We are experiencing intermittent poor voice quality on VOIP phone traffic
over a 10mb link between two sites, and I'm guessing it is due to data
traffic on the same line.

There is one SBS server at one end, and there are just a couple of client
PCs at the other end (so no need for a 2nd server just yet)

Any ideas what would be a good (free/cheap) softwate package to use to try
to work out where the bottleneck is?
By the way, we have HP Switches at either end.

The managed HP switches I have used have a web interface where you can
monitor ports. If they are managed half your job is done.

My troubleshooting 101 starts with up to date AV scan, Spybot Search
and Destroy scan and cleanup, and Windows update. Usually those threee
things quiet down a network. You can look at the network status of
each remote site computer to see how packets are coming and going. If
you find a lot of traffic it suports the need for doing the 101 tasks.

I can't remember what account but I had to use my cell phone to talk
to tech support because the VOIP service was so cruddy. Now I
remember. The two remote offices had a 256k private network connection
back to the main office. When you were transferring any consistent
amounts of data across the line the voice was crud. Consistent data
was Windows Updates, AV updates or database page changes. I ended up
setting up a Terminal Server at the main office to reduce the amount
of computer network traffic.
