 - Block the downloading of certain files Where would I need to go in my SBS2K to set it so that my users are not allowed to download .exe files? I have set my Trend Office Scan for Exchange to block certain attachments, .exe's included. But I would like to block users from going to the internet and not downloading these files. Thanks!  - How to add a Domain management to a bunch of LAN-connected PCs ? It's been NT3.51-days since I was asked to bring a Domain server into an existing PC LAN, from scratch. My user has a couple dozen users and a LAN with a small-business sdsl internet connection. The company has just bought a SBS server and has asked me to do the setup. It's up as a generic SBS server right now. In my first test I was reminded that when a PC joins the domain and the user gets a domain login he gets an entire new generic desktop and credentials. All his investment in application setup and customization is gone. Is there some trick to import or retain the current setup for each user as I go around ? The users do use what ever version fo Office and Outlook that came with the PC when purchased. They do intend to move onto the exchange server shortly. I've een asked to make this a user PC lockdown site. How practical is this today ? Until now I've always worked in an engineering environemnt where the usered needed local control so I never tried it. The user machines have lots of obscure industry-specific applications installed on them, by hand. There are only a couple of dozen machines, not enough to get into cloaning but enough to make redoing by hand a pain.  - Disaster Recovery Prep... Hi, I have almost finished installing a new SBS 2000 server for my first client and so far so good. I have had a few problems along the way, which I have managed to overcome with the help of Merv and Javier. This morning I woke up thinking disaster recovery. What the hell would I do, if the RAID crashed or someone nicked the server. (Heaven forbid) Does happen though. Does anyone know of any hard and fast rules as to which files are essential in the backup routine. I'm currently backing up the entire system partition, excluding the cache, i386 folder and the Dell drivers folder. Also, any procedures for rebuilding a server from tape??? Cheers Guys...  - Why does Mapping ask for a password? Hi, one of my applications refers to F: in many places. I need to map F: to \\server\D$ which is where the application data now resides. I assume D$ is the root of D: on the server. When I attempt the map from Windows Explorer on my Win98 machines it asks for a password before allowing the map. I tried leaving it blank or putting in the one for the administrator. Neither works. Do I have to do something to each user to allow them to map to D$.  - Name resolution S.L.O.W. on TS pinging SBS2K Good afternoon NG, We have a Windows 2000 terminal server that works in conjunction with our SBS2K server as per best practice that this NG recommends. Has been working beautifully for ages then suddenly last week the users reported slowness getting into Exchange from Outlook and other such occurrences. Then an SQL application we have refused to connect. A bit of experimenting with the DSN setup for the SQL application showed that hardcoding the IP address of the SBS2K server fixed it. I thought "a-ha!" a name resolution problem. Sure enough a ping on the TS would take about 20 seconds but only if the user were logged in via remote desktop. On the console no prolem. Here is gets trickier. If the Administrator or anyone with membership of the Domain Admins group tries to resolve a name, also no problem regardless of whether they are on the console or on the remote desktop. All other workstations on the network are experiencing no problems with resolving a name This means it is all looking like a permissions problem on the TS. But I have no idea of where to look. Is it policies from the SBS2K box? File permissions on the TS? Permissions in DNS, WINS on the SBS2K box? Anybody got any clues? HELP!  - Windows 2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server Migration - Success! Hi all, after many days of research, which all turned out to be worthwhile as we encountered each and every issue, we managed to do the migration from Windows 2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server. Here is the plan we used, and all seemed to work perfectly: Step1. Prepare AD for migration 1. Run adprep on the Small Business Server 2000 dc to prep forest and domain for Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=278875 2. Change Security Policy to Enable Computer and User Accounts to be trusted for Delegation http://support.microsoft.com/?id=232070 Step2. Clean install Windows 2003 and promote Windows 2003 server to DC: 1. Install Windows 2003 server on the new server. 2. Run dcpromo. 3. Choose "Additional domain controller for an existing domain" option. 4. Enter network credentials to log on to SBS 2K server (typically administrator) 5. Domain name should match current domain name and shouldn't need to be changed 6. Directory services restore mode password is unique to each computer - you may enter any password you want here. 7. Once AD is complete, reboot new DC Step3. Make the new DC a global catalog server 1. Open AD Sites and Services 2. Expand Sites/Default First Site/Servers. 3. Select the new DC server and right click NTDS settings and select properties. 4. On the General tab put a check mark in the Global Catalog check box and then click OK. Step4. Transfer FSMO roles: 255504 Using Ntdsutil.exe to Seize or Transfer FSMO Roles to a the controller using the below procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255504 Step5. Move DNS 1. Install DNS on new dc 2. Move DNS to new server using the below procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323383&Product=winsv r2003 Step6. Shut down old SBS server and remove from AD. 1. Open AD Users and Computers 2 .Expand your domain 3. Select Domain Controllers container 4. Select the old SBS 2K server object and delete it. I also noticed that at this point it will also listed in AD Sites and Services, you might need to remove it from there too. Step7. Change IP on new DC to match old server 1.  - Isa and Cisco Hi, I have recently built an sbs2000 box and have a new cisco 837 firewall/router/adsl modem. I had a Cisco cna configure the firewall/router and install cisco client vpn s/w on a client pc. When I try to connect to the server it would appear that ISA is NATing the connection and so the ip address expected by Cisco is not correct. Is there a way to stop Isa NAT'ing the connection. 2. Does anyone know what the sure fire disaster recovery software will work with SBS 2000 that uses hardware raid 5. I have heard Veritas works sometimes or Acronis , but not sure what to buy.  - Admin login Active directory for some reason i have rebooted my server and now it will not accept my admin password for the domain. it tells me i cant use any of the other passes or user names for the domain either. did not make any changes just rebooting it. tried safe mode and recovery but will not take any pas or username, could some one help me with a way to find out the pass or a way to change it. it will not let me just log into the computer i have to log into the domain, any help is greatly apriciated Jon Tag: Notification of new patches for SBS ? After just solving an ADSL which started working without me knowing why the server has started logging the following errors in the application log, they never appears prior to the ADSL connection working.  - Dynamic DNS. Hello all, Would someone assit in a step-by-step dynamic dns configuration? I have made a valid attempt to "read" before asking; however, I am do not know what I should point to where? My setup is as follows: SBS2000, 2 Nic, Dynamic IP from ISP (ADSL), Router (NetGear FVS318), and public domain hosted at 3rd party (for ".com" business e-mail). As far as I know, dynamic DNS requires me to point my public domain to the Dynamic DNS Servers, but won't that cause trouble with my parked/hosted e-mail? TIA - Your help is greatly appreciated.  - Linksys Router Please help, I have a linksys router at home and I use my laptop to vpn back to the office running SBS2K, I did some securtiy patches and updated the firmware on the router and now the vpn does not work from my wireless connection using the router BEFSR41. my vpn works fine from my dial up but not using the router. I have a WAP11 wireless router going through the cable/dsl router.  - Print Subsystem is unavailable Hi all! Server -> SBS 2000 SP 4. Clients -> Windows 2000 Professiona On friday, the users had problems printing. They printed documents, but the documents were not printed. As I was not on the enterprise, I told a person to go to the server and to see if the printers exists. After opening the Printers folder ( on the server ), there were none printer installed. The only thing he coulded see was the "Add Printer". I told him to click on "Add Printer" to see what happens. After he clicks, there appears an error message saying: ------------------------------------------------------- Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable. ------------------------------------------------------- As everyone was very stressed to print, I told him to restart the server. I was looking on the event log, but didn't find anything on this. Maybe the Print Spooler Service has stopped and on the restart it started automatically... I would like to resolve this problem.  - Active Directory Printer I have a printer listed in Active directory which I want to install on a client workstation. From the client workstation I logon as admin and successfully install the printer by searching AD. I then logoff Admin and logon as a "domain user" account. The recently installed printer does not show in my list of printers. I checked the security settings for the printer and the group "Everyone" has print permissions for this printer.  - recovery information for SBS Hi, Is there any information about precautions to take before having to make changes to SBS components. Apart from taking a copy of the Emergency repair disk and a backup of the system state, are there any quickfire ways to make a quick copy of all the SBS system configuration and settings, so if you make configuration changes Windows 2000(on DHCP/DNS etc..) , Exchange 2000 etc... that you can go back to the settings before the configuration changes, if they don't work out.  - ISA: Major problems Oh well.. maybe VPn is the least of my worries this weekend... :-( ISA Manager is failing to start and so are a load of other things. Here are the error messages. I can't see what's broken: System Log: 7023: ISA Server Control Service terminated with the following error: %%615 7023: ISA Server Control Service terminated with the following error: 278540 7024: Firewall service terminated with the following specific error: 213004 7022: Web Proxy Service hung on starting 7022: Scheduled cache content download hung on starting 7031: Telephony service terminated unexpectedly. This has happened 1 times. No action taken 7031: SNMP service terminated unexpectedly. Application Log: ISA: 11004: ISA failed to start during initialisation because the system call RasConnectionNotification failed. Use source location 201.1534.3.0.1200.235 to report the failure FTPCtrs event 1000: Unable to collect statistics ISA server detected a change in the IP routing table. Then loads of 14044: ISA server is dropping IP packets. 14071: Firewall did not start because application filter SOCKSv4 did not start in time.  - Non-domain machines cannot access Internet I have SBS running and everything is working except those machines that are not part of the Domain cannot access the Internet. We have guests and vendors come in with their laptops and they want to connect to the Internet, but we do not want to configure these machines for the Domain.  - ADSL Problems... more info As part of trying to solve an ADSL problem in a previous post the following info may assist. As the ADSL connection will not work I also have two dial up connections configured: Connection one is for the same ISP that provides the ADSL connection I am having problems with Connection two is for a totally different ISP When I dial up using connection two I can do everything, browse, news etc etc When I dial up using connection one, I can only access the ISP's home page. I am unable to access www.google.com, www.microsoft.com etc. When I try to access www.google.com it then tries www.www.google.com then www.google.com.edu etc etc as it tries all the different domains finally it tries to access auto.search.msn.com without success.  - VPN Problems.. still! I'm really stuck here and I'd appreciate any more help that you can give. I've been able to make *some* progress but I'm still unable to VPN into the server from the outside world. I have a 2 NIC SBS2k connected to a Cisco router which connects by 128k ISDN to the outside world. My UK ISP is Demon who was turned off ICMP due to the viruses atm. I have tried so many things and I'm sure this is something really simple. However, my brain is full of troubleshooting this mess and I'm stuck as to where to go. This is where I need the guidance still :-) Internal NIC is 10.0.0.2, External is 192.168.1.2, Router (internal side) 192.168.1.1, Router (External side) A.B.C.D Here's where I am now: 1) Have configured RRAS to allow VPN as per smallbizserver.net article. 2) Can successfully establish VPN from inside the network to server. 3) Receive no response to PING nor VPN from the outside world when trying to reach A.B.C.D from remote machine 4) Have disconnected external NIC from router and connected to XP Pro laptop.  - SBS 2000 Disaster Recovery Well it finally happened. System has gone TU. This appears to be associated with Veritas BE so not sure I trust the backups. Had a couple of failed backups and then it wouldn't startup. System is twin Plll with Raid using 120Gb HD for Veritas backup. Can boot into Safe Mode and can copy whatever files I need.
