I have a Windows 2000 Server PDC with SP2 installed. Seven
workstations running an assortment of Windows operating
systems and three JetDirect Network printing devices.

On Tuesday morning none of the workstations running 98SE,
ME, NT or the JetDirect devices were able to logon to the
domain However; the XP and 2000 Pro machines were able to
logon but not able to print. The server is able to print
to all devices. I can ping each workstation and print
server and I can VPN into the server from all
workstations. I'm not sure what has happened or how to
fix the problem.

Hi Robert,

Your server really should have SP4 installed and the ms03-039 (which needs
at least SP3). Right now you're very vunerable for Blast.

Marina,

Thank you for your help. The only reason that SP4 has not been installed to this point is that I like to read as much about the service pack as I can so that I know what to expect as far as problems and bugs with the update. Do you know if this service pack will fix any of these connectivity problems that I am having?

Connectivity problems are solvable, but you're vunerable for the Blast worm
right now! And one of the symptoms is connectivity.
Get SP4 and ms03-039 (not from the server itself) and install it. Also make
sure that all your W2K- and XP-clients have that ms03-039 installed.
How many nics in the server? Can you post the ipconfig/all please?
Do you have WINS installed? W9x, ME and NT4 still need it. Also, options 044
and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server, Scope options.

Any errors logged? What comes to mind is that the 2K and later machines got
access using cached credentials, which would not have worked with the older
OSs. I'd start by verifying all your connections, and try rebooting the 98
workstations to see if they can log in now. After logging them in again,
see if they can access network resources - shares, etc. not just printers.
Once you're convinced everyone is connecting and logging in OK, you can move
on to the printing issue, but I'd wonder if this was something transient
like a loose power connector on a hub or a LAN cable that was pulled out
temporarily.

Chances are, if the win2k server lost its network connection for any reason
(including power lost at the hub), it will have logged an event to that
effect.

I don't see how this can be software-related since it previously worked with
the same software.

on the server go to regedit and search for IsDomainMAster and set it to True
in both places. Since the issue you are having is with XP and 2000, this
is NOT a WINS issue as these OSs do NOT use WINS, but DNS.
