A problem has suddenly occurred with Outlook across our firm
Many emails will not open with the message in the preview pane -
'This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the preview
pane. Open the item to read its contents."

When trying to open the item a box appears 'Cannot open item'

This is happening to some internal and external emails and some do not have
any attachments. Emails from certain users are the problem with the internal
stuff.

Earlier this morning I restarted the server and this appears to be the start
of the problem. I had not altered any settings. The other day we updated GFI
MailSecurity anti-virus but I can't see that that should cause a problem.

Any clues?

Simon

Hmmm... GFI Mail Security *may* be a suspect here:

Thanks for the suggestion.
The symptoms are certainly the same.
However stopping both GFI mail Security and GFI mail essentials, in the
services control panel, has no effect at all.

Any more clues anyone?

Re: Problem with Outlook - Fixed by Simon

Problem fixed

The problem is with GFI Mail Security.
I have disabled the email exploit engine and Outlook is working as normal.
I can select which of the exploits is causing the problem and disable it. I
will do that later. At the moment everyone can read their emails normally so
everyone is happy again.

The clue was by reading the GFI monitor utility.
