    - Customer Contact List I have a multi-part question. I need to have a customer contact list set up for my users to be able to access and email customers from. Obviously, setting up each customer with an Active directory user account is out of the question. Am I correct in thinking that I can accomplish this by setting up a new distribution group in Active Directory, and creating new contacts for each customer and adding them into the new group? I was also thinking that I need to add an additional OU to hold just the customer contacts so as to keep them separate from my user accounts, etc. The contacts would contain name, address, phone, and the external email address of the cutomer. Secondly, I have one user that needs to be put in charge of maintaining the cutomer contact list. How can I set her up so that she has access to add/delete/change contacts without giving her access to any other part of Active Directory?     - Can't Upgrade From SBS 2000 To SBS 2003 Because Of ISA 2000 I am trying to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. The setup in SBS 2003 will not let me because it says "Install Internet Security & Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 1 and the Update" I installed the service pack 1 and tried to run the SBS 2003 setup again and got the same message. I then isntalled service pack 2 and tried to run the SBS 2003 setup again and got the same message. Any idea as to what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks.     - Controller card Nm9835cv disappered from the device manager. HELP! Dear all, we have installed two external fax modems to our SBS2000 server machine. The second one actually was conntected to COM3 through an interanl controller card which is nm9835cv (this is a pci muiti i/o controller card). But recectly users told me that they can not receive fax through server anymore. I noticed that after i load MS updates at Dec 15, they won't be able to receive fax. I don't know this is a conincidence or not. I went to the Deive manager, I found that the NetMos 9835 pci Muiti-I/O controller disappears and under the Ports, I found that the NetMos Pci Serial port (com3) and NetMos Pci Serial Port (com4) disappear. Did anyone here experience similar things? Can anyone have any idea? This fax modem and controller card were installed by other person before. I have very little idea:(.     - Creating admin accounts I would like to create administrative users, but when I add the users in through Administrator Console, these user names show up through the Address Book applet (accessed through Outlook when you hit the TO: button when composing a message) even if I manually delete the user's mailbox in Exchange. How do I create an administrative user (to install and update applications on the workstations) that won't show up in the address book list?     - Convert SBS to member server of a new domain Currently have an SBS 2000 domain that has not been maintained well and is on old hardware. I have built an entirely new network domain with Windows 2003 Server, Exchange 2003 etc... I created new User ID's etc... moved all data, exported all mailboxes to new Exchange Organization and all work fine. I would like to install Windows 2003 Server on the existing SBS 2000 server and join it to the new domain as a member server. There is one application however that I would rather not re-install (a manufacturing package) that resides on this server. Is there a way to upgrade the operating system to Windows 2003 Server (no need to preserve anything associated with email, active directory etc...) and keep the application installed?     - SBS 2000 wont Boot I have had a SBS 2000 in production for a few years. Last night the server "locked up" and nothing I could do to get it out of this state. After rebooting the computer, it boots about 3/4 of the way into the windows2000 screen then freezes to a blue screen with a STOP CODE 7B INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE. I worked with Dell and they are pretty sure its not a hardware issue. We ran some hardware tests. It will not boot into safe mode. Same Error. The server has 2 drives in a RAID mirror.     - VPN freezes after connecting Hello, We run SBS 2000 with ISA 2000 and are trying to connect a remote user through the VPN. That machine is running Windows XP Tablet. The VPN seems to connect fine, and it sends data, but nothing is ever received back. It seems stuck on 354 bytes, I cannot map to anything, and when I remote desktop into the server, I cannot see the VPN machine.     - PLEASE HELP URGENT Reset Password not replicating I have a user that when I reset his password for the Corp network he is having to enter his password to connect to mapped network drives that he has always had access to.     - Event ID: 13568 JRNL_WRAP_ERROR I have received this error message in the File Replication Service Event log 4 times in the last 5 days. Never before have I seen it, so I don't know what caused it. After doing google searches, I have seen recommendations for a couple of differnet registry pokes.     - Network Connections Control Disappeared We are running SBS 2000. The network connections icon in the control panel has stopped functioning, and when selected, returns a blank window and hourglass that does not change after 30 minutes. Using the Internet Connection Wizard also reaches the final screen and quits, and the network adapter icons that should appear on the task bar are missing. We have rebooted several times, run scandisk, defragged, etc., etc. and still no satisfaction. However IPCONFIG /ALL returns the correct data for each of our two ethernet adapters.     - Why Does It Have To Be Soooooooo Difficult To Upgrade From SBS 200 I am currently running SBS 2000 and want to upgrade to SBS 2003 because I want to put Microsoft CRM 3.0 on my server and Microsoft CRM 3.0 will not run on SBS 2000. When I ran the SBS 2003 setup I was told that before I could upgrade to SBS 2003 that I first had to upgrade SQL Server 2000 to Service Pack 3. I want to install SP3a to my SQL 2000 Server. I currently have version 8.00.194 RTM. I get to the point where I am getting a message saying that "Setup is installing Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)..." I have tried this several times and I keep getting to the same place with hanging there. I let it run overnight and it has now been displaying that message for over 8 hours.     - Unable to connect Office 2003 to SBS Exchange 2000 I have two new XPSP2 workstations with Office 2003 but when after configuring them for the Exchange server I get one of three errors: a) on a profile migrated from an existing workstation (whose Office 2000 still works) Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened. b) on a new profile using Cached Exchange Mode Unable to open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to your Microsoft Exchange Server computer with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your offline folder file. c) on a new profile not using Cached Exchange Mode Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Ether there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance. The rest of the network is still operating normally, and the new workstations cab browse the workgroup and access files etc. Any ideas?     - Dell server / W2K failed redundancy Dell Poweredge with Windows 2000 server and SCSI disk mirroring I have inserted hard drive into second slot of mirror set. Usually when I do that Array manager shows that disk is rebuilding until it mirrored again. This time I got following errors: PERC 3/DI CONTROLER > ARRAY GROUP 0 > DC OS 0 > FAILED REDUNDANCY ...and.. BACKPLANE CHANNEL 0 > ARRAY DISK 0:0 READY ARRAY DISK 0:1 DEGRADED I am not sure what to do, becose I cannot afford downtime and no room for experimenting.     - Upgrading From SBS 2000 To SBS 2003 I currently have SBS 2000 installed on my server and want to upgrade to 2003 keeping all of my current settings, like domain, active directory and programs. I have both an NFR copy of SBS 2003 and the action pack copy of SBS 2003. I took the first cd from the NFR copy of SBS 2003 and booted my server from that cd. I was not asked if I wanted to do a new install or an upgrade. Once I was prompted to enter a user name, organization and a name for the domain I realized that this was not working the way I had hoped. At least I did not think so. I cancelled the installation at that point and rebooted my server. I was then prompted as to which o/s I wanted to load. I don't want 2 o/s's on my server I just want to upgrade everything that is on SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Can I do this with an NFR copy of SBS 2003? If not, can I do this with my action pack copy of SBS 2003? I am hoping that I do not need to get a SBS 2003 Upgrade copy of SBS 2003 to do this. So how does this work? Thanks.     - Isass.exe - System Error I am getting ready to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Before I begin this process I wanted to get a complete image of my SBS 2000 hard drive including o/s, active directory and programs. I have dual removable hard drives on my server. I used Norton Ghost 2003 to make a clone of my SBS 2000 drive to my secondary hard disk. It looked like everything worked until I tried to boot from the cloned drive: When I do I get the following message: *********************************** Isass.exe - System Error Directory Services could not find the file specified. Please click ok to shutdown this system. *********************************** I do not get this message when I boot up my server from the primary drive. I am hestitant to continue the upgrade until I know I have a complete backup. Any idea as to what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks.     - VPN... very nearly there! Trying to set up VPN; feel tantalisingly near success! The remote client runs XPHome. Have managed to create a MS-VPN link through a Solwise SAR130 Router to SBS2000 (single NIC) Server with a 5 workstation LAN. The Solwise has had a NAT rule added to forward MS-VPN info to correct port (1723) and Servers' static IP address. SBS has RAS running, configured with Server as 'router' and for 'remote access'. However RAS is still set to 'DHCP' rather than idebntifying a pool of addreses, even though all clients on the LAN actually have static IPs. Each user is configred for remote access and I can log in on the VPN connection with each users Name and password. A lovely message saying that I am connected appears on the remote client PC and when looking at the Server via remote desktop the RAS MMC shows activity for which ever User is logged in. However nothing else happens; I can't 'see' anything on that users space. I was expecting to see their 'desktop' or something. Am I missing something really simple! Thanks in anticipation!     - Will Norton Ghost version 10 Make An Image Of SBS 2000 Hard Drive I have been hearing different things as far as if Norton Ghost will make an exact image of my primary SBS 2000 hard drive including o/s, registry, active directory and the applications? I am looking to do this on a one time basis so I can make an exact image of my primary drive before I upgrade it to SBS 2003 just in case something happens. So can I use Ghost version 10 or must I get Ghost Enterprise (the server version which is like 10 times the cost)? Thanks.     - Disk Imaging Software That Works With Small Business Server 2000 I am looking for some disk imaging software that can make a complete image including programs, o/s, registry etc of my hard disk that has SBS 2000 on it and copy it to another hard disk. I want to do this because I am now ready to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 and I want to make a complete backup so that if I mess up the upgrade I have a way to recover. It looked like Ghost version 10 would do everything that I want it to do except I gather it does not run on Server o/s's. I think that there is an server version of Ghost but that cost $600 to $700 and I was hoping not to have to pay that much. Any suggestions? Thanks.     - Transfer local printer Hello folks. Been a while since I've graced these forums, but I've come up with something that has stumped me. I have a client with a SBS 2000 server sp4 which is situated at a data centre and all users connect via terminal service running on that server to access their applications. Their printes transfer fine to it and they are able to print back to their local desktops. We added a standard server 2000 + terminal server licensing so they have two servers now to which they can connect. This is just to alliviate load. Yesterday we had it up and going, users connected, their roaming profiles copied over from the sbs domain controller and printers transferred. Today they called not being able to print. I tunnel over and sure enough their local printers are no longer transferring to the new server but will transfer if they log into the sbs box. If I log into either terminal server from my location as myself or one of the general users my local printer transfers no problem. At first I thought "profile" issue? Rights issue? But like I said, if I log in from my computer here, as one of their domain users, no issue on either server. If they log in from their location, one terminal server transfers ok, one doesn't but it did yesterday.     - Making a complete hard disk image I have a server that currently has dual removable drives each with their own o/s. My primary drive is drive 1 which has my business applications on it and has Windows Small Business Server 2000. My secondary drive is drive 2 and has Windows Small Business Server 2003 on it and it is a test environment machine. I want to put an application, Microsoft CRM version 3.0 on drive 1 that requires that I upgrade my o/s to Windows SBS 2003. What I want to do is to upgrade my primary drive from Windows SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Before I do that I would like to I would like to make a complete copy of what is on drive 1 including the registry, active directory, programs, o/s, etc and put it on drive 2 so that if I have a problem with upgrading drive 1 I can continue to work from drive 2. I am ok if everything that is currently on drive 2 gets deleted. Can I do this and if so how? Thanks.     - Virutal Network Adapter (Microsoft's Packet Scheduler) I am getting a Event ID Error 1001: Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 54554344520D. Now, I run ipconfig /all and find an ethernet adapter on the server with the physical address above and it says it is a virtual network adapter... Now, I am starting to miss emails coming in when I get this error and I think it has something to do with this adapter and all these new errors that pop-up every 6-8 minutes. How do I delete this virtual network address. I tried ipconfig /renew and it sats that no operation can be performed on this adapter because the connection has its media cable disconnected. This is definately a virtual adapter because I only have two NIC cards in the server and they both appear to be working and they both appear in the ipconfig /all menu. What do I do?     - Limiting filename/pathname lenght Hi, we are using a SBS2k SP4 server, for file sharing and email. On that server we have a main share where users save company files: it is based on a quite complex and deep directory tree. OS allow users to save files giving quite long filenames, resulting in very long pathnames: problems arises when we need to copy/delete etc. that files. Is there a way (i.e. a server policy or other) to give users a limit in pathname length (i.e. returning them an erroor when they save a file if the path+file lenght exceed 255 chars)?     - Converting POP3 to SMTP in Exchange Hi there, I have SBS 2000 including Exchange 2000 and SQL 2000. I currently have Exchange setup using the POP3 connector. All of our emails are downloaded from one POP3 account. I am now getting my ISP to setup a SMTP email account for our company. How do i configure my Exchange 2000 to use SMTP? How are the emails routed to the correct users? I currently dont have ISA installed onto my SBS server.     - Upgrading to Exchange 2003 Hi there, I have been talking to my colleagues about upgrading a client of ours to Exchange 2003. They have told me that SBS2000 cannot run Exchange 2003, only Exchange 2000 - is this correct? Would I have to upgrade the OS first?     - Server Hangs After running fine for a few weeks even months my SBS2000 server hangs and has to be hard booted in order to login or to connect to from the network. There are no error messages and no errors are listed in the event logs. After reboot, the server is fine again for a few days/weeks, until it freezes again.     - Cannot create exchange mailboxes - help needed Hello Everyone. I've got a rather strange problem and couldn't find an answer by searching the newsgroups, so I shall post it here. The server is running Windows 2000 Small Business Server. When we use Active Directory Users and Computers to create a new user *AND* a new email box, it "creates" the email box, but Exchange Manager does not show the mailbox, but ADUC thinks the mailbox exists. Outlook cannot connect to the mailbox. Any ideas?     - SBS2000 does not save VPN passwords We manage a PPTP VPN server which we use to transfer files over the internet to our clients. To bring client sites on-line, our staff visit on-site and setup the VPN connection as a standard microsoft PPTP VPN connection under network connections in control panel. Our software then calls this connection to initiate file transfers. In most operating systems such as windows 2000 (ws or server), 2003, XP, NT or even 98 we have no problems and now have several hundred client sites operating without problem. Our biggest headache is SBS2000. For some reason which I am hoping someone can enlighten me on, the SBS2000 VPN connectoid will not save the password and hence whenever this connection is called, the file transfer is halted until a user intervenes and puts in the password manually.     - Disappearing Address Book Hi, I've been having a recurring problem with a client using XP Pro workstations and SBS 2003. One particular workstation, ironically the one relying on the address book the most, keeps having issues with not being able to access the shared contacts list published to public folders. The outlook clients are setup to use this address book at the default address list. The customer relies heavily on the shared fax service, and that is where the problem occurs most. Sometimes 2-3 times in a day, while in the shared fax wizard, they will click on the Address Book button and get a blank shared contacts list. Generally restarting outlook and then restarting the send fax wizard cures it temporarily (as does a reboot). But it keeps happening on a regular basis. I've done the initial stuff, reloaded outlook and reloaded the shared fax client to no avail. None of the other workstations have this problem.     - carousel backup strategies Our company recently purchased a carousel backup device with an 8-tape capacity (LTO2). Currently, we have it loaded with 5 tapes for daily full backup on our Dell server (windows 2003 Server). We are using BackupExec 10 for Windows Servers. One tape is taken offsite each night. As of yet, the unit has not been "partitioned", so we manually set the tape each day, but we plan to do automate this soon. What I want to know, is if there is any advice someone can give as to what experience people have with different strategies using this kind of system. We have over 120 GB of data to backup, and our tapes have a 200 GB (uncompressed) capacity. We are comfortable with the daily full backup because of this, but are more interested in advice on how to handle the rotation of the physical media, and the offsite storage, etc.? Does it still allow external pop3 email through or is all pop3 traffic directed to the exchange server? The issue I'm having is that I have setup pop3 for exchange server but also need external pop3 access (i.e. externally hosted pop3).     - Email I have been trying to create (extra) new email addresses for my users. When i create one e.g. x@domain.co.uk. I select SMTP and enter the name and domain. I then select OK an egg timer appears and that is that. About 10 mins later i am forced to crash the application as the task manager reports that it has hung. I can delete users and create new network users. These users get mailboxes, but no addresses. The users can log onto the network, but not onto email. If i send an external email to these new email accounts the mail is not rejected, it is at the mailbox. The mailbox is unaccessible, as the email addressbook does not contain my new addresses.     - Trouble mapping printers using "net use" I am having an issue mapping our networked printers using the net use command. I have a logon script set up that maps all the shared drives to each computer. All the drives map without any problem. The script is also set up to map two shared network printers. The script runs without any errors but the printers never appear on the users computers. If I open a cmd prompt on each users computer and type "net use" the list shows the correct printer mappings. If I try to "net use" the same lpt port, I get an error that the device name is already in use. However, in printers and faxes, or in any program (MS Word for example) the printers do not show up. We are using SBS 2000 on the server and all XP Pro clients. The script appears to run fine on Win2k clients because when I log onto the server, the script runs and the mapped printers appear without any problem. I have used both: net use lpt1: \\server\printer and net use lpt1 \\server\printer with and without the /persistent option. Nothing will get the printers to appear. I have checked the knowledgebase and googled and can't seem to find a resolution to this problem. Am I missing something?     - DNS Event Log Hi Group I backed up & cleared all our event log entries within the event viewer about 5 days ago. Since then there have been no entries in the DNS Server log. All the other 5 events are registering under the proper sub categories - Application, Security etc. There are no connectivity issues - the DNS server is fully functioning but I know that you usually get 2 or 3 "DNS server working properly" type events registered daily under the DNS category - there haven't been any since I cleared it. I've been into the DNS mmc & under the logging tab none of the debug logging options are checked - can you advise which one(s) should be? I've got a Win2k SBS server and the Performance Logs and Alerts service is
stopped. Whenever I try and start the service it appears to have started but
a few seconds later it is stopped again.
Can anyone tell me where to start looking to find out what is happening to
this service - there is nothing in the Event Logs.
