I recently installed SUS, and it seems to be working great. I've been using
it for about two weeks, during which time I have checked several of the
workstations - they're all up to date. Updates that don't require a reboot
are installed in the background. If a reboot is required, the user is
prompted to reboot, but they can wait if they're in the middle of something.
Users with admin rights are prompted to install the updates when they wish.
SUS installs critical updates and service packs. There's a version in beta
that will do Office, Exchange, and I think SQL. However, the whole thing is
so simple that there's really no reason to wait for the next version. As
often as critical updates seem to be getting released, I can't see any
reason to be killing myself with these installs on evenings and weekends.
The only possible downside is that SUS downloads all of the critical updates
and service packs for Windows 2000 and XP - I'm at 633 mb and growing (make
sure you select to download only English language updates unless you need
others).
