Hi,
Just looking a recommendation as far as a switch. Have a SBS2000
network with about 35 users and would like to add a swtich to speed up the
network a little? Any suggestions as far as model/make?

Last year, I started buying Dell Power Connect switches because I owed a
favor to a guy at Dell and he was pushing me to buy one. I have two of them
now and they're great - and very reasonably priced. I've also had good luck
with a 3com Office Connect switch I bought about 3 years ago. I like the
Dells better because the ports are on the front - I'll never buy another
networking product with ports on the back.

I would suggest looking for a switch with at least 1 Gigabit port on it and
getting a Gigabit network card for the Server.
This will help with the switch to server bottleneck that you may be getting
with so many users.
Only worth it if your users regularly move large if files to and from the
server.
Made a big difference to us here with less than 15 users.

Well right now I have 3 24 port hubs chained together. I am getting alot of
collisions and network wide slow downs at times so think a slight upgrade
might be in order... I was thinking about doing the gig net hardware as
well. Got to do some pricing and see what that would put me up too...

Thanks

Oh I had another question. Is it recommended to get a mananged switch. I
know that the price is a lot dif for the managed add on?

Eddie-

I'd recommend a 3Com Baseline 2250 48-port 10/100 with 2 Gigabit ports -
unmanaged (about $720), or if you want managed, a 3Com 4250, about $840.
Good source - provantage.com

I'd also recommend not getting anything from D-Link. I've had consistently
bad luck with their products.

Or, if even the 3com is out of range for you, but want to speed up to
switched -- checkout Dell's current offering of unmanaged switches --
less than a third the cost. I've used these in 2 install without a
hitch... Not quite the same as a 3com, but still sufficent for most
small biz.

Depends what you need to do with them.
Managed switches give you a lot more control over the ports and the function
of the switch.
But as an upgrade for slow hubs an umanaged switch would be a big leap so
I'd save you money for now.
I have some managed and some unmanaged but to be honest I rarely have to do
anything with the managed ones.
