MS People ?? - Odd Event Log Problem
Hi All,
I have just come back from a couple of weeks off work to find my fully
patched and upto date SBS2000 servers' event logs "unreadable". I say
unreadable because when you first open up the event log viewer, all logs
app, system etc are empty, however you can still click and highlight rows in
the MMC display even though there is no information being shown, so
something must be being loaded in to the MMC.
Looking at the .evt files shows that there is information in the actual .evt
files, but for some reason the Event Log MMC cannot view / display their
content.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Moving hardware
Can anyone point me in the direction of a best pactice for moving SBS 2000
to new hardware? The new hardware is dual processor Xeon, RAID 5, 3 x 36GB
Disks, 2GB RAM. Existing hardware is single PIII processor, software mirror
2 x 18GB disks, 1GB RAM.
Also, How do I move the data, especially Exchange? Can the SBS 2000
communicate with each other while I migrate the data or do I need a simpler
method e.g. remove disk from existing server, install in the new one, copy
the data, move disk back? This would not work with exchange though? Could I
recover Exchange via Tape (tape drives are also different)?
Any tips/experiences will be very welcome.
Thanks

Exchange memory usage
Hi I have SBS2K as my server with a vast amount of space for files etc. I
have a separate partition that is 10GB in size for exchange. Exchange has
almost used this up and I have asked uses to remove e-mail that are no
longer needed. The total loss in the end was 2.36 GB made free. but exchange
has not released this from the partition and still says it is in use and
keeps growing. Do I have a misconception of exchange on how it uses physical
memory? I feel very sure that the memory is supposed to be released back as
free memory but it has not.
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Memory usage
I recently installed SBS 2000 and have not been impressed
by its memory usage. I started with 512MB ram in the
server and the memory usage went up to about 600MB.
Exchange, ISA, IIS and SQL all using large chunks of
memory (do I need IIS, I am not hosting a website?). I
increased the RAM to 1GB and now the server is running at
1.6GB! Surely this can't be right. Tag: Print to email Tag: 135988

Frontpage Licensing
Hi All,
Just a licensing question. Is the frontpage 2000 that comes with SBS 2000
licensed for one pc or all the pc that have CALs or is supposed to be
installed on the server (I hope not!). I just got to thinking about what
the licensing actually was, I always thought the first one but am know
wondering.

Exchange, Outlook and VPN client Problems
I am having trouble with my Vpn clients, although they can
connect with the VPN fine Outlook refuses to work. My
clients have no trouble using shared resources it just
seems to be a problem with Outlook - it just trys to
connect and fails. Even trying to setup a new account it
can't do the 'check name' just crashes. Any Ideas would be
excellent. Got them using webmail for now but would be
good to get them back on the VPN. I did try using IMAP
instead of exchange server with no luck and i did look at
the registry entrys
ncacn_np rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_ip_tcp rpcrt4.dll
ncadg_ip_udp rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_http rpcrt4.dll
etc and all seems fine on the server. Any input would be
great as am running out of ideas! thanks alot

Exchange 2000, Distribution List, names were dropped
Hello,
I've noticed on one SBS server that some names/members in the Distribution
Lists disappeared.
The names are part of the Global Addresses List.
I added the missing names back in today. Why would names disappear as
members in the group list? It is SBS2000 with SP1, (exchange sp3). Some
users, as part of the company list, were not getting their emails and I got
notified today. It has been happening for a week.
Is there a way to login to the Exhange manager and see what is sitting in
each person's mailbox?
Why would names disappear? Odd. The mailboxes are there. The accounts work.
Thanks in advance,

SBS exchange and outlook - where do I start ?
We just got an SBS server, justified by a third-party sql app. That's
working fine and I have a bunch of PCs/users on the domain
running the application.
Now that that's done we want to get start using Exchange and file
services. Users run Outlook in internet-only mode now. I want to
move their PST data to exchange, and move "My Documents" to a network
share.
After that we want an outlook public folder with shared contacts and
calanders.
This may sound like a dumb question but where do I start ? I've never
used Outlook with an exchange server and I'm learning that with SBS I
should always look for a wizard before I start screwing with stuff by
hand.
Can someone point me to a good outlook/exchange book ?
thanks

Some users unable to recieve external email - suggestions?
Hi there,
I'm fairly new to SBS, but some experience with exchange.
I've taken over managing a SBS 5 server and need to
resolve an issue with two users unable to recieve internet
mail.
The SBS user settings appear to be set up identically to
the users whose mail works, I'm using the exchange webmail
client to test rule out differences in Outlook client
configurations, but I can't tell what's different. Any
ideas about where to look? All users can send and recieve
local email and send internet email sucessfully, just a
couple (who look like they were set up more recently) are
not able to recieve internet mail.
Thanks for any ideas,

ISA forward http requestor IP addy
I'm trying to find info on how to tell ISA to forward the http requestors IP

VPN
I am new to this so please forgive me if the question is nutty. We are planning on installing SBS 2003 (Standard Edition) for a client. This client has a second location running Server 2000 - both locations have about 10 desktops. We would like to set up to allow both locations to share the SBS server (and Messaging, Exchange Server, etc.). We also plan on having remote user getting on from home or the road. Both locations are setup using DSL. What is the best way to connect them? In the past we used a SOHO firewall; does SBS & Server 2000 have a better way?

Reducing Spam Associated with Posting to Newsgroups
Due to a recent increase in spam sent to posters in newsgroups, Microsoft advises that newsgroup participants should consider avoiding posting to newsgroups using their real email address. Microsoft is also committed to continuing to address the issue of spam from a technological perspective.
To help avoid receiving unwanted messages (spam) in your regular e-mail account, you may not want to include your regular e-mail address when you post a question or reply to a post in a discussion group. Instead you may want to do one of the following:
* Use a modified e-mail address: Use a different version of your e-mail address that others will understand, but that spam tools can't automatically pick up. For example, if your actual e-mail address is "emailname@account.com", consider using a modified e-mail address such as: "emailnameaccount.com.invalid", emailname@REMOVE_CAPS_AND_INVALIDaccount.com.invalid, or emailname@account.com.NO_SPAM. In this case, the spam tools will send mail to an invalid e-mail address, and others will know to exclude the "(removethis)" when they send you e-mail. When you post a question or reply to a discussion group, just enter your modified e-mail address in the appropriate box.
* Use a secondary e-mail account: Set up or use an e-mail account, such as a Hotmail account, that is separate from your primary account for posting to discussion groups. When you post a question or reply to a discussion group, use your Hotmail account as your e-mail address.
If you have feedback or questions about this, please post a reply in the newsgroup, or contact us at http://register.microsoft.com/contactus30/contactus.asp?domain=communities
Thanks!

wireless network with 2 NICs, wireless router, dynamic IP

SBS 2000 server has a WAN IP of 192.168.1.2 and is

It also has a LAN IP of 192.168.16.2. DHCP and DNS are on
for this IP.
All clients on the LAN have IP assigned automatically (in
the 192.168.16.x range) and DNS lookup on 192.168.16.2.
All clients can login to the domain when hard-wired, but
not when wireless. How can I make everything work? I would

Install error with MSDE application on SBS 2000
I am installing a third party server application that runs

get an error message stating that iit cannot continue
because SQL server is installed. When I check the SBS

324418 on what services are installed by default and SQL
is not listed. So my question is what components are
installed in a SBS deafault installation that will cause a
program to think SQL server has been installed. I verified
with the vender of the third party software that it checks
the registry for SQL entries. What exact entries they were
unable to tell me, but I did notice alot of references to
SQL in the registry.

OWA & SSL - very slow
Following on to my implementation of OWA using SSL via Chad Gross' article
(thanks, Chad, for answering my previous questions), I'm trying to work out
why it is so slow.
If I connect to the server from a remote site using a slow 64K link using
VPN, and the use IE to open https:\\internalname\exchange, the certificate
pops for approval up in less than a second, the login form pops up a few
seconds later, and the full OWA screen takes about 1-2 minutes to fully draw
itself, which I'll blame on the slow link - it's slow, but usable at a
pinch.
On the same link, if I don't first establish a VPN, and use
https:\\externalname\exchange, the certificate only pops up after about 5
minutes, the login screen apears after another 5 minutes, and the full OWA
screen shows itself after another 5 minutes or so - slow enough to render
OWA unusable.
Why should the connection using VPN be so hugely faster than not using VPN?
Slightly faster due to not requiring external DNS lookups I can understand,
but the difference is huge. Tag: Print to email Tag: 135891

SMTP mail not sending / Browsing issue.
Hello,
I have a problem that i can't seem to work out.
We are running Exchange 2000 via SBS and 3 days ago our server stopped
sending external mail. We had a look and the messages were sat in the queue
with 'Enumerate 100 Messages'. So we've tried that and nothing happened.
We've checked that the SMTP container details are correct and we've also
ensure all the DNS server address are correct.
What is also worrying is that the client machines are able to browse the web
through the ISA server in SBS but we aren't able to browse from the server
itself. We can browse via IP but not via name.
Can anyone suggest what we might be missing?
Many thanks. Tag: Print to email Tag: 135873

1st installation - lots of questions
Hi
I'm installing my first SBS and the test installation doesn't work as
expected.
Hardware:
New Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server (Dual P4 2.4, 1GB RAM, SCSI RAID, 2 NICs)
Zyxel Prestige 642R ADSL router
Software:
SBS2000 SP1 (OEM Dell installation)
Before installation I've read lots of tutorials and I'm using the SBS 2000
Best Practices book by Harry Brelsford too.
Here's my configuration:
Internal NIC: IP 192.168.16.2, DNS 192.168.16.2, Gateway empty
External NIC: IP 192.168.1.2, DNS 192.168.16.2, Gateway 192.168.1.1
(ADSL-Router)
I've run ICW (with DNS entries from ISP for DNS forwarders) and opened all
services for packet filtering
I created a new packet filter for telnet, so I'm able to configure the ADSL
router
Plugging the ADSL-router directly on a W2k workstation works perfect, so the
router configuration seems okay. Pluggin the router on my SBS server (same
network cable as before), Internet performance is slow, but not everytime:
Browsing a website (e.g. Microsoft) is mostly good for the first 2-3 pages.
After the next page, loading is extremly slow (sometime never ends). Or
browsing a google site. First or second page okay and fast....then loading,
loading....Sometimes I can stop the page and press refresh and the new page
is here immediately.
Downloading a file (e.g. w2k SP4) runs fine with good speed and no
interrupts. IF I come to the download page....:-(
The same bad Internet perfomance is when opening the OWA from the web.
Authentification window comes immediately, but load the OWA is VERY slow,
sometime hangs forever.
I did some other tests do find the source:
Plugged in a cable modem instead of the ADSL router. (had to change the
external NIC settings, rerun the ICW and rebooted server). Performance was
much better! (OWA from web was not really fast, but worked and was MUCH
faster than before). So I thought is has to be the ADSL router configuration
and not a SBS issue.
But why does the ADSL router works fine on a standalone machine? (with same
config)
okay, I've some other questions (POP3 connector), but I first want to have a
fast and stable internet connection (inbound and outbound)
Ah, one question more: For this test installation, I have connected the SBS
server on my home network HUB. My home network is only a workgroup (not a
domain!) and my w2k server has the IP 192.168.10.2. How can I access this
server from my SBS server? Can't ping! (SBS don't see my w2k server and vice
versa, but they are attached on the same HUB).
Hope you have some hints for this internet issue...
Best

File and Print Sharing required on External Interface?
I have just built a server with SBS2000 (Win2K SP3), standard
installation options, and with only a single Network Card which i

will be connected to the Internet.
Since i added the second NIC, Active Directory has started to generate

SBS & Software Assurance ?
We have never before used the SA program and no very
little about it. We purchased SBS2000 from Dell about 30
days ago with 25 license and also purchased SA since we
new that SBS2003 would be released soon. Dell does not
have a clue how the program works and can not seem to
help (many hours on the phone with Dell only to find out
that no one there knows what they are talking about).
Below are my questions (for now).
1. Where and how do I receive the SBS2003 media?
2. I can obtain my license numbers from the eOpen
website. I assume this will work fine and I will be
prompted during installation to enter these numbers.
With SBS2000 I was prompted for disks and not the actual
license numbers to type in.
3. SBS2000 included SQL and a couple other goodies that
are only available in SBS2003 Premium (not standard).
Will the new SBS2003 license that I received through SA
allow me to install the Premium media?

Hi, Having problems with the console loading in SBS2000
SP1. The same error arises in the administrator or
personal console. Error is:
Runtime Error
Type Mismatch: 'ProcessParams'
I have searched the knowledge base and have come up with
nothing. It also seems to coincided with the Exchange
System Attendant failing and properties of any events in
event viewer not showing. Any clues?

Error Installing ISA SP1.
Hi,
Am trying to install ISA SP1 on SBS 2000 with SP3 and I
keep getting the error "ISA Server 2000 is not installed
on this computer" which it clearly is and all the relevant
services are running. All that is different is that ISA
is installed in a different path from the default
Microsoft location.
Any ideas? Is my copy of ISA knackered and needs
reinstalling or could I just run the ICW??
Thanks,
Tim. Tag: Print to email Tag: 135811
