Our Dell Power Edge 800 came with a network adapter
installed, and another by itself in a box. SBS 2003, of course.

The setup instructions tell me to use two adapters,
but the setup poster indicates that one can use
a single adapter.

We have only 5 users max, and I don't know of
any advantage to having two adapters instead
of just one.

Any input would be helpful :)

Thanks,

Louis

Hi Louis,

Number of your users is irrelevant.

Using 2 x NICs is the recommended approach for SBS as that way you place
your SBS firewall [RRAS with Standard or ISA with Premium] between your LAN
IP range and the 'outside world'. Using a single NIC means you are relying
on whatever it is that provides your Internet access [router/firewall
perhaps?]. Indeed, if you want to run ISA in SBS Premium you *need* to go
with a 2 x NIC set-up...

For the sake of the very small time to install the 2nd NIC and to rerun the
CIECW its really a no-brainer... see here for more details on an example
set-up:

http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=52

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

David

Thanks very much for your response.

I'll go with the 2-network-adapter solution,
am just reluctant to since I'm new to SBS and
of course, our new server.

Upward and forward!

Thanks,

Louis

Hi Louis,

Glad to have you 'on board' with SBS...! Sure you'll find it an enjoyable
journey.

For future reference, the SBS 2003 newsgroup is
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

www.smallbizserver.net is an absolute godsend of information, particularly
when you're 'new to things' [thanks again girls!] and you'll find the SBS
newsgroups a mine of useful information and helpful, responsive people.

If you have the time, worth playing with your new SBS box off the network
[maybe even doing 2-3 test installs] so that when you come to 'go live' its
not all entirely new to you. Kind of a self-induced comfort-factor if you
like. When setting up and using SBS, use the in-built wizards as much as
possible - not only will this simplify your workload to an enormously
satisfying [and surprising] degree but will also help to ensure that things
work the way they should do. As Susan would say, 'Use the Force!'

Cheers,

David

Thanks for pointing me to the 2003 newsgroup.

So far, I've found the newsgroup is the only
help I've got, and I really appreciate yours and
others' help :)

I'm going to check out the url you cite, as well.

Thanks again,
Louis

No problem whatsoever.

Best NG[s] I've ever found IMHO. Full of good advice and you never get the
feeling that you're asking a stupid question. We were all newbies once and
through the advice and kind folks in the community here we all end up
feeling more confident and indeed able to share whatever knowledge we've
either learned from the NG/community or solved ourselves in the hope of
passing the info on down the line.

You'll get used to the regular 'saints' as time goes on - you all know who
you are! No blushing at the back! Lifesavers - each and every one of 'em for
the likes of me who deals with SBS in-house for our company and we're also
starting to get into providing SBS services to our client base also. Would
never have been possible without these NGs and this community...

Regards [to all!]

David
