plan for this)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

pull the mail into PST files either by using exmerge or from Outlook on the
client PCs.

Why the name change? sbsserver seems a much more appropriate name than mail.

I use the 'pst' approach alot, but was wondering if there was a way to
migrate AD so the user/workstation id's wouldn't change.

I like the sbserver name, too, and normally name the sbs servers that
way. He wants something that reflects the primary purpose of the
machine, so he will have (mostly) Exchange on the 'mail' box,
application data on 'data', etc.

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it.

Not if you're going to change the domain name in AD, AFAIK. SBS doesn't
support trusts, so once you build the new box you won't be able to migrate
your AD to it....

FWIW, I usually name servers with company name/unique numbers. I realize
that in an SBS environment you can't really easily migrate roles back/forth
to other boxen, but company01, company02, etc., seem a lot more flexible to
me. Just my $.02.

Particularly if you're trying to do remote support onto the customers
server. Easy to get confused if they're all called 'server' or something. Of
course if the customer insists on something it's sometimes hard to dissuade
them.
