Should I be able to ping my server's full distinguished
name <servername.local>?

If so, any ideas as to why I can't? I tried to add a
second DC and was not able to because the server's name
couldn't be resolved in the "wizard" setup. I know it
has something to do with DNS but not sure what.

I am able to ping just the server by name.

Thanks in advance

What OS on the client? How many nics in the server?

At the server, are you able to:
1. ping server.domain.local (<--- this is your sever FQDN)
2. ping server (<---- this is your server netbios name)
3. ping domain.local (<------- this is your domain dns name)

In all three cases, you should get a reply back from the internal nic.
However, you shouldn't get a reponse if you "ping server.local" (<--- this
is not a correct format, not your FQDN, it shouldn't resolve back to
anything)
If you can't do #3, could you verify in DNS forward lookup zone, you have a
Host (A) record called "(Same as parent folder)" with the same internal IP
as your server.

Got WINS installed on the server? W9x needs it. Did you set the DNS on your
nic to point to your server-IP?
Does the ipconfig/all show that everything is pointing to your server-IP?
