I have a new client with 3 users who use ProSeries Accounting from Intuit.
All 3 users were created with the standard user template on SBS 2000. There
is a feature in PS that allows users to transfer a past clients personal
data info from say year 2002 into the new year 2003 for new tax season. The
problem is it only works when the users have Domain Admin rights. Intuit
says a couple things. First they say, this feature should only be done by
an admin. Then they say, permissions on the server or the workstations must
be wrong. The Workstations are Win XPP, with local admin rights and Domain
User rights. ProSeries was installed into the Company folder which has full
share and security permissions/rights to everyone. I have checked &
rechecked and can't find what's wrong. I think it is ProSeries. Anyone
dealt with ProSeries before? I have installed to different shared folder
but same thing. I have upped the users to Power User status still broke.
Only Domain Admin works and that won't happen.

Hi Craig,

Ask Intuit which registry keys must be accessed by the user. If they will
provide that info, you can grant the users permission to those keys.

Their product is not compliant.

errr. Let me rephrase that.

Their product might not be compliant. [just in case your system *does* have
a misconfiguration ;-)] I haven't any first hand experience with this
particular product, but this is a common conundrum.

We [SBS MVP] were recently given a sit-down lesson on resolving this very
issue, instructor was Jeff Middleton [SBS MVP].

I don't think I'm at the knowledge point where I can lead you through to
resolution on your own [determining which registry keys need modification],
but if intuit would give you those then I do have class notes that would
take us forward.

Well,,, one more time I will talk to them, hope they can tell me which keys
need edited. I have talked to about 6 different help desk people from
Intuit, and don't get the same quality of help from any of them, a few have
suggested (in vague terms) that there is such a fix as you indicate, but
"didn't have the procedure and couldn't remember how to walk me through the
steps". Then would say check the server rights again.

What do you mean "if intuit would give you those then I do have class notes
that would
> take us forward." ??

Hi Craig,

Basically, the software needs to modify registry keys that only
administrators have permission to modify. So when a user who does not have
administrator rights tries to perform an operation, it fails because the
keys cannot be modified.

The way I understand it, this is generally a fault of the developer to place
the required registry keys in a location that the user does have permission
on (assuming of course that the developer intended to allow the operation at
the user level).

So, either the developer re-writes the code to place these keys in an
appropriate location; or, we find these keys and modify the permissions on
them.

You may be able to find software that can detect what registry keys are
being accessed when a user performs a task (perhaps someone will jump in
with a link). Or, perhaps the developer would be kind enough to simply give
you a list of these keys.
