    - Can't restart OWA site On the weekend I restarted our SBS2K server as we were having some issues accessing our SQL server. On restarting the SQL server is fine but our OWA service was no longer visible. Via the console I see IIS - server - Default Web Site (Stopped) I tried to restart it but got 'Address already in use' There are some other web sites the Admin site (port 3467) & Symantec Anti-virus (port8081) are running fine and I can connect to them. I can't find what is using port 80 but I expect it is ISA server using it as a proxy. The server has a single NIC behind an ADSL router/firewall with port forewarding to port 80 on the server.     - Redirecting general email etc. Hi, I've posted this on the Exchange newsgroup as well. I'm the network administrator (sort of) for a network consisting of a Windows Small Business Server 2000 with 10 client workstations, most running NT4 SP6a, some on XP Pro. There are a couple of issues at present. 1) Before we got the server, we had a peer-to-peer LAN & all our email went to one address (bushfire@shoal.net.au). When we got the server, we got a domain name as well (b-es.com.au). It was set up so that all the email for a specific person could go to that person's Outlook inbox. However, to catch any messages addressed to the old email address, it was set up so they went to the boss's Outlook. He now wants them to be redirected to the receptionist's Outlook. On the server, I've gone into the Email Adresses tab on the boss's User Properties in Administrative Tools/AD Users & Computers, deleted the appropriate SMTP (b-es@shoal.net.au), and added it to the receptionist's one. Didn't work. I've looked at the Recipient Policy in Microsoft Exchange, but it only has the default polcy, got nothing about this that I can see. Help! 2) Related issue. The boss wants to set up some other general type email addresses, & have them go the receptionist as well. Do I just add them in her Email Addresses tab in AD Users & Computers? I tried it, but one of them wouldn't take, it was already being used, I assume it's related to the previous issue. ie he wants one of the general addresses to be bushfire@b-es.com.au. 3) More of an Outlook question, but may be related to the previous questions. We are all running Outlook 2002, & I set up some Public folders for contacts, staff movements etc. After I set them up, I went around & ticked the option "Show this folder as an email Address Book" on the various client machines & made it the default address book etc. However, this option is greyed out on the receptionist's Outlook. When I created the public folders, in Permissions I set the default Permission Level to Editor. When this problem occurred on the receptionist's machine, I specifically added her in the permissions as an editor. Still coudn't add the contacts as an address Book for her. What gives? 4) Finally, any ideas about stopping SPAM. Do I push for a corporate solution like "Trend Micro", or can I get away with one of the freebies around such as Ella.     - OWA Login Problem Unable to login to OWA. I am able to get the login window popup, but when the username and password is entered the login window pops up again without the password. I assume it is not accepting the password. This is happening for all users. Tried internally and through an external workstation. Ran ICW again, and still have the same problem. Any ideas?     - Exchange can not mount storage group . After install system state (because sysvol data is corrupted) can not mount the mail box store and public folder store for exchange server, and the M: driver for exchange is gone, the error id for mount store is c1041724, and Error for event viewer ID is 8197,9518,454,1005,9175.     - Exchange Server Issues Background:SBS 2K running on single server. Local domain cts.local. (192.168.1.2) 2 NIC cards 1 for internal LAN, 1 for 56k dial up modem. Internal NIC goes to Ethernet wireless access point (192.168.1.1) 5 client computers running win 2k or xp pro all configured with firewall client. DHCP from server is running, all clients configured for DHCP. IP's assigned dynamically. Earthlink as ISP. Modem hooked directly to phone source. ISA server configured with internet filters enabled. All client computers access internet through proxy server local address 192.168.1.2. IE connections set for proxy server 192.168.1.2(8080) Exchange server running with default configurations. All clients have internal accounts as username@cts.local. Running Outlook 2002. What's Working: All clients can access the internet. Configured Exchange pop3 connector with 3 clients using mail account information from earthlink and internal user. Scheduled to contact earthlink each hour during the day. At present all clients are receiving mail from ISP via exchange server. Clients can address email to internal users and email is sent and received correctly. What's Not: Sending email externally does not work. When addressing email in outlook to an external email address, outbox shows mail being sent and sent mail registers as being sent. However no outside email address is being reached. When checking server protocol SMTP external outbound mail is showing in the queue as addresses unreachable and in some cases delayed. Have forced email to be sent by forcing connection and enumerating 100 messages. Email recipients report that reply address is shown as my local domain (not registered with earthlink) and any attempt to reply results in mail not deliverable from outside source. Help: I am looking for any assistance possible. Resources for learning about outbound mail from Exchange or specific how to's on setting up a local LAN that connects to an ISP for internal and external email. Any help would appreciated.     - netmeeting and desk top sharing have a test system(sbs2k) that run on vmware. had it running and was messing about with NAT and VPN. Has ISA wide open so that it wasn't a factor. also have a win 2k pro virtual machine running. Noticed that i couldn't use netmeeting desktop sharing (to the virtual client) when NAT was present. when NAT gone then sharing worked no problem. even tried this from outside my network which is running thru a nat enabled dlink router and still the same. Is there an issue with NAT and netmeeting? the vmware server is set up as having the usual 2 nic setup internal 192.168.7.xx external 192.168.0.xx (which is my internal home lan anyway) any ideas? I need to setup ISA and exchange and a new client for my SBS 2000 server and i do not know how. I will have a modem dial up connection. How do i stop someone from trying to dial in and access the server? I sometimes see ads displayed on my server. Also how do i setup internal mail please? I would like to send mail internally. Can someone help with easy instructions please? These things are all new to me. I also need to add a new client. How do i do this?     - even when bored one should be careful OR MAYBE, _despite_ being bored one should be careful. Work's been a bit slow this week, patching is down on the LoungeAN SO let's play around a bit. I think it was Wednesday night I installed GFI's 'Mail Security' trial, and probably Thurs morn when I asked it to scan everything, incoming, outgoing, and internal. With the default rules in place I suggest this is not a good idea. Mail Security finished scanning my slow IO (ATA33) system some time Friday. The near 1000 alert messages are OK (ctrl-a markasread) but the GB of files it quarantined stopped Exchange due to space for both the databases and the damned logfiles (another couple of GB) really cheesed me off, should it not stop before consuming everything but 233KB of HDD? Glad it wasn't my OS partition :-) HEY, now all I gotta do is logon to the server and use Outlook to OK the remaining 450 (I've already done several hundred) quarantined items BECAUSE THE USELESS PIECE OF RUBBISH (sorry, I'm upset) DOESN'T HAVE A QUARANTINE CONSOLE (that I can find) where I can 'bulk release' the items. AND it seems to have blown Exchange's 'single instance storage', my exchange DB has grown by near 100% due to this experiment.     - Remote setup - Laptop/Desktop of Windows XP Pro The boss has a laptop which was configured on the network and used at the office initially. Then he wanted to use it from home over his cable modem. A VPN connection was setup for him to use the laptop at home. Interesting (and nice) he was able to logon to the Windows XP Pro laptop at home onto the domain. Appears Windows XP cached the information and allowed the login. Cool! Once he configured his network settings to use the cable modem, he established the VPN connection to the office and everything worked as though he was onsite. Excellent! Now he says for the cost of a cheap computer he would rather setup a desktop at home. Unit was ordered and configured the same as the laptop. He takes it home and tries to login to the domain (just as he does with the laptop) and he cannot since the domain controller can't be found. Bummer! OK - Can someone explain to me why it worked (surprisingly) with the laptop and not the desktop? Is there some setting that can be configured to allow the desktop to work as the laptop does?     - SBS Server VPN speed and mapping problems. Hello, I wonder if anybody can help me please. We are setting up SBS on a server. We will want to VPN into it from a number of laptops in order to deal with exchange email, and file/print share. The server is a test one intially. It is a celeron 1700 with 128Mb and a 70 gig drive. We have managed to pinhole the server's adsl router and we can dial into the server with VPN from a remote laptop using a telephone line. Bus it is unbelievably slow, even to send a simple massage, and will not see the users shared folders etc. Q1. What things are the main governing factors surrounding the VPN speed problem we have.     - Exchange Information Store won't mount. My client has SBS2000 SP3 and receintly had a system crash due to a bad memory module. All data including the exchange server is on a separate drive from the system drive and was intact. The SBS server was re-built from scratch and everything seems to be OK, except the Exchange information store does not mount. There are no error messages other than PerfLib errors in the Event log and the services are all running. Using the Administrator console, right clicking on the mailbox store or the public folder store and choosing "Mount Store" I get the folowing error: "An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting the the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or both. ID no: c1041724 Exchange System Manager" I have tried everything without success and need some assistance. They also have been operating on a back-up SBS 2000 Exchange server in the mean time and that data needs be migrated to the main server once I can get it running.     - Upgrade from NFR to OEM SBS2K I am building a new server, and I have installed my NFR version of SBS 2000 SP1 for testing and configuration purposes. I intend to install the server and "go live" next weekend, however the SBS2K I ordered (legit) won't be in till late next week, its backordered. Can I do an inplace upgrade from my NFR version to the OEM version without violating licensing or screwing up my configurations? Xeon 2.44 Single with 1GB RAM and Adaptec Zero Raid 5 with a hot spare. BTW, I wanted to install W2003 Server, but there are too many compatability issues.     - NT 4 upgrade to SBS 2000 successful Hi, gang-- I just wanted to report on my experience upgrading an NT 4 domain controller to SBS 2000 on new hardware. It went beautifully. I spent several days rehearsing the procedure on test equipment in our office. On a Monday morning I took a spare server to the client and did a scratch install of NT 4; in 45 minutes the spare was set as a backup domain controller and I was on my way back to the office. I spent the rest of Monday working on the project. First, I mirrored the drive in the spare machine, disconnected it, and put it aside just in case. I deleted the references to the existing server, forced the BDC to become a PDC, and then upgraded it to Windows 2000. Then I connected it to the new server, ran DCPROMO on the new server, and I was almost ready to go. I found that I needed DNS on both servers (may not happen automatically). It also helps a lot if each server has the DNS of the other server as an alternate in the TCP/IP properties of the network card-- that way, the domain transfer goes smoothly. I finally decided to run DCPROMO on the spare to demote it while still connected so that the five FSMO roles got transferred automatically; in my testing, I had trouble when I simply disconnected the spare-- and I had the mirror drive on the side if I had to start over again. The final catch was that the new server was not a global catalog server; I had to tell it that it was a GC. After all that, the new server was all set for SBS 2000. The biggest disappointment was in having to use a new server name, because the existing server's name had an underscore in it. If not for that, the new server could have been dropped in almost unnoticed; instead, using a second switch, we spent all of Friday transferring one workstation at a time to the "new network." In the end we migrated about 25 workstations over 12 hours on Friday and 5 hours Saturday morning with almost no downtime to the client. (Lots of people were off that Friday, so as we worked on the workstations of the missing people, the others continued to work off the old server and an additional SQL server that remained functional throughout.)     - New VPN: DNS won't resolve I'm trying to bring up a new VPN on our SBS2K system and only have it half working. DNS won't resolve names on the remote side. I can use MSTSC to administer it if I specify the IP address manually, but cannot access the server by name. Share browsing won't work either. Remote system is SBS 2K SP1 & Win2K SP4, and is a 2 NIC system with ISA running and the WAN NIC connected to Covad ADSL with a Zyxel 643 modem/router. The client is my XP Pro SP1 computer at home hooked up to a Netgear FR114P and Verizon DSL. I set up the VPN according to 320697 (How to Turn On And Configure Inbound VPN Access In Small Business Server 2000) and also followed Q292822, and had earlier set the system up with 2 NIC's per Q306802 when we first got DSL.     - Exchange w/SBS2000 I'm attemtping to use Exchange with my 2000 Small Business Server and Server2000 and it does not look like my exchange is fully installed. I see many messages that point me to this setup /domainprep, but I think that exists on exchange 2000, not SBS 2000 disks. While trying to delete a users emails from the INBOX or DELETED ITEMS folders of Outlook 2000(SBS Server 2000 - SP3 running Exchange), the following message appears: "The item could not be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied." Given the following facts, what might be the problem? 1. I am logged onto the server and have open the users mailbox in order to deleted these emails. 2. This user is not logged on nor using outlook on any other machines. 3. These emails have been in this state for 3 weeks, so synchronization probably isn't an issue. 4. The "From" field is blank, if that matters. 5. With Preview turned on, the following message is displayed: " This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the preview pane. Open the item to read its contents." 6.     - DNS or Smart Host Just moved from dial-up ISDN to Comcast cable. . It's a 2NIC server, external NIC attached to cable modem. My external NIC settings are: IP from Comcast dhcp (dhcp enabled) ("persistent" ip is essentially static for our purposes) mask from Comcast dhcp Gateway from comcast dhcp Set DNS to internal nic 198.162.16.2 Ran ICW and tried to use DNS for outgoing, but it didn't work. Finally got Comcast's smtp.comcast.net server to work as a smart host. Should I use DNS or a smart host for outgoing? Everthing I read says use DNS, but you must have a static IP. Well, we don't exactly, but I can't see that that would make any difference in outgoing mail. But I couldn't get it to work. If I should be using DNS, any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It propagates by penetrating systems with weak passwords and dropping a copy of itself into these vulnerable systems. It affects systems running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP. Once the dropper component executes, it drops 11 files into the %Windows%\System32 directory (%Windows% refers to the Windows folder, which is typically C:\Windows or C:\WINNT). The dropper component of this malware automatically executes one of the files, IGLXTRAY.EXE, which in turn loads another file; a malicious IRC script called WSUBSYS.WAV.     - Publishing I cannot seem to publish OWA and a public web site through the SBS. I have run the ICW several times and i have followed the directions on from isaserver.org. Someone please help. Currently, i cannot even get to OWA from inside the network. Background info: My sbs machine has 2 nics one dhcp from ISP the other 192.168.225.1 Isaserver.org says to make the machine a secure nat client by simply giving the internal nic the default gateway of itself. I cannot connect to the internet when i do this. The only way to connect to the internet is to use a proxy connection with the IP addy of 192.168.225.1 or fqdn of the server itself.     - changing main NIC card in SBS2000 server Hello. My customer is running SBS2000, with all current SPs applied. Their SBS server has one onboard 10/100 NIC card. They have a dialup modem for their Internet connection. They have about 35 PCs on the network, and LAN connections to the server have been getting slower and slower as the traffic increases. We are considering adding a new gigabit network card in the SBS2000 server, and disabling the onboard NIC card. We would configure the new gigabit NIC card with the same IP info as the prior onboard NIC (192.168.16.2, etc.). QUESTION 1: Is this as simple as it sounds? Or is switching the main LAN NIC card going to introduce a bunch of problems? QUESTION 2: What would be the actual steps? I am thinking... - install the new NIC card. Assign is a temporary IP (such as 192.198.16.3). - reboot - disable the original network card. - change the IP on the new NIC card from 192.168.16.3 to 192.168.16.2 - rerun the ICW - reboot Does that sequence/plan sound okay ?
