Redirected Folders
Hi all,
I am having an issue with a redirected folders group policy that I added to
our SBS 2000 server. This policy is in addition to the Default Domain Group
Policy. I did not alter that(DDGP). I was having everyone's My Documents
folder redirected to a network share on the server. The powers that be
decided that they did not want this for all employees at this time and
therefore I disabled the policy, however, it appears that everyone's folders
are still being synchronized to the server when they log out. Am I missing
something here? Do I need to delete the policy as opposed to disabling it?
Why has the disabling of the policy not stopped the synchronization of the
folders?

Windows XP Pro, SBS 2000 and Outlook 2000....
Hello everyone:
Just wanted to know if anyone else has had problems with Windows XP Pro
workstations connecting to the SBS 2000 server (using Outlook 2000), and not
having them be able to send, or reply to their email. They can both receive
email just fine - it's replying, or creating new messages that comes back
with an error.
I temporarily have them set up using OWA. Apparently, OWA works for
them. If they were to log onto another workstation in the network (all the
other workstations are Windows 2000 Pro), their email works fine.
Any ideas as to what I would need to change on the two XP boxes, or is
there a setting I need to adjust on the SBS 2000 server? Please advise.

Routing and Remote Access
I posted this morning with no response so I thought maybe I wasn't clear.
My question is this: When I change the pool of ip addresses handed out by
Routing and Remote Access isn't all I need to do is restart Routing and
Remote Access to have the new pool of addresses take effect?

Off Topic: Monitoring Network Speed
Hello,
SBS2K. I know this is off topic, but I figured someone here would be able to
answer this or at least point in the right direction. I am currently running
4 10Mbps hubs on my network. I am purchasing 4 new 100Mbps, full duplexing
switches to replace them. I know theoretically how much faster this should
make the network, but I was looking to try to take some measurements so that
I can gauge the speed increase. Besides copying files and running some
operations in the database, are there any more scientific ways to measure
the difference. I appreciate it. Thanks,

SBS Install
While I've deployed many Windows servers, my experience with SBS is somewhat
limited.
Scenario: Small business with three users/workstations is presently on SBS
2000. It resides on an older server of questionable reliability.
A new server has been purchased and everything is going to be transferred to
it. When SBS is installed it detects the original server and will not join
the domain...a new domain must be created.
Question: What is the best way to bring the new server online and transfer
the information /settings from the old server to the new server?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

2 NIC setup questions regarding an external firewall router.
Hey everyone,
Perhaps I am making this harder than it should be but I have two issues that
I am not sure on how to handle 1)my ts sessions as well as using other
remote admin programs, pcanywhere, remote administrator, vnc, etc are
abruptly disconnecting all users. Connection just quits 2)how to better
manage the external firewall router internally, how to configure from an
internal workstation
Cannot determine why my connections are disconnecting. How can I configure
my external router without connecting directly to it from a laptop (I bypass
the server and switch, setting a manual ip on the laptop to 192.168.0.2)?
SBS2k current setup:
----------------------
I have an external firewall router. It connects to our ISP cable line.
ISP cable is connected to the WAN port of the router. Firewall router ip is
192.168.0.1
Server's external nic is connected to the of the LAN ports of the router.
Server external nic is 192.168.0.10
Server's internal nic,192.168.16.2, is connected to our managed Dell switch
which all pcs connect to. PCs are on 192.168.16.x subnet
A basic question:
------------------
Is there a way to configure the firewall router (192.168.0.1) from a
workstation PC (192.168.16.30)?
Or can I do the following, #3 below? This would allow me to manage the
router from any lan pc but what happens to my DMZ?
1. External firewall router connects to ISP cable on Wan port
2. Server's external Nic connected to #1 LAN (Firewall router has a
built-in switch) port on external firewall router
3. Connect the #2 LAN port of the firewall router to a port on the Dell
managed switch
4. Keep the internal NIC connected to the Dell managed switch
Thanks in advance,

transfer SBS 4.0 mailboxes
I am looking to upgrade an SBS 4.0 server to SBS 2003 and
have a number of questions:
1. Is is possible to carry out a clean install of SBS 2K3
onto new hardware and transfer users, data, mailboxes etc
from SBS 4.0?
2. If its necessary to upgrade to SBS 4.5 first, are
there any major issues with upgrading to SBS 4.5 as I am
concerned there is no easy fall back if problems are
encountered. Where can I obtain this upgrade to 4.5.
3. Likewise, any issues with upgrading to SBS 2000 or SBS
2003.
4. Can an OEM version of SBS 4.0 be upgraded to a later
version using a full boxed product?

Computer Can't log on
I have SBS2K server w/ 40 users. I have a client that has been out of town
for a week. He came back today and cannot logon. I tried logging on w/
admin id and still won't log on. When I look at network connection it shows
packets being sent but 0 recvd. Also, automatic ip address is out of the
range comming from dhcp.
Gave him one of my static ips. Now the adapter sends and rcvs packets but
can't access server resources. Moved box to computer room eliminating all
possibilities of wiring issues.
Could it be that there are no more ip's available in the range? If so, where
do I find that?

Slow Server/Network Issue
Setup:
SBS2000

SQL
Lately it seems as if the server/network has gotten slower and slower.
After the server runs for a fews hours the RAM seems to climb up to over a
gig in use. However the server only has 512 of physical RAM. I know that
Store.exe is designed to use all and let ram go as it needed be however it
only uses around 200meg at most. I believe that the RAM issue is having a
adverse effect on network preformance. Once the ram usages gets that high I
can hardy use the server. There are long pauses between anything I do and
using it is almost impossble until a restart is made. As well as the
network seems to be effected as well. There are slight delays in accessing
drives andor mail. I am going to stay after today and hopefully pinpoint the
problem to the ram. I know with SQL I need more ram but it is not really
used at the moment except for one small database Would just adding ram do
the trick or might that just prolog the time it takes for the system to
become slow. Any ideas, nothing new has been installed or changed lately? Tag: QoS Packet Scheduler Tag: 155659

Now my question: For you SBS consultants out there, how do you advertise =
to attract new customers? How does a new business owner who wants to =
have a professional set up a SBS server find a consultant? Do you just =
thumb tack a business card on a bulletin board at CompUSA?
Is there a web site for posting your business and location?
By the way my local Telephone directory has several pages of computer =
consultants. From personal experience I know that most of them fall into =

basically temp employment agencies. =20
So, is there a Chamber of Commerce site, business to business version of =

VPN - RRAS won't set ports
I need some help quickly on this please. TIA.
I've followed the smallbizserver.net instructions to set my SBS2k up for VPN
access. I have allowed VPN connections using ISA and configured RRAS for
VPN.
In RRAS, I have right-clicked Server ports and configured WAN Miniport PPTP
for Remote Access Connections (inbound only) for 5 ports. I have configured
WAN Miniport L2TP for 0 ports. When I click apply or OK I receive the
following error message:
"Routing and Remote Access
The port information cannot be saved. Cannot complete this function.
(800703eb)"
I'm only given an Ok option. When I click this, the port information hasn't
been saved.
On RRAS server properties, the following options are selected:
General Tab: enable as router, LAN & Demand Dial, Remote Access Server
IP Tab: Enable IP Routing, Allow IP-based remote access, assign address by
DHCP
When I run ICW, I get the following error. Would this be related?
"The Internet Connection Wizard was interrupted because of an error or user
intervention. Details have been recorded in the file "icwlog.txt," which can
be found in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice\Support directory.
Would you like to cancel this action?
Click Yes to exit the wizard and restore your pre-wizard settings.
Click No to proceed with the wizard and configure any remaining components.
Click cancel to close the wizard immediately without restoring your

SBS 2003 "impossibly slow" problem
Trying to install SBS2K3 standard on an AMD machine with a Gigabyte Pro2
mainboard.
As soon as the Server 2003 install was complete the PC became impossibly
slow and unreactive to mouse clicks or the Start menu button although if an
application could be started, it did seem to run "reasonably OK".
But this presentation was totally unusable and the full SBS install could
not follow. A clean reinstall produced the same result.
After a long search I found a previous post suggesting that there was a
registry setting at fault.
HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop - the default entry for MenuShowDelay should be
400 (milliseconds).
A value of 0 was what was actually there....
When this was changed - followed by a log off & on -Server 2003 suddenly
started behaving normally again.
Just thought it was worth reposting this "solution" as it is so dramatic..!

Im using SBS 2000, and frequenty we cant open or save files in excel, word,

Is this a problem of XP and Win98 clients or its a fail of SBS2K server.

Newbie with a smallbiz2000 installation, check my config?
I've been thrust into a situation where I have to setup a smallbiz2000
server, with little time and no training. Please tell me if there are
any errors in my thought or any potiential long term planning issues
with the say I plan on doing this? TIA, here is my proposed
configuration:
Existing is 13 Windows 2000 Professional workstations (with MS Office
XP Pro and Outlook) configured to the Internet through a broadband
gateway (NetGear or something like it) who's ip is 192.168.1.1 and all
the clients are DHCP.
I've had numerous troubles with installing smallbiz2000. Configuring
ISA was the straw that broke my back, so I thought my easiest solution
was a multihomed network configuration. Each workstation's NIC will
be configured with two ip addresses one on the gateway's subnet and
one for the subnet that the server is on. I'll configure the server
with an ip 10.0.0.100 (I'm using 10.0.0.100 only because on the
192.168.1.x network it is .100 also)
The smallbiz2000 server will be Active Directory enabled, running
Exchange Server (full schedule, task, contact sharing, etc.) and
Network fax and file sharing.
I've set this configuration up on a lab setting and everything seems
to work fine. I'm concerned with two issues down the line. First
question/issue, we're going to want VPN so can I add say a linksys
BEFVP41 at this location and one at a remote location with a W2K Pro

Static IP, Terminal Server , Exchange
As a small business owner I have been thrown into the
role of IT. I have a server with about 8 in office
workstations. I would like to set up terminal services
when some employees can not make it in to work. I
currently have a setup as such. Internet
modem>router>switch>to work stations and server. Because
of internet problems my ISP has provided me with a Cicso
modem with a builtin router. I was told by them that if
I want to utilize terminal services that I would want to
give me exchange a seperate static IP addess and I could
set the other info up as it is currently. I'm very green
to this please help. Any tutorials would help
tremediously. Thanks Tag: QoS Packet Scheduler Tag: 155624
NEWBIE: backing up registry
Hi All
I am setting up for VPN on SBS2000 and looking at the reg edits under
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292822
In the bit where it says back up the registry first. should I just make up
an emergency repair disk as in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;231777
or use the backup facility as per
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;240363
Where is the backup made I guess the backup will not fit onto a floppy - is
it best to burn it onto a CD and restore from this.
What do other folks do.
Thanks for your help, David Tag: QoS Packet Scheduler Tag: 155618
Store.exe
Hi All,
I'm running Windows Server 2003 Small Business with
Exchange ( P4 3Ghz 768 MB Memory ).
When I restart my server, the process 'store.exe' has in
2 days more then 150MB memory.
I must restart every 2 days my server, because I can't
work with the server if the memory is more than 1GB.
How can I fix this problem?
Thanks.

Remove Device
Hi
I migrated my SBS200 to new hardware via Backup/Restore
(I swore I won't never do it again)
Everything is RUNNING,not sure if is WORKING
I found I can't remove some devices
Those devices were installed on the old hardware, and i don't need them
anymore
Especially some On-Board devices,such as sound,graphic,net devices
every time I tried to uninstall them
I got an error says "System needs this device"(I translated the messages, cuz
i'm not using an English version)
How do I remove them?

OTT: New building 300yards away
Hi
Slightly OTT, so forgive me.
We are planning to move the warehouse functions to
another building ome 300 yards away. there will be a
requirement for some 10 PC's in there to be linked to the
network.
It may be possible to dig up the car park in between to
lay a cable, but it is a bit long for standard Ethernet.
Has anyone any suggestions? I though of maybe an infra
red transmitter and reciever on the roof or using some
fibre glass cable and getting a couple of gigabyte fibre
NIC's.
Thanks

reloading CALs
How can CALs be reloaded on a replacement server? Setup from the diskette
looks for a MAC file, which must have been on the retired server. When it is
not found it asks for a password. How does one obtain this password?

The "Redirect my documents to the server from client" does not work in my SBS 2003.....
Hello
I have problems by configuring the redirecting of My documents to the server
(syncronisation)
If i go to the System Manager, and then Users, then you have in the menu an
option "configure My documents redirection", if you select that, you get a
windows with 3 possibel configurations,
1 Redirect to default folder
2 Redirect to a specific folder
3 Do not redirect
So i choose the first, but if a client logs in, it only syncronize his
profile, but not the My Documents folder... If i choose the second option
and point it to the already build in "User shared folder" folder, it also
do'nt( I see that the server creates a folder inside the "User shared
folder" folder, but nothing more) works because if i choose the second
option, i apply, close all windows and go again look to the window with the
3 options, i see that it is again placed on the first Option, How is this
possibel? i chose again Second and give the User shared folder" folder in,
apply, but again after you go look again, it is point to the First
selection.
Could it be a bug? Because also if i choose to configure the password policy
(still in Server Management) and i put it to mimimum 5 characters (standard
3). Apply it, and close evrything, if i go look again i see that it is back
placed to 3 characters or whatever it was....
I have at my office create a test case with an SBS 2003 and had the same
problem so i deleted al the domain users, and tryed it again, and then
suddenly it work.. but on the SBS 2003 i can't delete the users because the
are using the accounts. But i also think that isn't the solution..
Does anyone now how i can find a solutions about redirecting the My
Documents folder on a easy way or alternative way....
Big Thanks

LDAP easy on SBS2000?
We are looking to purchase a standalone networked multifunction printer such
as the Lexmark X422. They seem pretty good value for money - fast laser
printer, photocopier with ADF, scanner (in theory can scan and sent result
over TCP/IP back to any client PC - not sure how :O( and scan to email
(including creating PDF internally)
However, a lot of the latter functionality depends on LDAP access to server
for ease of use.
Would this kind of unit be able to get full LDAP info easily, or would there
be any issues on the SBS side? I know zilch about LDAP, but did download
Softerra's LDAP Browser utility and found I could 'anonymously' see some
LDAP info, but not e.g. list of AD Users (could have been me being
clueless).
Also, I assume LDAP would allow you access to the main AD list of users, but
not to any Exchange Server type lists e.g. public contacts??
TIA
p.s. - anyone with one of these know if you have to put any software on the
server itself? - I know that advice is usually to avoid, but not too sure if
that further limits functionality Tag: QoS Packet Scheduler Tag: 155588
NEWBIE: how to restore a mailbox
Hi All
I inadvertently deleted a user from the console (but not through active
directory). Now he's gone!

How can I get him back?

Dynamic IP
I'm about to re-load SBS2003 and use two NICS. I'll use a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx inside my Netgear router, but an cable company also doles out dynamic IP addresses. I believe I should have a static IP for the external NIC. I'm sure I'm not alone with this situation. I'd appreciate any suggestions or experiences with this. Thanks

To Do List missing items...
Greetings,
We just installed SBS2K and the "BackOffice To Do List" is missing the
following important items:
Add client licenses
Define client applications
Add user
Add printer
Enable network interfaces
Configure access for Terminal Services
The list does however contain these items:
Welcome
Configure Internet Information Services
Internet Connection Wizard
Configure remote access
Configure modems
Configure Exchange management
Configure server status report
Getting started
Any ideas on how to correct this other than a full reinstall???
Thanks in advance,

AD User creation
In SBS2000, can a group be configured that can create users, but not
administrators? I'd like pseudo-admins to be able to create domains users

Outgoing mail Disappering
Hi All:
We just installed a brand new SBS 2003. I think Microsoft had done a
wonderful job.
I however do have a problem. Any mail we send outside is disappearing. We do
not get any Non Delivery Notice. I have tried sending to all accounts at
hotmail but to no avail. Mail simply diappears.
I did only one thing different . I configured the address of internal NIC
from 192.168.16.2 to 10.0.0.1 via network connections. As soon as I relized
that I should have used a wizard; I went back and re-did with wizard. Please
help
Thank you

SBS 2000 / Exchange 2000 / Win 98 / Messenger
Here at PMI we did not sign-op for Software Assurance and
are therefore not eligiable for LCS, which I don't believe
is applicable in our case anyway because we have an SBS
2000 network running a full suite of components which
includes Exchange 2000. I understand IM was dropped in
Exchange 2003, however Exchange 2000 does facilitate IM.
Our SBS 2000 installation is a small development network
with access limited to a small group of engineers. We have
historically been able to communicate with both internal
and external IM clients. Windows Messenger version 2.2
which originally came with our installation is no longer
compatible with MSN Messenger blocking access to external
IM clients. Windows Messenger 5.0 was downloaded and
works well with our XP and Win2000 clients, but does not
run on Win 98 machines. The casual communications pathway
facilitated by IM improves design collaboration along with
providing cost savings for our development efforts. We
purchased our server from Dell Computer and I installed
it. We are looking for a messenger which will work with
internal and external IM clients running on Win 98
machines within an SBS 2000 network. These Win 98 clients
exist within our network to provide backward compatibility
for expensive systems emulation and design software which
has difficulty running on XP and Win 2000 machines. I'll
purchase the messenger if the price is right. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Tag: QoS Packet Scheduler Tag: 155565

SBS2000 Client IE Problem
I have a client with SBS2000, he is not using ISA and we have not installed
firewall clients on workstations, but every client that is connected to the
domain, the browser proxy settings are configured to point to the ISA
server. Is there a way I can disable this so it doesnt happen, or do I have
to continue configuring the browser manually. I have posted this question
several times but people tell me to uninstall the firewall client, it is not
installed.

The only item that shows is 6008 (Dirty Shutdown), I've been through all

find a reason why this happens.
Anyone had a similar experience?

SBS 2003 POP3 connector crash
Hi, my pop3 connector crashes when I try to edit the
routing rules for the mail boxes. When I edit the rules
and click "ok" to continue the complete management
console closes and the changes are not saved.
I get and event ID 1000 in the application log with the
error message of "Faulting application mmc.exe Version
5.2.3790.0 , faulting module popconfigsnap.dll version
5.2..2651.0 at memory address 0x00011657.
I have rebooted the server, replaced the .dll file opened
up the mmc and added the pop3 snapin on its own all to no
avail.
Anyone come across this and have an answer? Is it
possible to uninstall the pop3 connector and reinstall it
without effecting anything else and how?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,
Is the QoS Packet Scheduler necessary on the external NIC when running SBS
2000 in a 2 NIC confiuration, Static IP, and a Router?
No, you don't need anything on the external NIC except TCP/IP.
