Kevin's Song of the week
-------------------
IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES GETTING SHAREPOINT INSTALLED.... WELCOME TO THE
PARTY!
Well we had a fun week around here....Sharepoint the newest to the SBS
family decided that it didn't like Thanksgiving and decided to spice up
our normally extremely boring install:
http://www.sbslinks.com/Sharepoint.htm
There is an issue with Sharepoint not installing. [the SBS newbie is
trying to wear out his welcome Set the date of your system clock back
and it will install. [I will admit though that even with the date issue
it's STILL a boring install!]
Secondly if you are getting an error after clicking on "search" this is
due to the last cumulative IE fix. I personally don't notice this issue
because I rarely use search and certainly not from the server. Either
pull off that patch [go into add/remove and take off Hotfix 824145, or
live with it. A fix is being worked on.
--------------------------
So what is Sharepoint anyway?

Windows SharePoint Services helps organizations increase individual and
team productivity by enabling them to create Web sites for information
sharing and document collaboration.

I FINALLY GOT MY ACTION PACK. The front paperwork was dated 11/7/2003,
the United States Postal mark was dated 11/18/2003 from Pasadena.
Obviously it took the scenic route to get to me.

Exchange flaw could open up user accounts
Microsoft is investigating what may be a serious
flaw in Exchange Server 2003, only a month after
the software's launch as part of Office System
2003. The bug appears to affect an Exchange
component called Outlook Web Access (OWA), which
allows users to access their in-boxes and folders
via a Web browser.

Ex-MS worker jailed for black market racket
A former Microsoft worker was sent to jail for 17 months
yesterday after admitting she stole software valued at
$6 million from Microsoft's internal store. Kori Robin
Brown, 31, of Spokane in Washington, will also be subject
to a three year supervision order following her release,
under a sentence imposed yesterday by US District Judge
Marsha J. Pechman. Brown, a former administrative
assistant in Microsoft's Xbox video console and games
division, pleaded guilty to mail fraud charges in July.

Trojan poses as naked XXX pics
Windows users were warned today to be on their guard
for a new Trojan that poses as a racy attachment to
a saucy email. The Sysbug-A Trojan is disguised as
an attachment containing naked pictures of a young
couple. It's actually malicious code that, if run,
allows hackers to gain control of vulnerable computers.

Virus warning over 'Mary' porn photos email
A new Trojan is doing the rounds, using the promise
of pornographic pictures in an attempt to take over
a user's PC. Sysbug, which comes with the subject
line of 'Re[2] Mary', pretends to be a personal
email from a friend called James who has attached
photographic evidence of a recent tryst. Anyone
foolish enough to open the attachment will not find
what they are looking for, however, as it actually
contains a malicious program that will allow their
PC to be taken over.

Research firm Gartner estimates that through 2005, 90% of viruses and
cyberattacks will exploit known vulnerabilities for which a patch is
available. Governments are reacting to cyberattacks by passing
legislation to require security measures. Businesses also face revenue
loss or legal action should their operations be disrupted by an attack.
Often vulnerability advisories and patch releases are timely and well
publicized, yet flaws are exploited even after major viruses have made
them headline news. However, applying patches can be made difficult by
the number of systems under a manager's domain--for example, patching
2,000 workstations can take a long time. Patch management can help
alleviate such difficulties by applying a consistent process to acquire,
test, distribute, and install patches. The author provides several
criteria for judging the performance of patch management, including:
integration with multiple patch libraries; systems inventory and patch
auditing functions; stages for testing a patch without delaying
deployment; testing for multiple configurations; and the ability to
'roll back' a patch if problems are discovered later. Patch management
solutions should also work over multiple operating systems and devices.

Nachi worm infected Diebold ATMs
The Nachi worm compromised Windows-based automated
teller machines at two financial institutions last
August, according to ATM-maker Diebold, in the first
confirmed case of malicious code penetrating cash
machines. The machines were in an advanced line
of Diebold ATMs built atop Windows XP Embedded,
which, like most versions of Windows, was vulnerable
to the RPC DCOM security bug exploited by Nachi,
and its more famous forebear, Blaster.

with the House passing a bill Saturday that would impose
new limits on sending irritating offers on the Internet.
Final approval by lawmakers could come before Thanksgiving.
