NTBackup skipped files
After more than a year of what looked like a successful
implementation of NTBackup using custom scripts and Task
Scheduler, a routine audit showed NTBackup (SBS2000)was
skipping a lot of mundane files...like <BR>
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\dialer.exe, <BR>
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\Wordpad.exe, <BR>
C:\WINNT\system32\os2\dll\doscalls.dll <BR>
Overall the number was about 270 in \Program Files and
1750 in \System32. I can't believe all these files
are "in use", and besides, Registry settings that
(according to the KB) are supposed to govern this
behavior, didn't.<BR>

Time is off by 1 hour, SBS2000
Hello,
A question. I noticed one of my servers hour was behind one hour today.
Yesterday it was fine. I have the Windows Time service off. Is there a an
easy to way to sync up the server with a National time Server? And then have
the workstations, all XP Pro, on the network sync up the Server? Or perhaps
a better question is, why is the server off by one hour? This network has a
Novell server on it and I am wondering if the Novell server is setting the
time for the network. But the two servers have coexisted for over a year
now. The server is SP4. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dial-in tab in Active Directory users and Computers not working
Hi there,
In "Active Directory users and Computers", after
selecting any user, when I click on the "dial-up" tab I
get this message:
[Dial-in Page error]
--------------------
Could not load the Dial-in profile for this user because:
The network path was not found.
..
--------------------
After clicking OK the tab displays "Dial-in page
initialization failed". All the other tabs are fine
including the ones that don't come naturally such as
Exchange.
It used to work. Remote access actually works for users
that had dial-in enabled earlier, the issue is that I
can't grant dial-in permissions to newly created users
because the dial-in tab is broken (or can't revoke dial-
in rights from existing users).
Nothing in the event log; restarted the service;
restarted the server; tried to log in as a domain admin
user other than administrator. No change.
I also tried to disable and re-install and configure the
routing and remote access, no luck. I also tried to
install Active Directory users and Computers on an XP
workstation, then the dial-in tab is not even there.
No way to correlate the problem with an external event as
I have not used the dial-in tab for a while :-( Tag: Office for Mac licensing included with SBS? Tag: 147291
authentication being required on the LAN
I have seen a KB article on this issue before but now I cannot find it.
Situation:
Newly rebuilt SBS 2000 server running ISA and Exchange 2000.. Win2kpro
workstations. Any user except Administrator gets an authentication dialog
box when accessing either I.E on the workstation or Outlook on the
workstations. This should not be happening in the first place. But in the
second place, filling out the three line dialog box with the correct
password does not work anyway. Dialog box persists. Mapping back and forth
from server/to server no problem.
Note: the dialog box shows " Enter Network Password" and the top. Just
underneath it shows
" Firewall 192.168.16.2" This is the internal NIC address on the server. A
firewall on the LAN?
I have tried blowing away and reinstalling the user accounts. No joy. ISA is
in it's default configuration. Tried also on the ISA server/properties
adding BASIC authentication to the outgoing web requests. No joy here
either.
Should I try right click and delete the user profiles folder under
"Documents and Settings" and reinstall the user accounts to resolve this?
TIA for help.

Dec 24, 2003: Song of the Week CHRISTMAS PRESENT
If you hang around the SBS newsgroups for more than a week, you know that I
occasionally publish a "Song of the Week" parody. Well, I had some free time
last weekend, and compiled most of the "Song of the Week" postings from the
past two years into a single PDF file for your singing pleasure! (71 pages
of singing pleasures to be exact)
I've uploaded the PDF file to one of my websites. All I ask is that you
enter your name or nickname or NG handle, and where you are from, and you
will then be given a choice of viewing or downloading the PDF file.
Again, it's free. But if you don't like my parodies - don't download it! :-)

Add W2K3 to existing domain
Hello everyone, I have a few questions about licensing. Our company is on SBS 2k and we are growing fast. We need another server shortly and I would like to move to 2k3. We are using 30 CALs on our 2k domain right now and we only have 35 CALs for SBS. Do I need to buy all new CALs in order in bring in the new 2k3 DC? What happens to the CALs that are being used on the 2 other 2k servers once I install the new 2k3 DC? It is a bit confusing and I want to make sure that everything is up to spec and legal. With the new server installed, do I lose my SBS licensing? Do I have to remove my SQL, Exchange, etc?
Any information would be helpful

2nd issue of the day. NT machine and sbs2k
hi... (again)
got an NT box which isn't part of the sbs2k domain, but needs to use a share
that is part of the domain. The share in question is a snap drive..
i would like the NT machine to place files on the share with permissions set
to allow everyone full access. but it always seems to place them as read
only. Talking to users they say it has been an ongoing problem that the
shares change permissions seemingly randomly.. although this is a new
customer and i haven't built up a picture of things yet.
So the question is.. how do i force it to put files on the share so that
everyone can access them and move them between folders. there is another
issue as these files are being produced by a piece of s/ware that i'm not
aquainted with yet so it may be down to that..
any advice greatly appreciated. Tag: Office for Mac licensing included with SBS? Tag: 147232

Problems with incoming email messages
Hello there.
I am currently having a problem with mail routing. We have mail sent
to us with an old domain name that we don't use anymore called
*****.demon.co.uk. The service used to be a POP3 mailbox when we had
SBS 4.5.
The mail sent to this address is re-written to *****.ltd.uk (an SMTP
MX Record service) by demon, our ISP. This is fine but what I want to
do, and what I have done in the past, is setup a mailbox with the
*****.demon.co.uk mail going into it and another with the *****.ltd.uk
mail going into it. At the moment the email messages for the account
with the *****.demon.co.uk associated with it goes to which ever
account the *****.ltd.uk email address is assoctiated with. I just
can't understand why it won't work. I set it up on the previous
installation of SBS 2K with no problem.
Any ideas?

OWA Internal Server Error
Hello all:
Running: SBS2k, ISA (2 nics), Exchange sp3
I am experiencing an internal server error message (windows, not http 500)
when accessing OWA from the internet or LAN. I have checked the Exchange
settings, Event Logs, etc. and it seems to be an IIS problem.
http://server/public and http://server/exchange behave similarly. The side
frames load, but nothing in the middle - just 'loading'. Users are able to
create and send mail, contacts, appointments, etc. through OWA, but not view
anything posted.
According to the MSKB, I have examined the net time (set correctly and
synchronized), and the directory permissions (both file and IIS) seem ok. I
believe it is IIS because in Exchange Manager, I receive error message:
'Operation failed due to an internal server error. ID no: c1030af2;
Exchange System Manager' when attempting to expand the public folders. My
understanding is that this is a virtual connection through IIS.
Any ideas???

DNS Problems
I hope someone can help wit this. I have a client who is
running SBS2000 sp4 with 2 nic's in the server one on the
LAN and one as a gateway to a ADSL router.
I have configured the LAN NIC to use the SBS DNS server
(On 10.0.0.1) and I have configured the DNS Server to
forward requests to external DNS servers.
The problem Im having is as follows if you attempt to
resolve a url sometimes it works and sometimes it does
not.
When its working it will resolve perfectly but then it
just stops working and you get the host unknown messege
weather you do it from the server or a client. It wont
work for arround 10 mins then it starts working again for
a short while. This repeats consistantly.
Some of the things I have tried are:
Using different forwarders in DNS Server.
Assigning Multiple DNS servers to the Server NIC manually
and the clients using DHCP. Keeping the internal DNS
server 10.0.0.1 as the primary and having multiple
external DNS servers as the secondary ones.
Disabling WINS
Flushing the DNS cash using ipconfig /flushdns
The current config is all DNS requests go to the SBS DNS
Server 10.0.0.1 and it is set to forward. This includes
DNS requests for internet access and Exchange Server.
Using NSLOOKUP the correct server is responding weather it
resolves or not.
This problem is driving my client nuts and its getting
embarrasing. There are no errors occuring in the event log.
Please can any one help. Tag: Office for Mac licensing included with SBS? Tag: 147195
upgrade server

TS Licensing Help
I am a bit confused re. TS Licensing. I know I need to

Licensing on the SBS. However we have bought some XP
workstations and we have a Volume License for Win XP Pro

Terminal Services, I know I need the License Server ID (ie
SBS ID)but I also need a License code for the Terminal
Services client license pack but I thought I did not need
to buy TS CAL's for XP Pro workstations.
If I needed to use ODBC from a Win 98 machine to access an
Access database table on the Application server, would I
need a TS CAL for that 98 machine ?
Could someone please explain this TS licensing issue ?

Is there a way that we can get these files back using a cheap program

AOL and SBS2K
I have a client that has SBS2K running, however the owner refuses to go away
from his AOL account and I can't seem to get a straight answer with the AOL
"techs". One of them even suggested turn off ISA, re-running AOL, then
turning ISA back on. As of this moment, he can't use the AOL start up
screen - just the log-in screen when opening up an IE browser window.
Outside of hypnotizing him to change ISP's, can I get him to use his AOL the
way he's used to using it? Tag: Office for Mac licensing included with SBS? Tag: 147102
Can't apply SBS Sp1a
When i try in to instal SBS sp1a, it stops and tells me it needs 125mb free
space in clientapps folder to install & to free up more space before it
runs. I have gigs of free space in on the drive that contains clientapps
folder. helps Tag: Office for Mac licensing included with SBS? Tag: 147101
License upgrade from Server 2003 to SBS2K3
I currently have a customer with a 10-client license of Server 2003. What
are their options to upgrade to SBS 2003 Standard Edition with 10 licenses,
and what are their costs?
Are there any issues with upgrading in this manner? If so, can someone post
with their respective (possible) fixes?
Thanks in advance!

"Re-create" user name
Am having a software problem on one of our workstations that seems to do with her user account. The software company suggests I delete her as user and reinstall. How difficult is this? What settings will be lost? I would want to use the same login name as before, as this is her email name by default and we don't want to change that too. Running a web server
Hi
We have an SBS2000 server connected to a broadband connection. We would like
to run a low traffic (10-100 users) website in-house. Is it feasible to a)
run the website on the same server or b) have another win2k
professional/server PC in the same domain to run the site? or c) any other
preferred way to do this?
Thanks

Exchange Connector for Groupwise
NewB question:
How does one add the connector to a Win2K server. It was easy with NT and
Exchange 5.5 but this one has me confused. I have tried the installation
from the CD using the upgrade/install options but the are greyed out.

Anyone know how the SBS licensing affects Office for Mac, ie. would the SBS
CAL that normally covers the Office installations for PC clients extend to a
Mac as well?

The cal only licenses us for Outlook 2k3 not the Office suite.

Hi Erik,
SBS CAL won't cover Office installations. It will only cover the Outlook
installation.
