Hello,
SBS2K. The reason why I posted this thread in this group is because I am
pretty sure this has been done by most of the users here. I am actually
surprised I have yet to do it. That said, here is what I want to do.
I need to create a shared folder on the server to be used by the 'Public'.
In essence, the folder needs the following characteristics:
1. No one, except for the Administrator can delete the top level Public
folder.
2. Users can create subfolders within the top-level folder.
3. Users can read any files or traverse and folders within the top-level
folder, but the only files they can change or delete are ones they create.
4.Users can add files, but only into a subfolder within the top level Public
folder. They cannot add them directly into the folder. (I am not sure if I
actually want to do this which is why I listed it last)
I am trying to figure out what permissions to place on this folder to
accomplish my goals and have come up with the following:
1. I will create the folder within the Company folder and share it giving
the Everyone group full permissions.
2. In terms of the security permissions, I was going to set them up as
follows:
a. Uncheck allow inheritable permissions to propagate
b. Administrator: Full Control (This folder, subfolder, and files)
c. Everyone: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read (This folder,
subfolder, and files)
d. CREATOR OWNER: Full Control (This folder, subfolder, and files)
I think this should cover the first, second, and third characteristics of
what I need for the public folder, but not the fourth. Is this correct?
Also, is it possible (or even prudent) to try to accomplish number 4? I was
thinking that there maybe characteristics that are standard when
establishing a public folder that I am missing here (not 1-4). If so, what
are they? Maybe its b/c I haven't had enough coffee, but I always seem to
have trouble working with permissions, especially, when they are granular
like this. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks,
Chris
