Outlook deployment
Problem:
On a clients machine, Outlook attempts to reinstall on every reboot. If the
original client CD is inserted, then a wrong disc message appears, if I
point to the server copy, same problem. Any ideas?
The client previously had the correct version of outlook installed, but the
server was stolen, a new server acquired, and this problem has existed ever
since.
During the installation of the replacement server, outlook did not get
installed - no idea why (see below) even though I did the install. It just
seemed to skip over that step. To 'remedy' this I copied the issue CD down
to the clientapps folder, but of course I have no idea where to put the CD
key. Could this be related? How do I fix this?
FYI: SBS2K was deployed with a minor problem: the automated install claimed
that the system volume was not an NTFS volume (which it was) so after
searching the KB and trying things, I manually did a dcpromo then re-ran the
SBS setup and all appeared "OK" (obviously not). The system volume is a RAID
1 drive on SATA.

DNS lookup problem?
Hi folks,
I set up a SBS server (many years ago) and stupidly assigned the
client's website address as the domain for Active Directory (ie
instead of assigning a name such as foobar.local, I used
foobar.com.au).
The issue is that the website/mailserver is hosted offsite - when
setting the clients to refer to the SBS-DNS server on the network,
clients cannot access the 'external' website or mailserver (ie
www.foobar.com.au or mail.foobar.com.au). When setting the client to
refer to the ADSL router this problem goes away, but WinXP clients
take forever to log on.
I assume this problem can go away if I add a pointer or something to
the SBS-DNS server? Can anybody 'point' (ha!) me in the right
direction??
Cheers,
Patrick. Tag: Outlook 2003 licensing with SBS2000 Tag: 155813
changing server name
I recently got a new sbs 2003 server and XP workstations. After the I setup the server and logged in with the XP workstations I noticed that the login was very slow about 2-3 minutes to complete. I changed the name of the server and when I did that the login was almost instant. But after that I received event errors about sharepoint services.... I am guessing it was just because I change the server name. My questions is could changing the computer name really speed up the login process that much, and was just changing it by going to my computer then properties and network id the right way to change it? Because I changed it back to get the errors to go away but now the login is very slow again. Thanks for the help. Tag: Outlook 2003 licensing with SBS2000 Tag: 155808

mail delivery,same domain, 2 different sbs-locations
i have this:
mydomain.be
have to sbs-servers, located on 2 different offices
office 1 uses this mailaliasses:
- alias1@mydomain.be
- alias2@mydomain.be
office 2 uses this mailaliasses:
- alias3@mydomain.be
- alias4@mydomain.be
E-mail of both offices are stores in 2 separated mailboxes at an
external ISP, one for office1 and one for office2. Each of the
mailservers at both offices retreive their mail from their particular
mailbox.
at office 1, the LAN-domain is named: mydomain.be
at office 2, the LAN-domain is named: office2.local
At office 1, I have some problems with e-mail delivery. when an e-mail
is send to alias1, which contains also an emailaddress of office 2,
then the mailserver of office1 reply with a 'Mail not delivered' for
the mailaddress of office2, 'cause there's no local mailbox at office1
for an e-mail of office2.
I have this problem at office1 cause the domain is called mydomain.be
At office2 i do not have any problem with the same situation, cause
the domainname has another name then mydomain.be
At office1, I forced the Virtual SMTP-server now to resend
undeliverable e-mails outside. Now there isn't anymore the mailerror
(Mail undeliverable), but now at office2, they receive e-mail twice.
How can I resolve this at office1 ?
Thx a lot!

Problem deploying Outlook 2k2 from SBS2k
Lately we have been having trouble installing Outlook 2002 to new client
workstations. (And a couple where upgrading Office 97 to Office 2000
over-wrote Outlook with 2000.) It sets there for a long time claimimg to be
installing, then asks for a reboot of the workstation, and after reboot it
offers to do the same thing again. It seems there must be something wrong in
the ClientApps folder on our SBS2000 server. Is there a way to re-install it
other than re-installing SP1? I assume I can't just copy the files from the
CD to the ClientApps\Outlook2002 folder.
Now that I think about it, after a server crash last fall and re-install of
SBS, (reformat, reinstall, rebuild domain and AD, etc) I don't believe it
ever asked for the Product Key, which was different than the original
Outlook/Front Page key that came with SBS. And I don't think we have got it
to install since then, which would seem to confirm that it's not properly
installed to the ClientApps folder. But that brings back the other question,
do I have to re-install SP1 to try to straighten it out?

Trend AV and OWA?
Hello:
Maybe slightly off topic, but I searched this ng and found you all to be
really helpful.. If you know of a better place to post this, please let me
know.
With SBS 2000, fully patched, and Trend AV CMS installed we have the
following problem:
OWA is not accessable from off site on the SBS server (server01)... page not
found
The web site, hosted on server02, a NT40 system is no longer available
either. This server has been available for 5 years, through SBS 4.5 and
Trend for SBS 4.5, but now it is not. Strangly, the web browser from off
site just times out and stays on the current page, no messages or errors of
any kind.
We downloaded the CMS 2.0 for SMB from the trend web site, and of course
have no instructions or manuals, so any assistance is helpful, including
what folders to exclude from scanning in both the exchange and server
portions of the suite.
Thanks for your help.

User Profile - how to backup?

profiles from client PCs onto the server - any ideas on
how to go about this?

Exchange/VPN Connection Slow
We're running an SBS2K server. Mutiple XP Pro laptops
connect via VPN back to the server and synchronize using
Outlook without problems. The VPN connection is
established almost immediately and connection to Exchange

One machine connects through the VPN without problem.
However, it takes almost two minutes for it to connect to

another machine, the sync also happens without problem.
I have checked all the VPN settings on the client and
even created a new connectoid but haven't met with any
success. Any help would be appreciated.

4.5 -> 2003 migration problem with mailboxes
I attemted a migration on Saturday from SBS4.5 to SBS2003. The user and
group migration seemed to go ok. However, when I loaded the exchange
migration wizard I received a message similar to :
"Unable to migrate 90 of 94 mailboxes due to ambiguous ownership."
I called it quits at that points since I figured 5% success rate
probably wouldn't get me the promotion I have been looking for.
I have done some web research and it appears this has something to do
with the fact that most of my users have multiple email boxes that are
all assoicated with their NT Domain user account. I have read that if
I created a unique domain account for each mailbox I could make the
migration work. However, with the large number of mailboxes involved
that is not a very attract alternative.
Any Ideas?

folder redirected to a network share on the server. The powers that be
decided that they did not want this for all employees at this time and
therefore I disabled the policy, however, it appears that everyone's folders
are still being synchronized to the server when they log out. Am I missing
something here? Do I need to delete the policy as opposed to disabling it?
Why has the disabling of the policy not stopped the synchronization of the

Windows XP Pro, SBS 2000 and Outlook 2000....
Hello everyone:
Just wanted to know if anyone else has had problems with Windows XP Pro
workstations connecting to the SBS 2000 server (using Outlook 2000), and not
having them be able to send, or reply to their email. They can both receive
email just fine - it's replying, or creating new messages that comes back
with an error.
I temporarily have them set up using OWA. Apparently, OWA works for
them. If they were to log onto another workstation in the network (all the
other workstations are Windows 2000 Pro), their email works fine.
Any ideas as to what I would need to change on the two XP boxes, or is
there a setting I need to adjust on the SBS 2000 server? Please advise.

Off Topic: Monitoring Network Speed
Hello,
SBS2K. I know this is off topic, but I figured someone here would be able to
answer this or at least point in the right direction. I am currently running
4 10Mbps hubs on my network. I am purchasing 4 new 100Mbps, full duplexing
switches to replace them. I know theoretically how much faster this should
make the network, but I was looking to try to take some measurements so that
I can gauge the speed increase. Besides copying files and running some
operations in the database, are there any more scientific ways to measure
the difference. I appreciate it. Thanks,

Scenario: Small business with three users/workstations is presently on SBS
2000. It resides on an older server of questionable reliability.
A new server has been purchased and everything is going to be transferred to
it. When SBS is installed it detects the original server and will not join
the domain...a new domain must be created.
Question: What is the best way to bring the new server online and transfer

2 NIC setup questions regarding an external firewall router.
Hey everyone,
Perhaps I am making this harder than it should be but I have two issues that
I am not sure on how to handle 1)my ts sessions as well as using other
remote admin programs, pcanywhere, remote administrator, vnc, etc are
abruptly disconnecting all users. Connection just quits 2)how to better
manage the external firewall router internally, how to configure from an
internal workstation
Cannot determine why my connections are disconnecting. How can I configure
my external router without connecting directly to it from a laptop (I bypass
the server and switch, setting a manual ip on the laptop to 192.168.0.2)?
SBS2k current setup:
----------------------
I have an external firewall router. It connects to our ISP cable line.
ISP cable is connected to the WAN port of the router. Firewall router ip is
192.168.0.1
Server's external nic is connected to the of the LAN ports of the router.
Server external nic is 192.168.0.10
Server's internal nic,192.168.16.2, is connected to our managed Dell switch
which all pcs connect to. PCs are on 192.168.16.x subnet
A basic question:
------------------
Is there a way to configure the firewall router (192.168.0.1) from a
workstation PC (192.168.16.30)?
Or can I do the following, #3 below? This would allow me to manage the
router from any lan pc but what happens to my DMZ?
1. External firewall router connects to ISP cable on Wan port
2. Server's external Nic connected to #1 LAN (Firewall router has a
built-in switch) port on external firewall router
3. Connect the #2 LAN port of the firewall router to a port on the Dell
managed switch
4. Keep the internal NIC connected to the Dell managed switch

RAS
Group,
We assign ip addresses from a pool of addresses for our vpn clients logging
in through our vpn. I changed the ip range this morning to allow a few more
clients to connect, restarted RAS, but the new ip range didn't take effect.
Then I restarted again with the same result. I have restarted yet the third
time with the same result. Is there anything else I can do short of a
system restart to make the new ip address range take effect? Thanks.

Computer Can't log on
I have SBS2K server w/ 40 users. I have a client that has been out of town
for a week. He came back today and cannot logon. I tried logging on w/
admin id and still won't log on. When I look at network connection it shows
packets being sent but 0 recvd. Also, automatic ip address is out of the
range comming from dhcp.
Gave him one of my static ips. Now the adapter sends and rcvs packets but
can't access server resources. Moved box to computer room eliminating all
possibilities of wiring issues.
Could it be that there are no more ip's available in the range? If so, where
do I find that?

Slow Server/Network Issue
Setup:
SBS2000
ISA
Exchange
SQL
Lately it seems as if the server/network has gotten slower and slower.
After the server runs for a fews hours the RAM seems to climb up to over a
gig in use. However the server only has 512 of physical RAM. I know that
Store.exe is designed to use all and let ram go as it needed be however it
only uses around 200meg at most. I believe that the RAM issue is having a
adverse effect on network preformance. Once the ram usages gets that high I
can hardy use the server. There are long pauses between anything I do and
using it is almost impossble until a restart is made. As well as the
network seems to be effected as well. There are slight delays in accessing
drives andor mail. I am going to stay after today and hopefully pinpoint the
problem to the ram. I know with SQL I need more ram but it is not really
used at the moment except for one small database Would just adding ram do
the trick or might that just prolog the time it takes for the system to
become slow. Any ideas, nothing new has been installed or changed lately? Tag: Outlook 2003 licensing with SBS2000 Tag: 155659

Hi All:
This is Off Topic: How to find a SBS consultant in a local area, or =
recommend a resource to find one.
Lately in this Newsgroup a lot of people have been trying to set up SBS =
in business and finding themselves way in over their heads.
Its not that these business owners cannot set up SBS or learn how to do =
it, it is just a learning curve and time factor problem.=20
These business should be referred to Consultants. My point is: do these =
same business owners do their own electrical repairs, plumbing, OR =
company car repairs? (BTW, is even possible in CY 2004 to write a small =
business plan for bankers and business loans that doesn't include lots =
of thought into information technology?)
In a previous post "Jack" had so-o-o many problems that IMO he should be =
referred to a consultant. But after about 30 minutes searching google =
and yahoo I could not find a web site that provides SBS consultant =
listing by geographical area. To just tell "Jack" to go find a =
consultant is not helping him. He needed to be pointed somewhere which =
would provide him with a warm body on site to fix his many problems.
Now my question: For you SBS consultants out there, how do you advertise =
to attract new customers? How does a new business owner who wants to =
have a professional set up a SBS server find a consultant? Do you just =
thumb tack a business card on a bulletin board at CompUSA?
Is there a web site for posting your business and location?
By the way my local Telephone directory has several pages of computer =
consultants. From personal experience I know that most of them fall into =
the categories of High-End database consultants, UNIX consultants, or =
basically temp employment agencies. =20
So, is there a Chamber of Commerce site, business to business version of =
www.justtechjobs.com, www.monster.com, or whatever we can refer people =
to?
Sorry about the OT

VPN - RRAS won't set ports
I need some help quickly on this please. TIA.
I've followed the smallbizserver.net instructions to set my SBS2k up for VPN
access. I have allowed VPN connections using ISA and configured RRAS for
VPN.
In RRAS, I have right-clicked Server ports and configured WAN Miniport PPTP
for Remote Access Connections (inbound only) for 5 ports. I have configured
WAN Miniport L2TP for 0 ports. When I click apply or OK I receive the
following error message:
"Routing and Remote Access
The port information cannot be saved. Cannot complete this function.
(800703eb)"
I'm only given an Ok option. When I click this, the port information hasn't
been saved.
On RRAS server properties, the following options are selected:
General Tab: enable as router, LAN & Demand Dial, Remote Access Server
IP Tab: Enable IP Routing, Allow IP-based remote access, assign address by
DHCP
When I run ICW, I get the following error. Would this be related?
"The Internet Connection Wizard was interrupted because of an error or user
intervention. Details have been recorded in the file "icwlog.txt," which can
be found in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice\Support directory.
Would you like to cancel this action?
Click Yes to exit the wizard and restore your pre-wizard settings.
Click No to proceed with the wizard and configure any remaining components.
Click cancel to close the wizard immediately without restoring your
pre-wizard settings."
Thanks

POP3 Logging - Reg Hack
Hi
For those of us with POP3 connectors, logging can be set
to 'maximum' in the connector properties. This sets the
following keys to 5, but they can be manually adjusted up
to 7 if required (for extra extra logging!!):
HKLM\system\Currentcontrolset\services\MSExTransport\diagn

SBS 2003 "impossibly slow" problem
Trying to install SBS2K3 standard on an AMD machine with a Gigabyte Pro2
mainboard.
As soon as the Server 2003 install was complete the PC became impossibly
slow and unreactive to mouse clicks or the Start menu button although if an
application could be started, it did seem to run "reasonably OK".
But this presentation was totally unusable and the full SBS install could
not follow. A clean reinstall produced the same result.
After a long search I found a previous post suggesting that there was a
registry setting at fault.
HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop - the default entry for MenuShowDelay should be
400 (milliseconds).
A value of 0 was what was actually there....
When this was changed - followed by a log off & on -Server 2003 suddenly
started behaving normally again.
Just thought it was worth reposting this "solution" as it is so dramatic..!
