Hi Guys

Can anybdoy give me instructions on hot to make sure port
1723 is open for VPN traffic?
I am having varied results with different ISP's when
using VPN. They all connect but some connect to the
shared drives and not Exchange and some connect to
nothing! I think it's because of port 1723 not being
open but I'm struggling to find out where to check it or
where to open it! Port 47 is open.
Thanks for your help

Mark

well i would then assume you are connected.

check your ip address you have been given.
open explorer (not internet explorer)
in address bar type \\ipaddress where ip address is that of machine you
are connected to. not the public ip but rather the private one.
you should see shares.
alternatively use the name of the server e.g. \\ourserver

Hi Mark,

Please be aware that you do not need port 47 open... what you need is port
1723 and *protocol* GRE/47 (which some routers do by default when you
forward port 1723 and others require to select "PPTP passthrough" or
something like that). You are using a router/firewall in front of ISA?

You can do a port scan from the computer you are trying to connect to see if
that port is open all the way:
http://www.foundstone.com/index.htm?subnav=resources/navigation.htm&subcontent=/resources/proddesc/superscan.htm

or you can do it from this site:
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 (the ShieldsUp test)

However, if you can succesfully establish a VPN link to the server then
probably everything is ok with your setup and the issue comes from something
else. Are you saying that you can always connect, but you have issues with
other things? Can you describe these "other issues" in a little more detail?

Try to telnet to the port port from client (from command prompt):

telnet (server-ip) 1723

If you get connected screen blanks - if you don't, telnet responds with
"Could not open..." errormsg.

You don't need TCP 47, you need ip protocol 47 (GRE).

Thanks for all the replys

The issues are that once connected, some users are unable=20
to connect to the share drives, it says unable to=20
locate. Other users are unable to connect with the=20
Exchange server, it seems to be different with every ISP!

It does always connect to the server though and=20
authenticate. =20
Users are on Windows XP SP1

thanks for all your help
