XP SP2 and LaCie Firewire Drives
Just a heads up for anyone with a LaCie external device that supports
Firewire 800.
If you're planning to install XP SP2, make sure you get and install the
11 Aug Firmware update from LaCie first, or your LaCie device will
become unusable post-SP2. Indeed, XP with SP2 will not boot properly
with such a LaCie device attached. This applies even if the connection
you're using is Firewire 400.

Song of the Week - Aug 15, 2004
Well, what a start to August ... first we survive the release of XP SP2, and
then we had to deal with Hurricane Charley. And the push is on for SMB
Nation in a month from now. Mix that in with issues with USB disk drives,
Trend, and Malware, and things have been a proverbial whirlwind around here.
Talking of rain and wind, I'm reminded of one my favorite songs, a James
Taylor's classic hit ---
Fire and Rain (aka Patches and Bugs)
Just yesterday morning they let me know you went down,
Sue Bradley, the QFE's they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to e-mail it to
I've seen patches and I've seen bugs
I've seen service packs that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I couldn't reboot again
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Bill Gates
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and the new server is not on-hand
And I won't make it any other way
I've seen patches and I've seen bugs
I've seen service packs that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not reboot again
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been searchin' my mind to an easy time, when Google was just a math term
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your satellite around
Well, there's hours of time on the newsgroup line to talk about things to
come
Sharepoint dreams and ISA machines in pieces on the ground
I've seen patches and I've seen bugs
I've seen service packs that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not reboot again
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you patches and bugs, now

Help With ISDN and ISA server
I have an SBS2000 server running ISA server, but am trying to setup a sarian
ISDN modem to use to connect directly to the bank over an ISDN line and carry
credit card transactions from the card swipes on our new EPOS system.
The modem and ISDN line have been fully tested and work fine on other
machines, but when it is connected to the server i cannot get to the
webaccess config page and if i attempt to do a credit card transaction from
one of the tills it comes back saying there is no carrier signal.
The sarian is definately installed on the server as i can see it using
hyperterminal and it is registered in the device manager so it must be ISA
server that is blocking the traffic attempting to use the ISDN connection.
Any Ideas? Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 163040
OT: Test your E-Mail AV Scanner
I've always used the EICAR test virus
(http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm) to verify the operation of
my virus scanning software, but somehow never became aware of the services
that will e-mail you a test virus for the same purpose. Although there are
several of these services, this one will send you a variety of formats (your
choice), and doesn't require any signup or verification of your e-mail
address. I've been testing ZIP file scanning, and that's one of the choices
they offer. http://www.declude.com/Articles.asp?ID=99
If you're not familiar with the EICAR test virus, check it out at the first

<< SMB Nation - THE get together for SBSers>>
My apologies for the blantent promotion ... but this is one event that I
know that if there is one training event to go to, pick this one.
[and in full disclosure, as a speaker, Harry Brelsford is covering the
hotel but I don't get any "speaker" fees and I'm taking personal
vacation days for the days I'll be in Seattle]
This conference is like my experiences with the MVP summit....more than
the other geek conferences and events, there is a level of communication
that occurs with SMBNation and MVP summits that are beyond any other.
First off, we're totally all SBSers and we don't have to explain why we
are as wacko as we are, we KNOW hands down the product works. And this
year, even more so than last years conference, man are the attendees in
for a treat. You do realize that per the schedule
http://www.smbnation.com/schedule.htm you will be face to face with SBS
dev team members/ marketing team members based in Redmond.
Just like the MVP summits I've gone to, SMBnation, you arrive, you begin
to talk SBS "geek" talk, and you don't stop talking SBS talk until the
time you leave.
Impromptu chats over dinner, "birds of a feather" type meetings,
swapping tech stories, business ideas. Those of you guys and gals that
attend your local user group meetings.... think of that and multiply
that by 10. Those of you guys and gals that only meeting up via online,
this is the opportunity to put faces with email addresses.
Again my apologies for the promotion, I hope you will indulge me in this
posting as in my personal opinion, will send you back to your businesses
more recharged and pumped up than ever before.
---------------------
P.S. I know us SBSers are cheap and in fact Anne Stanton and I are
sharing a room because.. well it's flat out more fun for girl talk and
just because. [Okay so in honesty it's because we really have fun
catching up on the girl talk... it's fun to have a fellow girl geek
around] So if anyone is on the borderline about going, consider sharing
a room. [snorers try to bunk up with snorers you know ;-)

How to troubleshoot DNS problems? Any tools to troubleshoot forwar

help with relay problems
I have searched this site and smallbizserver.net - and used a few MS KB
articles to resolve what appears to be a relay problem on my server. I
recently set up OWA using SSL. All of a sudden I'm getting 100 non
deliverable messages each day. I have followed the steps to turn off
relaying on the server and yet I can still see IPs pop up in the Current
Sessions section of the Default SMTP Virtual Server. I have turne on max
logging and I don't see anyone logging in. I can't figure out how to stop
this. I stopped the Default SMTP Virtual Server until I can figure it out -
will this prevent relaying?

\\Access path not found etc messages
Hi,
This is a weird one. I have a small network consisting
of desktop and laptop PC's attached to an SBS 2000
server. They all work fine i.e. log-on / off the
network, can access everything they need on the server
etc.
However if I sit at the server and using explorer via My
Network Places click on three of the PC's (2 x desktop
and 1 x laptop) after a few minutes of watching the 'egg
timer' I get a \\xxxxx path not found message for one
desktop and the laptop or \\xxxx cannot find server
message for the other desktop. By the way the same PC
that gives the cannot find server message also tries to
become the master browser from time to time thus logging
an error in the event log?!! I can access all other PC's
with no problem.
Sitting at each of these PC's I can ping both the local
loop back and fixed IP address with no problem using both
the IP address and DNS names. Sitting at the server and
trying to ping these three PC's using both the IP address
and DNS name all I get is timeout errors.
Does anyone have any ideas why this should be happening?
By the way all desktops / laptops are Windows XP Pro and
all machines are at the latest update levels.

Ken. Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 163002

I want to remove my peer-to-peer LAN connection and
create a new one to my server.
I cannot delete the old LAN connection. Selecting advance

Tried removing the connection via dos command with no

These all fail to install.
How do I get past this problem.

SIP VoIP Phone (Snom 200)
Hi,
I've installed a small network with a SBS 2003 Pro server
as its domain controller etc. I'm trying to use SIP as my
VoIP telephone system.
I've succesfully set up a SIP telephone connection using a
Software Telephone on one of the Window XP Pro desktops.
However I can't get a dedicated SIP telephone (A SMON 200)
to work. It gets its local IP address and gateway info etc
corectly from the SBS2003 DHCP service but then can't get
any Internet access. It can't even connect to a time
server.
How do I allow a network device like a VoIP dedicated
telephone access to the Internet through the ISA firewall
(which I assume is blocking the phones trafic)?

Disk space 'disappearing'
Hello,
The disk space on my system drive appears to be disappearing. According to
the drive properties, I have a 4,055 MB partition, of which 3,653 MB is
currently used, leaving 402MB free
If I analyise the contents of the drive, the following space is reported as
being used.
Program File 1,475 MB
WINNT 1,312 MB
[root] 257 MB
Inetpub 57 MB
Documents & settings 41 MB
Other folders (Total) 0.1 MB
TOTAL 3,142 MB
Does anyone know where the missing 511 MB is and how I can get it back?
I have checked that the above figures for the space used by the folders are
the actual disk space used (total of file sizes is 3,105 MB) and as far as I
can tell, I have included all hidden/system folders/files.
The only folder I have any doubt about, is 'System Volume Information' which
I cannot seem to access in anyway.
I am running SBS 2000 with SP4 on a Dell PowerEdge 2400 with a RAID 5 disk
array.
Thanks

Upgrade from one W2K SBS to one W2K3 Enterprise Server and one W2K3 Standard Server
As of today, my company has one server running W2K SBS.
We have bought a new server and are now going to upgrade to W2K3
Server.
I was wondering if anybody has suggestion to do the following:
* We want the new server to be the domain controller, with W2K3
Enterprise edition running on it.
* We want to install W2K3 Standard Server on the old server, and
install Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition on this one as well. This
server becomes a member of the new domain server which will be running
on the new server.
How would you guys out there approach this scenario?
Hope you can be a little detailed here, so I don't get anything wrong.

Mail not appearing in outlook inbox
I has just set up an SBS2k server with 3 clients so far (xp pro sp2)
The following is happening on all the clients....
Messaging appears to be working fine except that whenever a message arrives
for a user (be it internal or external) it doesnt appear in the user's
outlook inbox until some interaction takes place with outlook. EG a user may
have a number of messages waiting - when the user selects another outlook
folder, say calendar, all the messages immediately appear in the inbox.
Not sure if this is an outlook issue or an exchange server one. Can anyone
throw any light on this?
Thanks

Workstation Question
I have a problem with one on my workstations that I just setup. Fresh
install xp with sp1. When I install the NIC and plug in the cable it pulls
the address from DHCP. However, I cannot no matter what I do get the
computer to ping the server.
Things I have tried:
1. Reinstall nic and still pulls address but other than that nothing.
2. Install 2 totally dif nics, pulls addresses but still wont connect.
3. On every nic which I installed I also tried to just a direct internet
line which also will not work.
At first I though it was the nic but now I know it is not. The LAN is
split into my workstation through a swtich so I know the connection works.
This computer has had to internet access at all. Complete brand new
install of windows XP SP1.
Any ideas what I could try?

Logon problem
I'm having a strange problem at one site. I can add computers to the
domain during setup. But when trying to logon to the domain, the
computers first displays the greyed out logon box end then nothing but
the standard blue background.
The problem first occured when I had changed some registry values (as
described in this NG) to make XP browsing faster. I immediately
changed those settings back to their normal value. When I'd changed
those values back the computers that hadn't been started up for the
day could logon, but the ones that had been started directly in the
morning had to logon locally and access the resources on the server
from there. All this happened a few months ago, but I didn't do much
to solve the problem then. I planned to reinstall the "faulty"
computers at a convinient occassion.
But when I added two new computers the other day, I got same problem.
They are added to the domain, but can't logon to the domain. Now I
have eight computers that can't logon to the domain and four who can.
All computers running WinXP Pro SP1 with the latest patches.
Anyone having any ideas where to start looking? I've been thinking
about using packet sniffers, but I really don't know what to look for.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

SBS 2000 and adding a "Member Server"
Ok .. I've seen the notes - read the FAQ's but am really lost.. :-(
I have a single SBS 2000 server .. I need to add a Windows 2000 server to
the domain as there will be an application installed on it to do e-mail to
mobiles..
So - I need to install windows 2000 server and give it full rights to read /
write / send for each user.
I understand I can install windows 2000 server as a member server .. so I
1) Install Windows 2000 server (default options taken to install)
2) Install drivers for network card and the likes
3) Configure network card for a static IP, subnet, gateway - Pri DNS to be
the SBS server, Sec DNS to be the new 2000 server.
4) Create a user on SBS that has full admin rights.
5) Reboot the windows 2000 server - then Start - Control Panel - system -
network - join to the domain - enter new user username/ pass it joins OK -
reboot.
6) what now ???
The SBS server needs logon rights to the 2000 server ? does it create them
itself ?
I've read about having to dcpromo it .. but it fails .. (but doesn't it have
to be a member server BEFORE I dcpromo it?
In AD on the SBS I have moved the computer (the windows 2000 server) to the
Domain Controller section -
Lots of questions I know ... I just really want to get this server to be a
member server ! how's it meant to work step by step guide anywhere ? Looked
on www.sbs2000.info but nothing of use there.. Looked through the Microsoft
site and cannot find correct answers ..
Any help appreciated.. (sound like such a newbie sorry! .. give me a Cisco
router and I'd be well away!) Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 162925
User web browsing issue, W2K client
I thought I might post a solution (work around?) I found to a perlexing
issue we had with web browsing: it may be no use to anyone but would have
saved me hours!
I had a single user who could not browse the web via IE6 on a W2K client
machine (SBS "internal" web pages were correctly served). For any URL, the
ISA server returned a 403 error "The ISA server denies the specified URL
(12202)". Every other user was able to browse normally and the user with
problems could browse from all XP clients we have on site. The Firewall
client is installed and configured correctly on all machines. IE settings
were correct as per SBS defaults (i.e. pointing at the SBS2000 ISA:
http://ISASERVER:8080)
There were no differences between this user's setup and that of all other
users in terms of group memberships (local or Domain).
Looking at the various ISA logs, any connection that this user tried to make
from IE generated entries in the Firewall client log rather than the Web
Proxy log entries that other users generated. An example log with
authenticated, Rule 1 and Rule 2 fields on as well as the defaults (user
name replaced):
10.0.0.50 *** IEXPLORE.EXE:3:5.0 Y 2004-08-12 09:06:10 ISASERVER -
207.46.245.92 80 15 - 3415 80 TCP Connect 20000 BackOffice Internet Access
Protocol Rule - 21 84
This suggested that for whatever reason, IE was trying to connect via the
Firewall service and not via WebProxy. After much playing with Firewall and
IE proxy settings, the only solution I found was to clear all the local IE
cache, history etc, clear the IE proxy settings, quit IE. Then reopen and
set IE proxy setting to ISASERVER:8080, including setting the advanced proxy
address field to ISASERVER:8080 (all protocols checked). Note that I had
already tried reentering http://ISASERVER:8080 and this did not work.
Firewall client remains enabled.
Why this solved the problem I don't know (HKLU registry issue?), although
I'd appreciate any suggestions on the underlying cause.

The server seems to be performing noticably faster now
AND those PERFLIB errors that could come at any time have
stopped - Over the years I knew exactly how to bring up
Perflib hell - but no more !!!

"Cannot find server or DNS Error" - webmail
Hi All,
Has anyone run across this before ?
I have a client that has XP, ME, and 98 boxes. On ONLY the
XP boxes, they intermittantly get the above message when
use a web-based email. ( Comcast, Webmail, ...)
Any hints on where I should start looking ?

Serious SBS issues
Firstly, I know this isn't the SBS 2003 group, but I am under pressure big
time here and don't have time to use other news servers at the moment.
A customer has SBS2003 Premium. Running on a high spec IBM server.
We rebooted because of backup problems and upon logging in, and the desktop
coming up, I get the following message:
mmc.exe - Unable to locate component
(red X) This application has failed to start because MFC42u.dll was not
found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Because of this, I can't get into things like the event viewer. Other apps
seem to be OK.
Thanks in advance

Spam Relay Problem - what else can I do? Please Help.
Hi folks,
I haven't had to deal with spam relays like this before and am really
getting bombarded. Here is the scoop:
SBS 2000 w/ ISA on public IP
Server was already defined to not relay
I unticked check box so that even authenticated users can't relay
I followed MS KB article on configuring SBS for non relay, purging
queues and deleting bad mail.
I only had a few hundred emails stuck in queues, but I'm a little
upset that they even got there.
So after all of this work last night, I remote in and check the queues
and there is an smtp connector in there for the usbank scam. I
enumerated it and deleted it.
Later on this morning, there are smtp connectors for yahoo and our
local roaddunner cfl.rr.com. Is this anyway related to webmail usage?
Should I ever see any more smtp connectors than the default four that
are always there?
Does anybody know the default nature of the relay process in exchange?
If everything is configured correctly, am I going to temporarily see
a relay in the queues before it is nixed by policy?
Is it possible that a user's computer is infected and that is why we
are having this problem? All computers are running updated AV.
I also turned up the logging as defined in the KB articles and I'm
getting some events that:
EXPS is temporarily unable to provide protocol security with "matrix".
"CSessionContext::OnEXPSInNegotiate" called "HrServerNegotiateAuth"
which failed with error code 0x8007052e (
y:\transmt\src\smtpsink\exps\expslib\context.cpp@1462 ).
Thanks for any insight and help. I'm not sure where to take it from
here.

Dumb question - how long is the SBS 2003 demo?
I can't seem to find this anywhere. Not that it is a huge deal but we are
considering upgrading SBS 2000 to 2003 and I would like some time to play
with 2003 and I can't seem to find how long the demo lasts and if there are
any restrictions on functionality. MS site for ordering demo just states it
is a "limited version" of SBS.
Thanks

Problem with Admin permissions
MMC won't open - erro message says "Cannot open empty
document". No admin tools will open - "MMC cannot open the
selected file". Some software won't install - Admin
permissions required although I am logged in as Admin. My
guess is that permissions were changed and now I can't
open the users or policies to revert back to default
permissions.
Running Win2k Small Business Edition and badly stuck. Help
much appreciated. Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 162845

Automated backup to 4mm DDs Tape - NTBackup.exe
Hi,
I run a scheduled backup off the SBS to a file on disk
every evening, this seems to runs fine. However I have
never succesfully managed to get a scheduled backup to
run from the file to a tape. When the file to tape job
starts it complains about the media in the tape unit.
When using the Backup Wizard to set the job up I tell it
to overwrite the media and the name of the media but it
always complains that it is not the correct tape.
What do I need to do to get this file to tape backup to
run every morning automatically without NTBackup
complaining?

Application Log Full Message
Hi,
I keep getting the application log full message popping
up on a regular basis. It fills up with lots of
information messages, mainly POP3 information messages.
I have altered the Event log Group Policy for this log so
that it will overwrite as required and I have used the
property settings of the application log itself to filter
out information messages - all to no avail, the message
still keeps popping up saying the log is full, and it is
with POP3 information messages?
Any ideas?

SBS SP1a
I am trying to install SBS 2000 SP1a from CD. I had
previously installed the individual components (e.g. EXCH
SP3) but am trying to install SP1a from CD to get the
Outlook update.
When i run the update it returns error:
Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1 -
Error 1722 There is a problem with this Windows Installer
pckage. A program run as part of the setup did not finish
as expected. Contact your support personnel or package
vendor.
This appears both on screen and also logged in the Event
Viewer.
I have tried various fixes including KB326929 plus a
recommendation to uninstall Microsoft Office and
reinstall from the Sp1a CD. No go..
Does anyone have an idea or reason why this is happening?
It won't even let me reinstall Outlook from an original
Office 2000 CD.

Exchange Server Vs POP3
We are trying to implement a dual heading of email access
where the clients recover AND send their email using a
remote POP box. We are using .OST files rather than .PST
because we need Exchange Server to hold a mirror of their
emails. All works fine except if you email another client
of the Exchange server in which case the email is not sent
out to their POP box but retained by Exchange Server
internally. The trouble is that the client may be working
off-site and expects all their email to be in the POP box.
What settings do we need to change to force Exchange
Server to leave outbound emails alone and let them go
outside to the POP box in all cases? Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 162813
Funny exchange behavior
I had the following behavior from my sbs server
Setup
SBS 2000
ADSL fixed IP
Router Linksys BEFSR11
Symptom: very slow response from outlook when checking mails other than
plain text messages.
While checking the behavior, I noticed that I could not connect to the
internet neither from the clients nor from the server.
I decided to reset the router, and presto all the problems were gone.
Could somebody explain to me this. Maybe this is a bigger issue than
reseting the router. BTW the last time that I had to reset the router was 2
months ago. The reason was that I could not VPN to the server from my home.

Adding a second processor to Windows 2000 w/SBS2000
Does anyone have any experience with adding a second processor to a Windows
2000 server?
I'm hoping to replace a single 733Mhz processor with 2 x 933Mhz processors.
I know that I need to add multiple processor support in Device Manager but
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences? Tag: spam post deleted Tag: 162808
