Name Resolution and Win98 Clients
What name resolution does SBS2K use? How should Win98
clients be configured for resolve names correctly?
I have just experienced the following at a client with a
mix of win98, 2K and XP clients on a sbs2k network:
The Win98 clients have "suddenly" developed a name
resolution issue. This is seen in Outlook prompting to be
logged and Internet access failures. Not even internal
names would resolve on any of the Win98 clients.
Eventually I configured HOSTS and LMHOSTS files on the
Win98 clients to get them to work correctly and resolve
names. These clients were initially all manually
configured and not done with client setup disks a long
while back. Everything was set as dynamic.
What I did was a work around but I do not believe it
should be how things are done. About 6x pc's needed this
method of configuring. In a larger network this could be
very time consuming.
Surely all should be done automatically.
Please assist with this query.

Can't browse My Network Places from the server....
As far as I can remember, the only thing that's changed on this SBS 2000
network was the introduction of 2 new XP Pro clients. All the other clients
are Win2K Pro. However, when I try to browse the network, I don't see
anyone. Even when I try to go to Start, Run, then type the client's URL, I
can't connect. Yet, the clients can see and connect to the server. Any help
would be great!

WINDOWS 2003 backup
I am having same issue I see others have with Windows 2003 backup. Neither
the new shell in server management that sets up a daily backup nor setting
up a daily backup as a job using the regular NT backup program work.
Unless I put in a completely blank tape the backup will not run from the
scheduler. Works perfectly when done manually. The server management
backup doesn't seem to have any options to set overwrite an existing backup
(or any other normal settings u may want to set like compression). I have
setup the NT backup to overwrite existing backups but the tape will not
mount. Have tried freeing the media (i.e. erasing the tape), but that moves
the drive to "free media", and still will not do the tape unless done
manually. I also notice that when doing tape manually, the software asks
for confirmation that you want to replace existing backup even though you
have checked off overwrite in the wizard.
This does not seem to be a hardware issue. I've installed the patch for the
Travan drive that came with the spanking new Dell Server preloaded with SBS
2003. The software still shows tape drives that are not on the system, e.g.
miniQIC, EVIC, etc.
It is amazing to me that not only did Dell not load the patch, they insisted
I contact Microsoft myself to get it, on an OEM server preloaded with the
OS. And they must have done extensive testing on the backup huh?
Any help from anyone who has actually figured out the solution for this
(other than buying better backup software than Microsoft seems to be able to
manage to produce), would be deeply appreciated..

VPN Access to SBS2000 from overseas
Customer set up on SBS 2000, CEO travels a lot so set up
VPN on his laptop to get into the server for mail, shared
files, etc. All works as designed. He is now in Costa
Rica, and has high speed internet access available at his
condo but when firing the VPN (plain MS client) it hangs
while verifying the userid/password, and says he gets no
error message back. He also claims that he was in a
remote section of the country a few days ago and was able
to use dial-up (not sure to what number) and get access,
albeit very slow of course. My questions:
1. Does SBS remote access need to be configured to allow
a user in a foreign country access?
2. If so, was his dial-in experience most likely due to
dialing up a US phone number (again, not sure what he did
dial)?
3. If 1 and 2 are 'no', what should I try?
4. Could it be that his ISP doesn't allow VPN
connections?
Thanks.

Restrict users from changing IE home page
Hi
We have a corporate intranet home page which we want all users to retain as

Looking in gpedit the only likely active directory control seems to be to
disable the IE general tab.
Is there any other way?

Hi
Can somebody give me some guidance on how I go about setting up Terminal

I have a Windows 2000SBS (with ISA) and I want to setup a workstation within

My goal is for a remote user to connect to the workstation over the internet

ISA configuration - BlackBerry Enterprise Server on SBS2K
I'm trying to get a BlackBerry server running on my SBS.
Does anyone, or anyone you know, run a BlackBerry
Enterprise Server on their SBS2K? (A "Yes" on this one
would be huge. Be my yes.)
The current headache is ISA configuration. I haven't even
installed the software, instead focusing on getting a
positive result from their connectivity test program. The
BES needs outbound access on port 3101 to BlackBerry's
servers. It also needs either a transparent proxy
connection, or outbound port forwarding.
First, port 3101. I believe I need to create 2 IP Packet
Filters - 1 TCP, 1 UDP. Here they are:
Filter Name: SRP Connection TCP
Protocol: TCP
Direction: Both (overkill - was in random tweak mode)
Local port: Fixed - 3101
Remote port: All ports
Filter applies to: Default external interface IPs
And: All remote computers
Filter Name: SRP Connection UDP
Protocol: UDP
Direction: Both
Local port: Fixed - 3101
Remote port: All ports
Filter applies to: Default external interface IPs
And: All remote computers
Doesn't that make a bigger than needed hole in my firewall?
And the transparent proxy/outbound port forwarding:
I'm at a loss, here. Can you bypass the proxy for local
requests? Should I put the firewall client on the SBS?
(that sounds evil) Is outbound port forwarding possible
with an ISA Server?
Did I ask if anyone ran a BES on their SBS2K?
TIA

where is the missing space (C: drive)
Hi,
We have been runing SBS2000 for a number of years. The C
drive is only 4 Gb. All programs (Exchange, SQLServer
etc) are installed on the D drive. The only thing on the
C drive is the OS. We have about 980Mb of free space on
C. Whenever I run a security update, I move the unistall
files from C to D. To do this I use "Ctrl-X", "Ctrl-V"
(to move the files) After doing this the last time I
noticed I didn't gain any free space (although I moved a
number of files from C to D). So, I did a "Ctrl-C", "Ctrl-
V" on the D drive files to a new folder on the D drive. I
then deleted the old files. After finishing, I looked at
my free space on C and it agained 50Mb. BUT THAT IS AFTER
MOVING FILES ONLY ON THE D DRIVE!?!? When you use Ctrl-X
to move files between drives, is it just a pointer and the
space is still stored on the original drive? If so, that
is bad.
I then summed up all the space for each folder on C and it
only comes to about 1.5Gb, viewing the properties on C, it
shows used space as 3.2Gb. Where is the remainder of
space?
This isn't a huge issue (we have been around 1Gb free
space for a long time) but I'm curious how the OS
calculates free space. Tag: OWA Page cannot be displayed Tag: 157093

email routing with POP3 connector in Exchange
Hi
I have Exchange 2000 and the exchange server dials into a
POP3 mail account which is a "catch all" account
(<anything>@domain.com).
I have set a mail listing up for each user, e.g
username@domain.com send to username exchange user.
I have two questions on this topic?
1. What happens to email that has a alias that is not a
username email address. e.g
<anythingbutusername>@domain.com.
Where is it stored? Does it get returned?
2. How do i get two different email alias's to route to
the same exchange user?
Do i set up a seperate "mail listing", in the exchange
POP3 connector, and then assign that email address(mail
listing) to the same exchange user?
Or
Do i place another email address in the users "properties"
under the exchange tab?
When the email is directed to the mail client i want the
email to be able to be reconised seperatly. This is so i
can set up a rule to place the seperate email addresses
into different folders.

Print error alerts
We are running SBS2K, and many printers are shared off this server.
There is a packing slip printer in the warehouse that often goes offline,
has a paper jam, or runs out of paper, and the warehouse staff never seem to
notice in a reasonable amount of time.
I want to set an alert, so that when the printer goes off line, or there is
a paper error, the alert can net send a message to a particular PC, so a
phone call can be made..
We managed to get the basics working, and set it so that when the counter is
greater than 0, a message would be sent. The problem we have is with
resetting the counter.
Currently, the counter is set to 30 after a few errors, and every time it
polls, it sends a message, even after the problem is fixed. We have had to
stop the alert, but when we restart the alert, it sends more messages, as
the counter is still 30.
Can youone suggest anything?

Server Status Report - Corrupt Layout

Exchange doesn't distribute email after DOS attack
SBS2000
Over the weekend my customer told me that they could not collect email,
(using POP3). The server was also running low on drive C drive space so I
assumed it was an issue with that. However visiting them yesterday &
checking with their ISP (Demon) it seems that they had a email DOS attack.
Demon support said that there were over 25,000 emails waiting to download &
pointed out that we would never download that many emails by 56k modem.
Demon then deleted all the DOS emails which were addressed to the
postmaster. The postmaster account is not allocated to a user on the
Exchange server, so I assume that it would just bounce them after processing
the mail download.
What appears to have been happening is that the POP3 collector would attempt
to download the emails & each time, after several hours (or days) the POP3
collection would fail. As it was POP mail, all the mail would remain on
Demon's mailservers & also Exchange would not process any of the mails that
it had already downloaded as a complete POP collection had not occurred.
This seems to have made exchange store some sort of temp download file on
the Exchange drive & had eaten all the disk space. How do I free up the disk
space caused by this? I cannot find any obvious place for this file.
After Demon deleted the DOS emails, we ran a successful POP3 download which
I was able to check using Demon's webmail facility (the mailbox had emails
before I synch'd the email & afterwards it was empty). However although
Exchange server has downloaded the new emails, it has not processed them &
delivered to the clients. Could this be a problem with some huge temp file
sitting somewhere?

UPgrading from SBS V4 to SBS2003
Presently we use the IP address range on our SBS V4 of
89.2.2.--- this is because we also have a Unix server on
the network which uses this address range. Will SBS2003
accept 89.2.2.2 as its IP address rather than the
dafault? If not is there a solution other than changing
the IP address of the Unix server. Also is it possible to
do a migration upgrade from V4 to 2003?
Thanks

Exchange clock always an hour out
Hi
Our Exchange server is always an hour out. Even when we
move between BST and Winter time it remains an hour
adrift.
Has anyone seen this before, or knows how to rectify?
Thansk in advance
