I am having a problem with some of the outgoing e-mails. The users get
the following message returned and the message never gets delivered.

Where would I look to get this problem resolved. I dont know where to
start.

----------------------------------------------------------------
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

alex@mycompany.com on 10/6/2003 10:07 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the
recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<server01.server01.mycompany.local #5.5.0 smtp;553 mail
rejected due to excessive spam (xxx.xx.xxx.x)>
----------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks
Alex

Alex,

This is probably an anti-spam measure... so your best bet is to change the
delivery of mail from using DNS to use a SmartHost (your ISP's SMTP server).
This probably would solve your issue.

Many SPAM filters now do a DNS reverse lookup on your mail server's stated
Fully Qualified Domain Name. I noticed in the transcript of your error that
you are reporting to the world that your mail server is
server01.server01.mycompany.local

Of course the .local is not a real DNS name on the Internet so the
recipients SPAM filter will fail the message when its reverse DNS lookup
fails.

You need to go into the Exchange System Manager and set your Fully Qualifed
Domain Name to your real domain.

Get into Exchange System Manager Servers\<servername>\Protocols\Default
SMTP... Properties\Delivery\Advanced and change the FQDN to your real domain
name.

This should reduce the incidence of bounced messages from external
recipients.

Who?
-Your recipient's mail server. Can't do much about that.

Why (does this happen to you)?
-You are or have been an open relay... thus you are blacklisted.
-Your IP address was previously owned by someone that was blacklisted
-Their server can't do a ReverseDNS lookup from your IP to the domain
-Other
-Some combination of above reasons

What (to do)?
-Test your server for open relay
-Disable the guest account
-Let only autheticated users relay
-Use your ISP's SMTP servers... I think it will save you a ton of trouble.

If you still have questions post them back... Have a great day !!!

I made the update and still got the following message
---------------------------
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

alex@test.com on 10/7/2003 3:03 PM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the
recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<mycompany.com #5.5.0 smtp;553 mail rejected due to
excessive spam (xxx.xx.xx.x)>
--------------------------------------

(xxx.xx.xx.x) is the IP address of the SBS server

Still no luck

Alex

Still you can't resolve your domain from your ip using rDNS lookup. Check it
yourself... by doing a rDNS lookup on your severs ip address. In any case->
Go smarthost !
