New database user
Hi,
Recently, I've added a new user to our SBS 2000 domain. Then added this user
to our database using the enterprise manager, so she can use it. When she
tries to open the database, the following error message appears: You don't
have access rights to the database. I cannot find where the problem is,
especially that I have just added another user a week earlier following same
steps.
Thanks in advance. Tag: Outlook Web Access Tag: 171196

OT: disk speed
Hi,
We are looking to add a new server to our domain. It will
primarily be used for storage. I am looking at getting a
RAID 1 controller with 2 250GB drives. What is the main
difference between SATA and SCSI drives. I know the SATA
doesn't spin as fast but is it that noticable? The cost
difference is pretty large. I can save over 1k by going
with SATA. I originally was thinking about getting a
storage server (storage server 2003 OS, can't run
applications) but down the line I may need to move
sqlServer to this new server (not a ton of people hitting
it, just ~10 developers. I know I will need to purchase a
seperage copy of sqlServer). Our SBServer is a SCSI drive
so I can't really compare anything. If the server is
primarily storage, do you think a SATA drive would be
sufficient?
(the vendors always push the higher end stuff so just
looking for an objective viewpoint)

Total rebuild of SBS2000...
I have an SBS 2000 server in bad shape. I am the 4th generation
admin on it and I really don't think my predecessors had a clue. I
have decided it's time to rebuild it. What I would like to know is
how do I preserve the user accounts, shared files, exchange
mail and most importantly the Active Directory data? I know I
can backup system state data but won't that possibly include
messed up Active Directory states/settings? I think I can just
do a backup of exchange and import it in to the new server
right? I really don't want to have to join the computers to a
new domain and migrate profiles so any help would be great.
Thanks,

adding another server. Cals question
Hi,
We are running sbs2000 and are looking to add another
server to our domain (win 2003). It will mostly be used
for storage purposes etc. We currently have 15 cals for
sbs. Is it correct that the server itself takes up one
cal, but we don't need to purchase extra cals for each
user accessing the new server. Its cals are rolled into
the sbs2000 cals. So technically if we have 14 users, 14
cals are taken up by the users and 1 cal is taken by the
new server. This means we don't have to buy any cals
associated with the win2003 server. (If we needed to buy
any cals it would be additional cals for the sbs2000
server).
Please let me know if I am wrong.

exchange backup getting very large
Hi,
We are running SBS2000 and are backing up exchange via the
NTBackup. I have noticed our backup file is getting very
large (> 2GB). We only have 13 users and looking at the

1GB Max. Why is the backup so much larger? Is there any
way you can reduce it's size?

SBS3000 upgrade stalled due to underscore in netbios domain name
It seems what should have been a straightforward upgrade from SBS2000 to
SBS2003 is now a nightmare, because of a little underscore in the domain
netbios name (VAN_INT). Microsoft allowed this in SBS2000 but is not
allowing it in SBS2003 to conform to RFC.
Apparently this is a showstopper for the upgrade and next step is to do a
fresh install of SBS2003. (which means building AD and Exchange Server again).
Does anyone know of a way to get past this (or rename the domain netbios
name in SBS 2000)?

Exchange 2000 all going to badmail...
We have a Windows 2000 Small Business Server that *was* runningInternet
Security and Acceleration Server and getting email justfine. After taking ISA
out of the picture all incoming email isgoing directly to BadMail and we
cannot figure out why.
Here's what we did:
1. We unplugged and disabled the WAN adapter. (Internet connection now
coming from Enterprise Firewall not ISA.)
2. We ran the Internet Connection Wizard and changed it from a broadband
connection to router. We were told that ISA would not be used in this
configuration and that made us very happy.
3. It then made the changes to Exchange and ISA and the connection.
4. Next I disabled Microsoft Firewall and the ISA related services.
5. We then changed all the clients on the LAN and things were good as far as
getting to the internet but nobody was getting mail.
6. We run ORF and knew it was getting to the server but Message Tracking
said it was going to BadMail.
7. At this point we did the exact same thing on the test server we have at
another location. Well almost exact. I left the services alone. Everything
worked perfectly.
8. So we enabled Microsoft Firewall and the ISA services and still no email.
9. We re-ran the Internet Connection Wizard and still nothing. Presently
that's where we are at. We have email being delivered but Message Tracking
says it's going right to BadMail.
How can we fix this or figure out what the problem is?
Thanks,

Physically moving SBS2000 to newer motherboard setup (drives and nics)
I know this may sound like a stupid question, but before
I attempted it, I thought I would find out what the
majority thought.
I'm currently running an sbs2000 machine on an old PIII
motherboard. The scsi drives it resides on are fairly
new and would not need to be replaced. What I would like
to do, is lift the drives which contain all the sbs
information and put them into a new machine (motherboard
and cpu's).
Is it possible to just take the existing hard drives and
put them in the mix on the new motherboard without losing
the already provisioned 2 nic setup? Will the drives
operate as normal on the new motherboard setup?
I'm guessing not, but this would be nice if I could just
take the drives out and install them in the new box and
have it just fire right up.
If I have left out any info, please ask away, I'd be
happy to include more information.

Norton Ghost and Exchange
Is there any preparation needed for doing an image of the SBS2K C drive with
Norton Ghost?
I am changing the size of my raid containers in the server and want to
restore the image to it when I am done.
Is it required to stop the Excange Information Store, and are there any
other services I should stop, when I make the image, or can I just make the
image?

Mcafee Enterprise users
Noticing recent issues with vscan and Onaccess scan not starting saying you
don't have rights to start services when it is the administrator logged on
and even tried administrator logon service.
Uninstall, reinstall same problem, working version not updating ran repair
and now same prob. Working with Mcafee they think it is a registry
permission error linked to some recent windows update...?
Anyone else noticing this?

cpu running flat out
I've got a SBS2000 server and the cpu is running flat out all the time. The
list of processes in task manager seems normal (system idle is running at
around 90% and nothing else is using very much) but the cpu graph is running
right along the top of the scale and the machine runs like a dog ( a very
slow one!). anyone had this before?

Spam
Our outgoing email suddely stopped a couple of days ago. After a lot of head
scratching I discovered 6000 emails in the outbound smtp queue, mostly from
someone I had never heard of. After deleating this lot it left 19 genuine
emails which have now gone out. Is exchange bright enough to spot that it
was full of spam and stopped sending?
It's SBS 2003.
Now I have to find which machine has been generating the spam. Thankfully
there are only 15 to go at!

Trouble Removing Client Computers
After disconnecting a PC from our network for rebuilding
I'm having trouble removing that PC from inside the
Administrator Console under / Small Business Server /
Shares (Local) / Computers. The computer name is listed
but when I select it, right click and select 'Remove
Client Computer' I get an error that basically says 'That
computer does not exist on the network'. How do I remove
it (the PC name) from the list? Do I have to remove it
before I actually disconnect the PC from the network?
Thanks for any help!

Problem with Backup
Hello,
SBS2K. Back when I originally set up an SBS, I wrote a script that ran the
imbedded MS backup program to back up the entire system each evening. The
script then emails me the log file so I can see how the backup went. After
working without a problem for almost 3 years, I got the following message in
the log from last night's run:
Error: You do not have permission to access portions of System
State\Registry\software.
Please see the owner or administrator to get permission.
Warning: Unable to open the file \Registry\software - skipped.
Backup completed on 2/22/2005 at 2:19 AM.
Directories: 335
Files: 2401
Skipped: 1
Bytes: 510,611,337
Time: 10 minutes and 34 seconds
Of course, the part of the message I am asking about is the first three
lines about the permission problem. I wrote the script to run under the
Administrator account. What could be the problem with this system state area
of the backup. I cant think of anything I had done in the past few days that
would effect the backup. Is there anything I can do to find out what's
wrong? I appreciate the help.
Thanks,

FYI - MUP.SYS
Howdy. This is not a question but an informative post in the hopes that it
helps someone else in the future.
My parent's computer was heavily infested with spyware including the TIBS
dialer. They had been complaining that the system had not been working well
for a while so I tried to clean it. Ended up just backing up their data and
starting over from scratch. FDISKed and Formatted with a 98 boot disk first
and then reloaded their XP Pro with NTFS file system. This is a system that
I built them with AMD Processor and Gigabyte MB. It worked great until I
took it to their house and started installing their new USB2 card and
printer. The system started hanging. Tried to reboot and it would not go
past the MUP.SYS file.
I googled this and found as many answers as people having this problem. I
did the normal troubleshooting (removing pieces a bit at a time, etc.). I
noticed that many of the fixes on google had to do with the system BIOS. I
Unplugged the computer and removed the BIOS battery for 45 seconds. Replaced
the battery. Accepted the default BIOS settings and everything is working
fine now. I don't know if this will help anyone else but just wanted to put
it out there. Thanks for your time and all of the great help that I have
received here.

MTADATA & MDBDATA
I have not been able to get approval to spend the money on the Exchange and
SQL agents for our backup software so I have been using the native backup in
SBS2003. This means that the log files are piling up in Exchange. Is there
any safe way to clean up the MTADATA & MDBDATA folders until I can get those
agents? Thanks.

2k Migration Pack Moving from Multiple SBS domains and exchange organsiations to a new 2003 AD single Exchange infrastructure
Hi can anyone tell me if the 2k Migration Pack is still available from MS
for SBS 2000
I have a consolidation operation consisting of some 7 companies to a new
organisation and a number are running SBS 2000. Shared Fax SQL ISA with a
separate DNS namespace etc..
My view was to purchase the migration pack for each affected site and the
required number or cals then perfrom the migration, and split off the
required services, adding hardware I would then look to upgrading to Windows
2003 move to a new single AD domain and maintain central and site based
services while performing hosting and routing for the old domains
Anyone know if this is an allowed upgrade path
TIA
Rgds

event ID 1002, 9004, 1005
I am having trouble getting my exchange to start up. The last thing I rember
doing prior to it not working was a windows update. These 3 errors come up
every time the server is started and no one can send or receive email. From
researching the error, I have removed and reinstalled both IIS and Exchange.
During the exchange reinstall an error came up saying to consult Q266418 at
support.microsoft.com. From this I have concluded that one of the update put
Outlook Express on my server. I cannot find a way to remove or unistall. It
does not show up under the programs add/remove from the control panel.
Here are the errors from my event log:
Metabase Update agent failed to start. Error code is 80040a01.
For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
All 3 events show this same error.
Can anyone help me resolve this? Tag: Outlook Web Access Tag: 171048
Need faster connection
Hello all and thanks for all of the good advise that has been dispensed
before. I would like some advice from some gurus that have dealt with this
more than me. I have VPN set up and can connect great but many things do not
work well more than likely due to slow upload through my ADSL connection.
What would be a good upgrade in connection to make VPN work better. The
users would like to access files on their server based folders, they time
out opening Excel docs now.
I have an SBS2003 2 nic set up with approx 30 users. I have 6 users that
are now working remotely. So what would be a good way to go? T1, ISDN,
mental telepathy? Thanks in advance.

Upgade SBS 2003 Evaluation to OEM version
Hi,
I have a server with SBS 2003 Eval on it.
I just bought a load of RAM and a extra Hard drive with a OEM license.
Can I simply run setup and upgrade it and retain all my settings.
According to MS it will work with a Retail box, but I wondered if it worked
with a OEM version.

ISA Question
A vendor wants me to add the following to our ISA to allow updates for their
particular software package. From what I can gather is that this will allow
port 80 & 443 traffic inbound to any internal computer that establishes the
connectionâ?¦. Or will this allow any port 80 443 traffic in (even if itâ??s not
requested from an internal host).
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thx.
1. Create protocol rule, http request, direction inbound and outbound,
rule applies to all IP traffic any RCP server.
2. Open an IP packet filter
name it Lacerte, action, allow direction inbound, filter type HTTP
server, port 80, remote computer any protocol TCP
3. Open a second IP packet filter
name it Lacerte 2, same as everything in #2 except filter type is HTTPS,
port 443. Tag: Outlook Web Access Tag: 171025
Event error 14120
I am getting this error multiple times but with different IP addresses.
The ISA Server services cannot create a packet filter 209.87.178.97. This
event occurs when there is a conflict between the Local Address Table (LAT)
configuration and the Windows 2000 routing table. Check the routing table and
the LAT to find the source of the conflict.
Any idea how to stop this? Tag: Outlook Web Access Tag: 171004

No OWA outside of office
Good day,
I'm trying to get OWA to work from outside the office and am unable to
do so (internally no problem.)
This is our setup:
1) Two Nics, a dynamic IP address, ISA, router
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=50
2) OWA without SSL
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=82
3) Our ISP gives us a dynamic IP so I am using a dynamic DNS service
(DynDNS.org) for IP/DNS resolution from outside the office. We have
support built in at the router for dynamic dns.
Upon entering the URL in the web browser, for example,
http://domain.dnsalias.com/exchange, I get a 'page cannot be displayed'
message in IE.
Any ideas? Thanks. Tag: Outlook Web Access Tag: 170998

VPN IP addressing
Hello
Is it possible to make sure VPN clients are given the same IP addresses each
time they connect?
VPNs are worknig fine and currently using a static pool of address instead
of DHCP, but we need to be able to keep the same user with the same IP
address for an application that needs to run. Any ideas on how to achieve
this?

Health Monitor
Got a quick question with my SBS 2000 and health monitor. All the default
monitors for 2000 server are all coming up with the red X. When I check
status inside health monitor all the ones that have the errors have a
Error Description (from WMI) Enumeration failed. Object not found. Data
Collector is misconfigured.
I have searched around and all I find is one of the network interface which
has me change some reg settings. It just started doing this about a week
ago and I usally get now around 30 emails saying critical. Do most people
use the default monitors or is it better to use ones that I have configed
myself.
Thanks

Problem accessing SQL2k server outside SBS2k network
Hope someone can help me with this.
Recently (sometime in the past 3 weeks) I have had trouble accessing a
SQL server that's held outside my network (on Fasthosts UK servers). I
keep getting a "server not found" message. I've tried with a direct
dial out to the interent and i can get access, but when i try to access
it via SBS2k server it can't find the SQL2k server.
I've opened ports TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 in ISA server but this has not
made any diffrence, (i've also stopped the ISA service on the server
and this also has not made any diffrence.)
The reson i think it is the SBS server is the fact if i connect the
machine to a phone line and dial out using the same ISP I can find and
get connected to the SQL server.
When i use the DTS package to connect to the SQL server i get the
following error:
Error Source : microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState:08001)
Error Discription : Unable to connect to source server for transfer.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not
exist or access denied.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP
Sockets]ConnectionOpen(Connect())
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks

Outlook Public folders hang
Hi all, i have an sbs2000 box and outlook on an XP client. The initial
problem was that on a specific user outlook would hang. I resolved this by
finding a bad mail and also taking outlook out of preview pane. Now i cant
expand Public folders for that user. It simply hangs and does nothing. All
other users are ok. The XP box is also a new build.
Can someone throw some light on this one please !! If the user goes to web
access it works !
Thanks in Advance
