I am having problems setting up an XP Laptop on my SBS 2000 Network. I
utilize a network setup disc to set up new computers. When I try to set
this pc up I get a "domain not found" or "can't set this type of computer
up". I don't have the error down word for word. Bottom line the setup
bails out. The same disc worked on some 98 and 2000 machines. I was also
able to release and renew the ip and get a new address within the DHCP
address pool. I am using the "problem XP laptop" at home on my cable modem
to write this, so I feel that it does have any hardware problems. Any
advice or suggestions will be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Just don't use the magic disk and do it manually. Make sure the ipconfig/all
shows that everything is pointing to the server-IP.
XP Pro, right?

I don't have remote machines join the domain. I have them vpn in and
they can do what they need from that connection. I can see Exchange
and I can see the company files with a start-run \\servername. The
biggest thing you need to worry about with remote users is that they
have up to date antivirus running and they have run Windows Update
often. I had a user who bought a new computer that thought she was up
to date. As you know up to date for computers is as of that minute.
You can be dangerously out of date in a week of not doing updates and
a day or less for some viruses. XP home is a bit of a pain to use
remotely. XP Pro works well.
